yay we've seen it , I don't know how he does it but I would feel pretentious wearing in on court . The suite is very nice and probably very exclusive befitting a sports royalty, I remember Lebron James had a similar white suite but he wore it only on the draft night , albeit he didn't even play a minute in the nba

My biggest issue is that it makes him seem so old.

Roger plays into what his management has him do and I believe he enjoys it, but he's just a cute, geeky guy. I'd rather see that then him transforming into an old geezer.

I do like the shirt vest combo, but I don't think he found it comfortable to play in.

I have to agree...although I not a fan, I certainly respect his genius...but I find him terribly pretentious. Not at all sincere. But I guess when you play like he does, it doesn't much matter what people think!

not all kids think that dressing like Nadal is "cool" , or so i hope. Wimbledon is a tournament full of traditions and it's good that the champ does something special for it

jmp
06-28-2007, 01:57 AM
I like it because I think he can pull it off. It is well known that he likes style and fashion. So, this look, his Wimbledon resume, and the way he wears the ensemble before each match fits him. I can't think of any other player I'd like to see walk onto the court dressed this way.

I'm interested in the extra bag players are carrying onto the court lately. I guess Roger needs his bag for his outfit. I think I've seen Serena with an extra bag as well.

gaz, you make a good point. But, I have to disagree. I believe the diversity of Nadal's dress and manor, Roger's contrasting style, and all of the other players on the circuit should attract new fans as much as the beauty of the game itself. I fell in love with the game and the way individual players interpreted it a million years ago and I wouldn't have it any other way. That's why it's hard for me to get nationalistic about tennis. Player B may be from some country I can't pronounce. But, I always root for him because I like his game or some other intangible about him.

Is Federer wearing this for every game or just the first round??

I think he should wear it for the first round and then just the finals...if he wears it every match and if he loses, how is he going to go back?? wear the suit and go back after you lose or just go back in your playing dress??? either way it will look stupid.

I know he is very confident that he will win, but still its too big a risk according to me :)

Shit, if I played the way he does, I could not keep my mouth as tame as he does. He only talks good and does good from what we see so who gives a shit if he walks on the court like that. It's not really his complete decision either--Nike wants him to do it and he likes it so whatever. Let the man do what he wants. I seriously think after a year or so I'd be talking shit and running my mouth if I was him.

Fashionwise, I'm all for some retro styling from the 30's - it would be very cool to see some sort of trousers, vests and old caps.

Well, it's not like he hasn't earned such high esteem. I mean, if people want to respect him like a man who's won this rather high esteemed tournament for 4 consecutive years, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to.

That's so rude. There are plenty of big name posters here at MTF that can't punctuate or spell for shit, and I have never seen anyone call them out on it, but here you are picking on poor Rafa fans. Maybe English isn't their first language? Maybe you're just very mean? Maybe Rafa fans are far too busy downloading *--*hOt pIx_**- to bother with punctuation or grammar?

Or maybe it's just that most people here don't speak english as their first language. I think the MTF people can write english amazingly well.

But maybe that's just me, I've never had the luxury to have english as my first language. That's why I don't give a shit about some minor grammar and spelling mistakes.

By the way, Federer's clothes look great! Very classy.

yeah it's so cool to wear pants that require you to pull at your arse between every point

tennis needs to appeal to more than little children. i disagree with that as well because there are plenty of preppy kids out there who would love the crap he's wearing. it's an association with the home of tennis that this outfit was created for. obviously if he walked on court at the Australian Open wearing that it would be stupid, but here it is entirely appropriate. have you even paid any attention to what all the umpires and linespeople are wearing?

it may be a revelation to you but not everyone in the world has the same tastes and there's plenty of room to cater to everyone in the game.

To tell you the truth i really dislike it. They look as if they're trying extremely hard to push his image up or something. I know he's the best player but they're fully fken over doing it, it's revolting. Last year the jacket... ok i can take that since it's just a jacket that resembles how many wimbledons you've won but this year instead of stitching another extra racquet onto the friggin jacket they made him looking like one of those players from the past, wearing a vest, long pants and shit. That's way over doing it. What's worst? It's the gold. Unless you're a black man, gold in general looks extremely lame on a person unless on special occasion but certainly not tennis even on the voguey federer. Seriously looks ridiculous. I wonder what happens when Federer loses, he's just going to take all that off next year or some shit? And what happens if he wins this year again? what is he going to wear next year? Please just go back to normal Roger... but i guess you're not the one to decide.

