Frenchman fined $11,800

FRENCHMAN Julien Benneteau has been fined $11,800 after an astonishing Wimbledon blow-up after losing a first-round doubles match.

Benneteau exploded after losing a first-round doubles match with compatriot Nicolas Mahut to Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa.
Benneteau abused officials after Melo and Sa were awarded a 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 2-6 6-3 victory on a disputed ace. The enraged right-hander complained to the linesman and, failing to get a positive reaction, turned nasty.

Tournament supervisors appointed by the International Tennis Federation would not reveal what Benneteau said. However his language so upset Melo and Sa, the pair ended up pushing and shoving the Frenchman after the match.

Wimbledon's dire weather has affected the mindset of many players, including Australians Wayne Arthurs and Jordan Kerr. Arthurs was fined $590 for an audible obscenity after drawing the wrath of officials in qualifying.
Kerr received a $1770 penalty for the same offence.

Belgian Kristof Vliegen was fined a total of $9440 after being reported on two counts -- an audible obscenity and unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Of the 13 players fined in the first eight days of the championships, and during qualifying, only five are women.

Spain's Laura Pous Tio, Romania's Madalina Gojnea, Russia's Ekaterina Makarova, Czech Barbora Strycova and France's Alize Cornet all drew $590 penalties for relatively minor infringements.

Frenchman Olivier Patience and Italian Federico Luzzi were given $1180 fines for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

If being idiotic were a reason to fine someone, you'd be begging on the streets, living under a bridge.

The organising committee should be fined.

Anyone has an idea about what would happen if the players refused to pay?

And also why they believe that a retired player like Arthurs are going to pay?

The players don't pay, you :retard:, they got this amount discounted from their prize money.

Nobody's refusing to play.

This is the funniest thing I've read all day. Only 5 of the offenders were women?! Blimey.

The tournament director is the one who should be fined for bad planning. The weather forecasts of rain, rain, rain and more rain were published well in advance of the middle Sunday. Forget the fine, he's fired!

Was Alize Cornet fined for being audibly obscene too? Yum yum...

13 players isn't so much, is it? It seems average to me.
(L'Équipe wrote yesterday Benneteau got fined 5000 $ for that doubles match, but they apparently messed up the conversion, sorry...)

Alizé already was one of the few women fined at the AO. ^^

The organising committee should be fined.
Agreed.
It seems that the poorer players were the ones that were fined; the 'organising' committee fit right in.
