Davydenko joins Safin in Wimbledon angst
1st July 2007, 22:43 WST

Nikolay Davydenko has joined his Russian Davis Cup team mate Marat Safin in criticising the way Wimbledon is run.

"Wimbledon is the world's most boring tournament," Davydenko told the Sovietsky Sport newspaper.

"There's hardly anything to do apart from tennis. You constantly find yourself yawning, there's no entertainment here."

The world number four has never found himself at ease on the slick grass courts at the All England Club, failing to progress beyond the second round in his five previous visits to London.

"We're staying in the city centre, so it's a bit better," said the Russian, who has made his breakthrough this year, coming from two sets down to beat Australia's Chris Guccione and reach the last 32 for the first time.

"If we rented a house near Wimbledon, it would have been a total bore. There's absolutely nothing to do besides tennis."

Former world number one Safin was also highly critical of Wimbledon, complaining about the food prices and the security before he was knocked out by defending champion Roger Federer in the third round on Friday.

Kitzi was always more affordable for me. The summer clay events are great, but as for PMK. I mean I dislike London and all and he must have wanted to lose to Guccione, so he could get out of the place, but there are worse places for boredom.

It's true, I can only go by what I learn of him on court, off court, in interviews, etc. The most he has come to saying something even slightly off colour, is that Kooyong (or was it Adelaide or Sydney) was only used by players to prepare for a better tournament. I like the PMK, but I wish he would show a little more of his edgy side.

Yes, Davydenko is the most boring player on tour because he doesn't entertain 'the kiddies' here superficially with silly antics like jumping around like a jackass or arguing with umpires over missed calls. And, most importantly, he doesn't have Juan Carlos Ferrero's movie star looks to complement his game (which is just as exciting as Ferrero's ironically).

Clearly we're qualified to make this kind of judgement about him.

How much will de Villiers fine him for this one?

I have learn to get up earlier on Sundays. I wanted to be the one to give de Villiers the first Sunday morning smooch, but you beat me to it. :sobbing:

I saw an episode of Tenis Pro that had an extended interview with Kolya. Honestly, he didn't come across as boring- more soft spoken than anything else really.

I don't know what the current criteria for "boring" is these days, but I guess that term can have different meanings, depending upon who you ask to define it. ;)

Some people like to create some controversy. Nice how Davydenko waited for the year when he finally got into the 2nd week of this tournament to make his statements, since it would have sounded pathetically irrelevant otherwise.

Kind of like it does when Safin says it, because a man like him certainly would rather have something other than tennis to do.

I'm sure he thinks of himself as one. Maybe if he was a bit more single minded on the tennis for two weeks during a Slam, he might do better here, rather than looking for other things to do on his days off in between? I'm sure Roger, Lleyton, Rafael etc. are not aimlessly wandering around Wimbledon looking for entertainment on days between matches. They'll be in the gym, training, working out strategies.

Davydenko should be a contender to win Slams though. I'm sure he thinks of himself as one.
He is the tier down from the only real contenders to win slams right now and that is Nadal and Federer. After them comes Roddick, Djokovic, Hewitt and then Davydenko is probably trailing just after that group as he lacks the mental edge.

Problem is he cannot beat Federer on fastcourts or Nadal on clay just like everyone else on tour. His only real chance would be RG if Nadal pulled oput or suffered a shock upset and Federer either got beat by someone else or Davy grew a "how to close out sets vs Federer" section in his brain.
