Seems just a bit ridiculous.

The mayor welcomed him, huge media presence, blah, blah...

This event seems so incredibly fake to me. I have to wonder if some of those people were recruited and paid to be there (which they do all the time in LA for new shows that no one has ever heard of, I did it a few years ago when the Ellen DeGeneres sitcom was new).

I don't see why it is ridiculous that there should be a huge media presence. Beckham is an international superstar, you would expect a huge media presence.

The actual Galaxy parade itself was a load of over the top bullshit, but they are never going to sign a player of this kind of standing again, so it's unsurprising that they should try and milk it for all its worth.

Those of us who know about football though, football that actually matters, won't be paying any attention to what Beckham is doing in MLS.

Very well deserved reception for Beckham. His arrival in MLS may change the league forever...who's next is the only question I have.

Im going to his firstever MLS game on August 5 against my TFC here in Toronto.

Beckham shouldn't be playing in this mug league. He still has a lot to offer in one of Europe's top leagues.

He should have waited until he was 35/36 and then moved there.

The coverage of this gets more ridiculous, but at least BBC America's news show actually showed that most of the stadium was empty, all of the 'fans' were just in one section of seats for this 'event'. :haha:

Kudos to Beckham for knowing where the money and the attention are. His wife seems to enjoy every minute of it, and it looks like she did more posing than he did.

Agree but the greenback was simply too good to refuse

only 1 player in MLS makes over 1 million a year...Beckham, 10million, he will be targeted on the field, i would be suprised if he doesnt get hurt and misses a whole bunch of the season.

Ahhh, I think he got $250 mil for 5 seasons, that's more than 10 mil a season.....

If you think about it, it's not a bad deal for the Galaxy, he made Real Madrid 465 mil Euro in 4 years from Beckham merchandise

they said 250M to make it a big deal, 200m comes from sponoros and other stuff, MLS teams have like 12-15million/year budget.

I was able to watch a CNN program where they featured how Beckham's presence in U.S. will change the fate of football.

They were showing a photo of Beckham and asking people in the streets if who he was--most people did not know his name but others answered that he was kevin ferderline, "becker", and the husband of victoria. :D

I've been thinking about it. If Beckham knocks Hilton, Spears and Lohan out of the news, it's worth whatever he's earning.

You guys are right about the economics of the deal for Galaxy. From what I read in the papers, the team has already, or will very soon, make back its share of Beckham's cost in merch sales and licensing deals.

In spite of all the glamour, he is a good player (and certainly worth while watching even if you don't know anything about soccer )

But I agree he's still too young and too good of a player to do this stuff.

Beckhams a good player and very easy on the eyes. But I think to keep american fans interested in the game, and have it compete favorably against baseball and basketball, hes going to have to have to pull off some wicked stuff week after week. Its a lot of pressure on one man. But if other teams follow and pull in some big players from other countries, I think the game will take off.

Eric Wynalda shouldn't be allowed to watch football or talk about it. It's a shame he was not stopped from playing it years ago, but there is nothing we can do about that now. Please stop trying to talk about football, Mr. Wynalda. You are clueless beyond belief. I feel sorry for American based fans who are just being introduced to the game and have this guy as their "tutor" if you like.

He and wife Victoria will be the honored guests at a welcome bash hosted by Tom Cruise and Will Smith at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Geffen Contemporary in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Cruise is reportedly flying in from Germany, where he is shooting his newest film. Among those on the 600-person guest list are Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Jim Carrey and Steven Spielberg.

What else is new? We have shit tennis commentators, so we might as well keep the trend of having crap commentators going.
