1st wild card goes to Juho Paukku FIN, ATP ranking 709, semifinalist here in 2004. Veli Paloheimo, tournament director says: Juho is one of few finns who is trying to make tennis his profession and a wild card is helping him to achieve his goals. Another decicing factor was his previous success in Tampere adds Paloheimo, a former finnish top player (ATP 48 in 1990)

All the decent 'prospects' have main draw wild cards

There are no special players from overseas...so why not. Kiiski should match Grambow (who could already lose to Rammal). Also on the top section there are decent players like Ketola, Vilen and why not Huurinainen with monster serve (which sadly seems to be rather easy to read). It is a pity these guys are taking each other out...but one who comes out best will give Skugor a good match who will have two very easy matches.

On two bottom sections the surprise is not very likely.

I have seen him too...as well as Kiiski. Who actually lost the first set and maybe is not facing Grambow after all. Skugor was down 5-2 in the first match but then won 11 games in a row.

The Finns know how to make draws! :worship:

First L.Ketola vs Kiiski in 2005 and this year Kontinen vs Paukku.

So Bucht has knee problems again? I thought he had got the wildcard after he wasn't in the qualifying draw.
But it's even nicer that Kontinen got it. One of the two Finns I've seen live and I hope he starts playing Futures soon.

Lucky for Paukku of course. He has to defend 5 points here. When I see draws like that, it's just sad that the first round losers don't get a point anymore.

Juska is back in Tampere. I was hoping so much that Timo or Juho would get a chance to beat him. :(

I think the draw is made by english supervisor. Thank him. This is so nice gift for Finns. Juho's win would guarantee he does not need WC next month in Helsinki 15k Futures and one wild card can go to estonian Irdoja.

Bucht has likely retired from tennis. A pity.

Wasn't poor. There are players who are not seriously trying on this level, mostly players from Tampere area who came because there were available spots. Kiiski and Vilen will have a chance to qualify and hopefully they will face each other on R1.

In few years we will have Heliovaara, Kontinen, Sillanpaa and Laaksonen able to play on this level and then this tournament is locally more interesting.

There's a big storm over Finland right now, it rained heavily all night and the courts will probably be in bad shape. It's the coldest day of the summer and the forecast promises continuos rain all day. The good news is that the forecast is much better for the rest of the week. :)

It should be a very interesting 'Finnish day' on the Center Court today with Nieminen vs Burniol, Paukku vs Kontinen, Heliövaara vs Prodon and Kiiski vs Sandbichler, if they get any play today. :o

There's a big storm over Finland right now, it rained heavily all night and the courts will probably be in bad shape. It's the coldest day of the summer and the forecast promises continuos rain all day. The good news is that the forecast is much better for the rest of the week. :)

If they play, I'd be surprised if Nieminen doesn't take at least a set against Burniol. I've seen Burniol and he is really not very good :o

Darcis is nothing special, in my books. Granted, I haven't seen him play in Amersfoort MD or in Sopot, but before that, I never saw anything special of or in him. And his results before Amersfoort indicate that.

However, Burniol, in the one match that I saw of him, was very poor. Not good enough to reach Top 200.

Play on the Center Court is underway, Court 2 starts at 2 pm, Court 3 should have started at 1 pm (not sure if it did)

The weather is getting a little better now, but more rain is still expected later today.

edit: just heard it's raining again and play is suspended

Interesting to see how good the 17-year-old Kontinen really is, a win over Paukku would get him noticed in the local media for sure. He lives and trains in Czech Republic, which is rare for a Finnish junior, seems like he is determined to make a career in tennis.

Kontinen doesn't have powerful shots, but still a nice baseline game. He plays one handed backhand, but often slice and also a lot of dropshots. The serve is okay, at least he can hit some winners with it and the forehand is solid. I thought he's good enough to try Futures already. His father was with him when I saw him, so he's probably his coach.

I think Paukku hasn´t got a chance against Mischa Zverev.
I think Zverev is playing tennis in different level.
Mischa should have been in Washington and not in Tampere.
I think Mischa will win 6-3,6-3.

Huta Galung should have a blast against Nieminen.
All Finnish players should be out in Round 2.

Alyz

The problem with organisers is that there are the same amount of people whether it is 10 euros or 20 euros...IMO the weekly tickets should be a lot cheaper because then you get the heavy users in and more often.

Yeah, I think that is very expensive. It's 20€ every day of the main tourney. I think I was there last time couple of years ago and then it was 10€ per day.

I'm glad that Luczak made it through. Now I can see him tomorrow. :D I'll try to take there some pics, too. :)

I agree. It's always the same people who come really. Only Jarkko attracts a bigger audience  I'd probably be there every day if the weekly ticket was cheap enough. Now I just don't want to pay the money to go there more than once.

Have fun tomorrow Elina! :D
