Alun Jones Cheering Thread

Alun Jones is playing some of the best tennis of his life this past month. Barely ranked inside the top 200 a few weeks ago, Jones is now poised to crack the top 150 for the first time. A fortnight ago, as the top seed, Jones convincingly won a Futures tournament in Frinton. Last week, again as the top seed, he reached the quarter finals of a Challenger tournament in the UK, and this week, Alun upset the top seed en route to capturing the Nottingham ATP Challenger tournament, in arguably the biggest success of his career to date. This means Jones has now won 12 of his last 13 matches!

With a record like this, Alun must be brimming with confidence. It will be very interesting to see how he goes in the next few weeks in the lead up to the US Open qualifiyng event. Hopefully he can continue to improve his ranking before embarking on the Aussie Pro Circuit...good luck for the future  :yeah:

It's been a real good few weeks from him. I think he will jump Nathan Healey in the rankings after this result. He's playing a $125K event in Spain next week, hope he does well.

Alun Jones continued his good form into Spain and won his first round over Dustov 6-3 6-4, if he wins one more match he will defend his points and move more up the rankings. He will play Rosol who just beat the number 2 seed Olivier Rochus.

Jones is in the final against Verdasco (41) Great effort so far, Good Luck. Getting close to direct for US. That will give us 4 plus a wildcard. Best for a while!:worship: :worship:

It's becoming an unbelievable form streak, I think some of the draws have been kind to him but amazing that his fitness has held up despite having virtually no rest for a month.

Alun's been given a wildcard into the US Open thanks to the Aussie federation's agreement with the US. He's going to play qualies at New Haven the week before. Good luck to him...a couple of good wins could get him into the top 100.

The women's wildcard has gone to Jessica Moore...at around 630 in the world, she hardly likely to make an impact. She's only the 29th ranked junior in the world!

I'm not knocking her, just saying it's a bit sad that our next best prospect outside the top 4 women appears to be a girl ranked in the 600s. Effing Damir Dokic

Does anyone know where Alun will be playing in the coming weeks, I saw him on the list for China Open but he didn't make the cut and he is going to be with the Davis Cup team the week after. Where will he be in the weeks after that? Will he go back and play challengers?

Not really sure, but looking at his schedule up to this point I'd say he'll go back to challengers and try to improve his ranking to around 100 in time for the Aussie Open which would guarantee him direct entry :bounce:

Good luck in your upcoming tournaments Alun

Alun just beat Junaid 6-0 6-1 to capture Burnie Challenger. A convincing win which should see him go to approx 130 in the rankings. I think he is pretty much guranteed a wildcard for the Oz open on the back of this win, nathen healeys dreadful form and luczak and the gooch getting direct entries.

Alun Jones will not play Delray Beach because he is playing in China this week and after that tournament he will go to Chinese Taipei with the Australian team and try to get a singles spot in the team. after the sunday in Chinese Taipei he'll fly to europe and play a high points challenger in Serbia then probably in France the week after. If Alun is able to win the challenger in China and make semis in Serbia or the equivilent amount of points in Serbia and France he will break into the top 100, just around the right time to make the cut for lead up ATP'S to Roland Garros and then hopefully he'll make main draw RG. I think he'll do it, Alun is the type of player that when he gets on roll he's very hard to beat. He's very much a confidence player and we saw that against Nadal in the US Open last year.

I went along to watch the qualies at Roehampton yesterday but this match was over by the time I got there...just before midday! Don't know what happened, but did see Jones moping around and having what looked like serious conversations with people. Well here is some very sad news regarding Alun...

Jones quietly calls it quits

For a tennis journeyman who flew economy all the way and who could never quite crack the big time, Canberra's Alun Jones has some pretty fine memories to enjoy in retirement.
Jones, 28, announced the end of his eight-year professional career last night after bowing out of the first round of Wimbledon qualifying ranked 145 in the world.

