Does ESPN suck or what?

this is the worst coverage I've ever seen of a tournament. I've seen almost no non-American matches (I'm American btw.) I've seen little of Henin but I've seen each of the W sistas matches 3 or 4 times. Today Bagdatis beat Nalbandian, but did we see any of that? No, we got a repeat of Venus W. Soderiling took 2 sets off Nadal but they chose to show the guys in the studio talking (which was scintillating.)

Does anyone understand/know why they show Serena and Venice matches all day long? I think it's already 4th or 5th time for only one day.
Why they put so much effort on Williams and Williams only? Do politics involved?

I'm still confused by this. You would think after the fourth showing of Roddick-Verdasco that someone somewhere in ESPN management would think that showing someone else might not be a terrible idea and might even appeal to that less populous but still important group of tennis fans interested in watching other matches.

They have been consistent. Pick 3 or 4 players and pretend no one else exists.
And you get endless replays of the same matches.
If one of those players cramps, that match gets repeated a thousand times.

Well this might have something to do with the match being play on a non TV court.

espn and nbc both suck, big time. it's not a well-kept secret. their coverage sucks, and their commentators suck. it's become somewhat of a tradition.

No. Go to the Wimbledon section on here, look under TV schedule, I think it's there, the p2p site. I don't have the link right at the moment. If you have internet, you can watch, but it would probably work best if you had a high speed connection. Or you can buy the Wimbledon Live package and watch whatever they are showing there, it's not that much.

What I don't understand is why the low ratings don't chase NBC and ESPN off.
USAToday said NBC got a 1.6 for Saturday. That's for a network in every household.
Yet they still buy the rights and show a delayed tape, rerun, borefest product.
Fans would be better off if both NBC and ESPN got out of tennis and left it to TTC.

And people were bitching about TTC's coverage.

I know that's the one good thing about TTC they do show different matches, at least two quarters and two different semis. I mean they've had the Venus matches forever, yeah Venus' fight is great we all know what a great fighter she is. Nevertheless, give me a break They've only aired the Venus, Serena and Roddick matches, well they've aired some of the Federer matches but they cut them off after a set and a half, granted he was cruising in the first two and most of the Safin match.

Nonetheless, they did not show many of the exciting matches aside from the Jankovic and Safarova match. I guess the Henman was a pretty dramatic win versus Moya.

You must keep in mind that Venus and Serena are Americans, and they will pull in far more viewers than any other player on tour in America (both men and women). Not to mention, the drama in their matches today was astounding.

TTC wasn't much better - unless you had Dish or DirecTV and had the multiple court option. TTC is pathetic. Right now we're in the middle of a slam and you'd never know it by watching that channel. You'd think they could work it out with the other networks so they could at least have a highlights show on at night or show player interviews like they do during the US Open.

Maybe for the occasional tennis fan that may watch because they happened to come upon it while changing the channel. But for the true tennis fan (and I would think that would be most of their audience?) I do not agree. We do not only want to see American's, we are interested in many players, especially the seeded players in the second week of a major! Maybe they were dramatic matches, and I like the Williams sister's, but that was complete over-kill with the exclusion of all the other important and interesting matches that make up the entire tournament!!!

It looks like the opinion of the real American tennis fans are not important to ESPN and other TV stations. A lot of politics and the show on TV instead of the real sport.

Even if you think the coverage stinks, you still watch. People not familiar with tennis in America are more likely to watch if some of our players are out there playing....potentially gaining new fans. It's frustrating for us true tennis fans, but it's how they think they should grow the sport, I guess?

American media outlets are all about the dollar. If they could get better ratings (and ergo more advert dollars) by showing more than the Williams sisters, Roddick and Sharapova, they would. It's really pretty simple.

Nope, I'm not saying that I agree with their programming choices. Especially since I'd rather shove a sharp object into my temple than watch Sharapova.

African is irrelevant. ESPN has been showing the AMERICANS. Over and over I agree. I was satisfied seeing Roddick vs. Verdasco on Saturday and did not need the Sunday repeat. But I understand that ESPN has to show Andy while he is still in the game. Same for Vee and Serena.

TTC isn't so bad. I love their ATP masters coverage, they show lots of great matches. I don't have multiple court coverage, but when they show tennis, it's really pretty good. Then they get AO next year, I got Wimbledon Live this year, then for FO I watched other matches on the Internet...the changes are happening, we just need to be patient. ESPN2 and NBC are slowly disintegrating their tennis coverage, and good for them.

I'm poor too, but I can spare five dollars for TTC and 25 for Wimbledon once a year. TTC shows mostly bullshit, but when there's an ATP masters event, they show like 12-14 hours of tennis a day, and lots of other big tournaments (like WTA Tier II or I or stuff like Queen's) get their semifinals and finals show, sometimes even quarterfinals too. For that, it's worth it. I also thought their French coverage was superb, they showed the favorites but also showed other smaller matches too, and like I said, they showed free matches on Internet too.

And especially if you like Murphy Jensen go get TTC.

But yeah, ESPN2 isn't worth any tennis fan's time. Just stop watching it. My mother only likes watching Federer, Nadal, Blake, Roddick, and Baghdatis, so ESPN2 is paradise for her.

No, this is NOT beating a dead horse thread. ESPN has crossed over from showing all the Wmses & Roddick matches (& Shrieky) to showing Nothing but those matches. They Refuse to show Wimbledon at all - they're basically showing Williamsdon. I flipped on coverage ~8 times today & all times I saw Wmses ugly faces. There's NO excuse for this, esp. in age of DVD recorders. Tennis is on at least 8 hrs/day - showing 99% unwatchable garbage. I've seen parts of 2 Fed matches. That's it. Period. End of Story.

A few yrs. ago, if NBC showed a match, ESPN would come on showing other matches. So, when NBC was showing Wms2 Bitch, of course, I expected ESPN would follow w/someone interesting. Nope. Same Unwatchable shit all over again.

I've lost interest in the tournament, and in despair as about to give up watching pro. tennis again, except perhaps to keep an eye on Fed. What else can one do. Watching on computer is a joke. The resolution is ridiculous. TV is bad enough. But on computer you lose 90% of the information. Enjoyment is nil.

The same happens in the UK. They showed the Henman match whenever they could, because they knew he wouldn't win again. I wouldn't mind seeing the American players over and over again because they're actually good.

Just imagine seeing "tiger" Tim over and over again...

In a few years there may be even fewer top 30 American players to watch. These networks should slowly introduce the casual fan to international players.

I sent an email to ESPN (not that it'll make a difference) noting that they can highlight Americans all they want during rain delays just not in lieu of live tennis.

I've watched tennis here in the states for a good 10 years and I have never seen anything this bad. They played like 2-3 different matches(roddick or the williams sisters) the last week each 5-6 times a piece, and over 10-20 times if you count the little portions they show sometimes. To make matters even worse, they tease you with other matches, showing you a couple of games like Soderling versus Nadal and then its back to 16th repeat of Serena Williams.

But to their "credit" it appears that it's really an attempt to get USA interested in tennis more. A good example of things that just boggle your mind yet are in a similar vein was the last gran prix(formula one). In the USA, you could only see it on TV time delayed by several hours because they want to get more peolle in the US interested in it. The real fans get ticked off about it. SpeedTV must have got thousands of angry letters because they could have shown it live.

I don't know how can anyone be interested in seeing over and over again the same people, from dawn to dusk.
