"An island born of muddy depths"

from the L.A. Times, yesterday:
THE CARIBBEAN

A mud-spewing fissure in the ocean floor has given birth to a tiny island in the Caribbean.

The island, 500 feet long but breaching the ocean's surface by only a few inches, was discovered recently about five miles northeast of Trinidad, said seismologist Roderick Stewart.

An advisory has been issued for small boats, which could lose buoyancy because of gas bubbling from the fissure or run aground in the mud.

The danger may be short-lived. Large waves are washing away the mud, and the fissure's flow may fade. Temporary island emerged in the area in 1964 and 2001.

and the online Lakeland Ledger adds:The islands are created by what scientists call "mud volcanoes," a varying mixture of water, sediment and compressed pockets of natural gas that usually emerge along fault lines. A mud volcano even erupted on land here in the late 1990s, inundating part of a village. No one was injured.

Sediment deposits from rivers in nearby South America contribute to the phenomenon.

Is it worth google-map searching for??...

Wow!!

When I read the title I thought it was somebody having a go at the UK. I remember Robert Mugabe referring to England as a muddy patch in the middle of the Irish Ocean.

Bumping this thread because of something in the L.A.Times, recently. A swarm of earthquakes, in the Reno, Nev. area...that grows in intensity. A whole lot of earthquakes...

??...is it the 'wake-up call' that a volcano is going to erupt...in the suburbs of Reno?
