Your opinion on Soderling's behaviour

So much fuss, time to start a poll :D

I believe that was a perfect response to Nadal's gamesmanship, Nadal may be a great achiever, but he's not going to win the Stefan Edberg prize for fair play anytime soon.

No he's got it in the bag.

The short thing, the stare down, the fist pump at Rafa after Rafa made an error.

I think the whole thing is funny and completely entertaining.

I'm not saying it was a smart move by Soderling, but c'mon how many times is Nadal allowed to get away with taking so much time. The ATP should instruct Nadal and the umpires to pursue quicker play and if Nadal still takes too long between points he should get a warning (and penalty points thereafter, cause just giving one warning doesn't cut it).

07-03-2007, 07:34 PM
Soderling could have been more grown up about the way he handled things. If he is so mad at Rafa why not bemature and take seat with the linesman instead of that ridiculous arse tugging stunt. Even nuts lik McEnroe managed to remain adults in their burst outs.

Too bad it wasn't Dani Koellerer, there could have been some fists.

As for his behaviour, well it was more comedic than anything. It reminded me a bit of the Hewiit vs. Coria DC match for which I was there, two jerks antagonising each other. The respective fanbases trying to blame the other, but in reality it was highly entertaining and got the crowd going.

No he's got it in the bag.

Yeah right, Chokerling will do what he does best so Nadal will go through.

I still remember Madrid last year where Soderling was actually the better player against Federer but still lost cause he didn't convert his chances. And look what happened today, 2 breakpoints in the 5th which he didn't play aggressively enough and it's gonna cost him, mark my words.

I don't think its that big of a deal, Nadal did something to him first, and then Soderling pulled his pants, who cares?

That's what I was thinking. Nadal forgot to tell him new balls, the umpire had to tell Robin. He went and change rackets and Nadal did not realize he left. Nadal got annoyed, rolled his eye; went to his service routine and stop sarcastically to say new ball. Nadal was being childish and Robin was being childish for coming down to Nadal's level.

Nadal takes a little longer than most. If it's on his serve, he's entitled to take his time. On Soderling's serve, he can go as fast as lightning if he wants to.

Being in the mid twenties, Soderling has no right to control both himself and his opponent. Not even no1 Federer does that.

Soderling is a turd, but Nadal does indeed stall. And it was a little funny to hear about (I haven't watched it yet). Why no middle option, sir? It's poor sportsmanship for Soderling to do that, even if you argue that's what Nadal was practicing in the first place. Two wrongs don't make a right. They do make a funny, though :D

My opinion of Soderling being a bit of a turd preceded this event. Hence, my not having seen the situation at hand yet is entirely irrelevant. Should I find it relevant, I will click on one of the youtube links.

Your opinion that I'm a troll has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Nor is it based in reality, unless you've created a new definition for the world troll.

Now, I do not need to create a new definition to declare you a bit of a numbnut based on your response to my post. I will blow a kiss your way, though. Enjoy it

Söderling's reaction was not the most mature way to deal with the situation, but it's definitely understandable. One would have to be an iceberg not to react after the sarcastic gesture made by Nadal, considering his own history of delaying play.

And well, it was very entertaining. :D

What bullshit! At worst, most players expect to lose to him anyway so if you feel the need to retaliate to his behaviour be my guest.

men's tennis need some crap like this to increase it's appeal the mass market. the sport was at its peak of popularity when hot heads like McEnroe, Connors and Nastase were going off at each others and anyone else who irked them in any way.

Sure it's childish and not always nice to look at it but it provides a spectacle. especially in tournaments such as this were the highlights have been very limited.

A sarcastic gesture from someone obviously ticked off at his delays, even if Nadal did not find it very amusing :p. Maybe mean-spirited, but it can't have been unexpected; it's not as if he made fun of him in sheer, unprovoked spite. Quite a funny, harmless incident overall, I should imagine.

ATP should have clamped down on Nadal's delaying tactics a long time ago. And apply the same treatment across the board, irrespective of player's ranks or popularity. I do like Nadal and admire his focus and intensity, but I get annoyed waiting for him to go through his interminable serving motions (second to Sharapova).

As for the underwear adjustments, I simply feel sorry for him. He knows he's constantly being ridiculed because of that, yet he can't seem to be able to correct the habit.

To be frank, I found Soderling's antics amusing. The tension between the two players has become very tangible. Makes for an exciting end to the match - now it's difficult to predict who will emerge the victor. However, I hope they're both big enough to sort out any personal differences after this.

Dammit, he lost

But I was totally on Robin's side there.

Nadal's timewasting infuriates me more than most things in tennis

Robin is my hero for the week :worship:

Now Soderling is the new hero of MTF but the most hated player from Rafatards besides Berdych:lol:

Meh...I left this match with same opinion of Soderling that I had coming in. A good talent who can't clinch the win and someone who can be a prick. Robin had the prick rep before this match (unless you think for example his cursing at Ferrer repeatedly during a match as he has done a class move). And Nadal can irritate his opponents at times on the court but at the same time seems to be sensitive to locker room interaction. Combine the two- mix- and voila- you have what happened in the match and afterwards. Believe it or not- my opinions on players are not shaped solely by their interactions with Nadal.

Why should he be hated? It's not like he managed to beat Nadal in the end. So who cares?

Nadal is full of it. SO many players hate his stalling bullshi*t, umpires need to take charge and put a stop to it.

Robin is a prick, Nadal a nice guy as long as he is not under pression.

I see Robin is owning Rafa once again, running away with the poll :D

I would vote for Rafa, but the thread starter put "pig" in the poll. I'm not gonna call Rafa a pig:mad: , so I'm not voting:) . If all your fav players are crap, that isn't Rafa's fault.;)

Poor Robin. I bet if he had to choose between winning this poll and winning the match...oh well.

it's not forbidden, but it makes him look like idiot if he is imitating and not his own self

at least beat your oponent then

I would be wondering if the Fedtards also would liking a player who imitates Federer's asshole "allez-comeon" or his jerk fist pump as he sometimes doing it

How is Roger an "asshole" for saying "C'mon" or "Allez"? I think Roger has better gamesmanship than does Rafa. Most of the players on tour can attest to that. You don't see Roger making his opponent wait for ages in between points.

I'm kinda new to this forum so I wanna know what's with the name-calling, Rafatards and Fedtards? Roger and Rafa are both excellent players who have a lot of respect for each other, so why can't us fans do the same?

Roddick was asked if he was as bothered as Soderling was about Rafa's so-called "delaying tactics."

He was asked about the impact of Nadal's "delaying tactics" - or, if you prefer, Nadal's habit of imposing the pace he prefers on the match, regardless of who is serving (play is, theoretically, supposed to proceed at the server's pace). Did it bother Roddick, or the other players, as well? He said: "I don't know, It hasn't bothered me when I faced him. You know, don't ask me a question that you know the answer to. . . But it doesn't bother me when we play."

At least Roddick was being a man about it.

Any ATP pro should be a man and not get bothered by any "delaying tactics" or any imagined "tics" when they're on-court. Just play the game.

Soderling's clowning around cost him the match. If he had focused better instead of doing stand-up comedy, maybe he would be beating his chest in celebration instead of giving a limp handshake in the end and dodging questions at his presser.

Did not bother me.
Soderling was being Soderling and Nadal was being Nadal...thats who they are and how they behave.

I did wondered if they’ll shake hands at d end of the match.
