This is a neat tournament. It's in a public park in the middle of a working class neighborhood in the Bronx. It's also free (except for the final day, which is I believe $10.00).

A New Yorker can just hop on the subway, walk into the park, and catch some great tennis! One of the best deals in the NYC sporting world (along with the U.S. Open qualifying tournament).

And you can see some great up and coming talent. Prior tournament winners include Daniela Hantuchova, Mardy Fish and Ivo Karlovic.

Not exactly the most luxurious accommodations for the players. But for fans it's great!

All?

I expected Gremelmayr (Ilia = :help: :o this year), Guez, Ascione, Hernych, Rosol. And thought Zib was possible, cause of Doud's most recent results.

I'm interested to see what Lipsky can do against other opponent.

BiggieMan

Pigpen Stinks

I was pretty sure Bogo won the first set, and it was a tight second. Then I had to leave. Wasn't watching any of the match, but glanced at the scoreboard occasionally. I could be way off base, and it would be far from the first time, but it wouldn't surprise me if you were fed some bad info, considering the level of professionalism from the staff at this event.

BiggieMan

Lipsky did win except it was 3-6, 7-5, 6-1
Wessels did win except it was 7-6(4),6-7(1),6-1

In which turn plays Echagaray today?

Pigpen Stinks
08-15-2007, 06:22 PM
Here's a report of what I saw yesterday.

Got there as most of the first matches were coming to an end. Saw a really long service game from Warburg against Patience with Warburg up a set and 3 all in the second. Warburg was down 0-40, and must have saved at least 7 break points in the game before holding. Pretty solid play from both players. Some freak walked up next to me and started talking about how Warburg had whipped Sampras twice in world team tennis, and continued spouting off his views on what it's like to play at the challenger level, blah blah blah. I had to walk away.

Went to one of the smaller courts that had a nice shaded area on one side. There was a women's qualie match between some Spaniard with the last name Parra-Santonja and a South African named Chanelle Scheepers. I stayed for a few games as the South African had a cute way about her. I left when she fell behind 3-0 in the third, but was pleasantly surprised when I returned to see that she was in the process of closing out 6 straight games to take the match. Don't think we'll be seeing much of either of these two on the WTA.

While I was gone I wandered over to the practice courts. Kevin Kim was warming up for his match. I think he was hitting with Cecil Mamitt. Tsonga walked right past me. I was a bit surprised to see him as he's not in the tournament, but there always seem to be a lot of Frenchies at this event, so I guess he was here to get in some practice for the Open. Kryvonos was sitting right by me and another American walked by (not sure who it was) and asked him how he did. He said that he lost but played a good match, that Fognini was just a bit better today. Seemed like a pretty nice kid.

So, I go back to the court with the shade as Karanusic and Tourte are due up next. Evidently Tourte got in as a lucky loser when Capdeville withdrew. I had seen Roko a few years ago at US Open qualies. He looked smaller to me this time - whatever. Never seen Tourte before. He looked more to me like he should be working in an art gallery or something rather than playing pro tennis, but looks can be deceiving.

This was actually a very entertaining match. Lots of variation from the baseline. Plenty of one handed slice backhands mixed in. Numerous forays into the net from both players - and two guys that could actually volley. Really no surprise from Tourte as I find most of the french guys to be pretty competent at net. Both would occasionally bring it with their forehands as well. Tourte had that Marat like thing on the two hander when he wanted a little extra, kicking the legs up and twisting.

Karanusic was clearly pissy about the situation with the linesmen and the ball kids from the get go. I remember the last time I came to this event how bad the ball kids were. I mean, beyond clueless. The chair literally had to tell them what to do after every point. Karanusic would hit a serve into the net and the ball would come dribbling back towards the T, and nobody would move. Every third point play would be delayed for a good 10-15 seconds because of the incompetency of the ball kids.

Tourte serving at 3 all, no breaks yet. He hits a heavy first serve that Karanusic rifles back, but he caught it a bit late and appears to miss wide. No call is made, and Tourte goes ballistic. He can't believe the chair won't overrule, claiming it was 6 inches out. The chair says it wasn't clear to him as it was on the far sideline. Tourte double faults the next point and goes on to get broken at love. As Tourte walks over to his chair it sounded to me as if he said "I'm sorry." to the umpire. I guess if that's what he said he was being sarcastic. He took two bottles of water out of the cooler and proceeded with all his might to smash each into the ground causing them to explode. Needless to say, he was given a code violation. Then there was the comedy routine of the ball kids trying to towel up the water from the court. One of the linesmen had to come help.

Karanusic went on to win with a single break in each set. On match point Tourte had Roko scrambling and completely out of court, and then missed a floater up at the net that all he had to do was just feather into the open court. Instead it went off his frame and fluttered wide. Fitting end to a frustrating day for Tourte.

Didn't see too much else. Saw two players practicing and asked the coach who his player was. "Greg Ork", he answers. Hmmmm, I'm thinking Greg Ork, never heard of him, where's he from Australia? The coach repeats slowly "Greg Ork......Luka Gregorc." Ahhhhhh, I get it. Looked like he had some nice action on the forehand side, hard to tell much else. I had also seen Qureshi and Bopanna doing some doubles drills warming up for their match.

Watched the early going of the Bopanna/Quereshi vs Gremelmayr/Rosol match. Two guys playing doubles against two guys playing singles on the doubles court. Well, these days sometimes the guys playing singles can win, but I think usually the guys with the better doubles skills will come out on top. Grem stayed back on serve and Rosol didn't have any good movement or instinct while playing the net. I had to split after Bopanna/Quereshi went up a break in the first. Saw they went on to win in a super tiebreak. Oh, one final note. The guy calling the service line in this match got so flustered. Second game of the match, he calls a serve that was at least two feet deep good. Umpire overrules. Next point, calls a ball 6 inches inside the line out. Umpire overrules. Next point, calls a balls 6 inches deep good. Umpire overrules. At that point the players were just laughing and shaking their heads.

Congrats to Sam!!

He proved to USTA that he deserves US Open MD wildcard...maybe more than Sweeting or Levine :p

IMO qualies will be a walk in the park for him :)

Walk in the park  I wouldn't put it like that. He'll have a good shot, but it's tough.

All right all right...walk on the COURT then, Martijn! ;) ;) ;)

No, seriously, if he keeps playing this way, I think he won't need to bother about the MD spot. I wish him good luck.

But hey, who gets the wooden spoon award :D