Inhibited from serving properly because of a sore shoulder and admittedly physically unprepared for the event, Jones went down with little fuss 6-0, 6-0 against Frenchman Thomas Oger.

At least he could laugh at the inglorious end. ''It was ugly, it was embarrassing,'' he said.

While Jones achieved little in the way of lasting tennis fame outside Canberra, he had a better than fair share of cameos in the spotlight.

Most notably he bravely took a set off world No2 Rafael Nadal as a wildcard in last year's US Open, he won a first-round match at this year's Australian Open and made the Australian Davis Cup squad in March, his career high.

Jones said while his enjoyment for playing had waned in recent months and he never reached his goal of a top-100 ranking, he was proud of what he achieved.

''Through juniors I wasn't that good a player. I came through the Canberra system and I was never really that good within Australia.

''So from where I came from I'm pretty happy with what I achieved in the end.''

Given the meagre prizemoney found on the Challenger circuits where Jones has spent most of his career, he said he could take satisfaction just from having stayed professional for almost a decade.

A late bloomer, he benefited from extra coaching last year which saw his ranking surge from the high 200s midway through 2006 to a career-high of 123 last August.

''It's not an easy life. At the top level they're staying in good hotels and flying first class, but at my level you play small cities and you're flying economy class all the way.

''But I've had a great time out there. I've been out there for eight or 10 years and really enjoyed it.''

While he admitted he was never a chance of making it through Wimbledon qualifying, if he had it would certainly have made for a fitting end.

In 2004 he won a small role as a tennis player in the film Wimbledon, ensuring that at press conferences, such as after his Nadal match, his role as Tom Cavendish was of as much intrigue to world media as his performances on court.

While he'd also had to endure his friends bringing up Cavendish for years, Jones said he'd enjoyed his six days' work on set and his fleeting moments on screen.

''It was good fun, I'm glad I did it and it's something I'll always have being a movie star,'' he said.

Jones will travel from the UK to Belgium to marry his Belgian-born fiance{aac}e Jill in two weeks.

After a honeymoon the couple will return to Canberra, where Jones plans to start a tennis coaching business with friend and former player Damien Ward.

That explains his mood when I was there on Monday...turns out I saw his last ever match - the doubles qualie that he lost and looked so uninspired by. Goes to show how tough it is to make a living in the game. He got close to the top 100 and played majors but has probably retired without much in the bank.

As for other retirements, I can't see Luczak giving up just yet but Sirianni could well call it quits depending on where his ranking is come January. He might have a crack at one more Aussie Open if he can.

I believe he'll be happy. As far as I got to know him through that week here, I think he has to be sure about what he does and is very careful in his decisions, so I think it didn't just come out of the blue, he had to be considering it for a time. What we, fans, never want to accept is, that sometimes they really have to leave. And I think he's chosen the right time, when he felt he's not enjoying the game anymore and he wants to have his own life off the tennis court. I'll also miss him very much on the tour, he is definitely one of the players who can make you smile.

The whole thing is so depressing. That Craig Tilley needs to go and TA needs a bomb up its arse. Good luck Alun. You will be really missed!

Why does Craig Tiley need to go just because Alun retired?

Just to clear something up, Craig Tiley was the one that instigated a restructuring of player development in Australia. He was the one who made the AIS an elite squad for players on the verge of the ATP Tour and for our top juniors. Previously, the AIS had been only a squad for promising juniors. Jones would never have gotten any help from TA if this was still the case. So really, it's thanks to Craig Tiley's restructuring that he got a spot in the AIS which meant he could work alongside some of the best coaches and athletes in the country.
TA also rewarded him with wildcards for the Australian Open (2007, 2008) and the US Open (2007). If he was not part of the AIS, or showed the results that he did, there is no way that he would have been given any opportunities like these.
So really, Tiley has done a lot for Jones, but I'm not saying that he has done a wonderful job for every person that needs TA's assistance, and that he hasn't made mistakes in the past. Just that Alun is one who benefited from his reign
