I agree. In terms of sheer quality of play this hasn't exactly been outstanding. Still, some flashes of good play here and there.

Really sloppy match from JCF, couldn't get any stick on that forehand like he did this week. Oh well, his run was fun while it lasted. At least he can say he was beaten by the best.

Yes just sheer luck. I mean the Ego King's luck is never ending. Making 13 consecutive grand slam semifinal appearances. Just absurd how long this luck has lasted.

From the parts of the match I've seen, it looks like Ferrero played great and at least made it a fight. Particularly, the fourth set he had many opportunites to break back but Federer was too good. Although I can't say the same for Fed's overall performance. He looked to be very beatable out there.

Yes this is the one shot that is his lifeline on the grass when all else fails and he has also constructed some very nice points with that shot.

Pretty shit from JC. I think he played better in his first round match with Hajek. Couldn't get any returns in play, even on Federer's 2nd serve, and his forehand was back to its worst with no power or consistency.

That rain delay killed him. He was playing a lot better last night.

Ferrero had this match in the bag until the wind really kicked up at the start of the 3rd :(

As we know, it affects players more who move worse and he doesn't move well on the grass

Agree. I didn't think so before the start of the match, but the wind actually messed up Ferrero's forehand much more than Federer's. He just couldn't get it into his strike zone. And we know that from the last few years that Ferrero without his trusty forehand is a lame duck. Still a solid, solid week for him and hopefully he can avoid Fed on the hardcourts.

Tough conditions, mediocre play in general. It was good enough to win for Roger, but it'll get tougher from here on out.

Agreed. Remember the wind was a factor in Fed beating JCF but not a factor in Nadal beating Berdych as on another post. Fed, you lucky rain and wind aided tennis player. Your reign will be ended by a true Spartan.

Is the conditions going to be the same windy the next couple of days? seems to me today it's really windy, more so than previous days. Hopefully it won't be like 04 uso qf...

I think Roger will do it again this year, beating Nadal more easily than last year...

It has so much bite, it must be hell just to get it back over the net not to mention put some pace on it. I always have a hard time with those kind of shots, i can only imagine how Federer's must want to go into the net almost as bad as a ping-pong slice serve.

It will interesting to see what Gasquet can do about it, he doesn't stand a chance but if anyone can do something about it it he's a good candidate.
Especially on the backhand side which is where Fed plays most of them and Gasquet can deal with slice to his backhand.
Fed should do the down the line slice more often imo, with a little more sidespin it could be a nightmare even more so than on backhand.

The result was never in doubt but nice effort from Ferrero, he could have been crushed so much worse. Of course Federer could have raised his level if by some miracle Ferrero had become really threatening but still Ferrero confirms he's not dead yet.

Congrats to Fed. By the way, losing 1 or 2 sets is really no big deal. Come to think of it, it is when a match goes full distance that we appreciate a player's worth more. The Fed-JCF match could have gone to 5 sets and it would still be Fed winning the match. As it turned out, the match would end at 4 as JCF appeared to be losing steam by then.

Juan Carlos did not play as he did at the end of the first set after the rain delay. He came back playing passive tennis again and was really lucky to get a set off of Roger's unforced errors. It was encouraging that he was able to close out a set though, and he's one step closer to finding consistent top 10 form again. I believe in him and all signs are good for the rest of the season, if anything he was just a little psyched out by Roger, which is understandable and many players would feel the same in this situation.

This match has given me the assurance that Ferrero will be back in the top 10 in no time at all. Lets forget about the 3rd set (that was a disaster), but the rest of the match was actually quite competitive. I would have loved it if the conditions were nice and there was no wind, but Federer could adapt better on the day. I was actually expecting Ferrero to lose in straight sets, and I did a victory lap of my house when he won the 2nd set. The fact that he can pull out the goods on grass of all surfaces makes me really confident that he's going to be back at the top again. Ferrero kept trying throughout the whole match, and he was trying to attack Federer's serve and had some success with it, especially in the 2nd and 4th sets. The one thing our commentator John Newcombe said that was very nice to hear, was that out of Federer's last 32 matches, he's only lost 6 sets, and Ferrero has gotten the only set off Federer in the whole tournament. While that is an amazing achievement from Federer, it's lovely to know that Ferrero got one of those 6 sets he lost. There is no shame in losing to Federer, and considering that Ferrero's game was not made for grass, I am so optimistic. Ferrero is going to do brilliant in the US hardcourt season, and he's sent out a message to the rest of the ATP that he is a player that shouldn't be underestimated. I can honestly see him getting around a ranking of 5 in the near future. Congrats on a brilliant Wimbledon Juanqui!!!