In order to get more of the general public interested, stuff like this has to be done. I hope both Fed and Rafa stay this unique.

then create this costume for all players, not just Federer. They make him look so much like a try hard robot whose trying to stand out. Fully over-promoting him. I know he deserves alot over the recent years of successful tennis and i really like him too. But this is going out of hand. Yous kno about the Time most influencial 100 people right? This Korean guy named Bi Rain, a singer who can't sing for shit and is ugly as was top of the list. Why? Because he was fully over promoted and it's disgusting!!! Korea even printed Rain's body figure onto the friggin korean airlines lol. I kno this ain't really related but Federer in this wimbledon is giving this type of feeling - OVER-PROMOTED. it really gives me goosebumps.

I agree - the jacket goes better with trousers than shorts and the overall retro look is in keeping with Wimbledon's traditional persona. Federer has both the style and stature to pull off the outfit - this is not Bethanie Mattek we're talking about here

I agree that it's pretentious, snobby, and just kind of ridiculous. Why would anyone want to dress like that while entering a tennis court? I thought he went far enough with the blazer last year, but this is unprecedented. What will they have for him next year - ride a white horse onto Centre Court with white roses in his hair? While I do believe Fed is a humble and gracious champion, he has these moments of being totally over the top.

P.S. Star Wars rules. You can never make fun of someone for quoting Star Wars, so don't even try it.

Q. A lot of players seem to be doing more modeling, the men taking more fashion, pride in their fashion. Have you noticed that? Obviously with your white outfit, what is your take on all of that?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, well, I think it's important to look good on the court. I think we could have better outfits on tour in general. I had the idea last year of the jacket. Of course, this year we followed it up with an entire outfit because the idea came kind of short before Wimbledon so I didn't have much time to create something. But the jacket still created kind of a nice buzz. This year I enjoy wearing the entire outfit again. Yeah, I see that players are more aware now of the details, that the headband matches with the shorts, so forth. I always thought that was important, you know, that the whole entire outfit matches together. Yeah, many companies had that problem before, you know, because sometimes shorts are being done somewhere else, in another factory than the shirt. You would have black and white shorts but a colorful top which maybe wouldn't make much sense. Now I think we're doing much better over the last couple years. I think the future's looking also better for men's tennis in terms of tennis.

Personally, I love the outfit as a whole.

BTW, why do you care so much about players' outfits? Each and every player has their own personalities and tastes. Let them wear what they want, unless they show up naked or half-naked. Federer likes and appreciates the tradition and class of Wimbledon so that he dresses up in old-fashioned look. I don't find it anything wrong. He would never wear that outfit in any other tournaments.

Then what do you think about that Nadal wears sleeveless shirts and pirates even when he plays at the Centre Court of Wimbledon? Some of people don't like it and think that he violates the tradition of Wimbledon while others esp. young people love it. How about Serena wearing a jumpsuit and boots? Don't you have any issue with those outfits? Aren't they looking stupid?

There's nothing wrong with this outfit. Now, I remember when I first saw Nadal with his women pants; now that was hilarious. There were a lot of threads of how ridiculous he looked. Then he came to the US Open with a tight version of the outfit; my husband laughed so hard. He does not watch tennis but he remembers Nadal outfit.

Um...:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:

Comments like these come off as SO narcissistic. Its one thing to say you are doing it as an homage to the traditions of the past. Or that its a goofy, kind of fun thing...nothing too serious. But it looks like Roger has been drinking too much from the Serena/Venus lemonade. If I were an opponent, I would take it as an insult...that Roger is too haughty for his own good.

But, I have to admit, the outfit looks good.

You do understand that he doesn't just come out and say these things and that he is asked questions to which he gives answers don't you?

What's wrong with wanting to look good?

What's wrong with wanting to look good?

That was an attitude that crept into the WTA tour years ago with Anna, and NOW look at the "wonderful" product that is women's tennis. The tennis court is an arena for battle, not the walkway for "Le Roger", the next coming of Zoolander.;)

I think matching and looking is important. You're going out and playing in front of people for their entertainment, not down at your local club. I'd rather have any player talk about needing to match headbands with shirts and shorts, which looks good, than saying "I kind of just wish I could wear my paint-stained T-shirt with my gray sweatpants for every tournament. It's bullshit that they expect us to dress up. This is a game, not a wedding or a prom."

In my view there's nothing wrong with wanting to look good and show yourself in the best way - as long as it doesn't detract from the tennis. With the WTA sometimes it feels far too much about the fashion and not enough about the quality of the tennis - who cares if Maria Sharapova can't volley for shit, she looks nice in the dress, etc. I don't see that problem with the men who make a bit of an effort, certainly not with Federer anyway :)

^^^ :yeah:

Being the best at your job, while simultaneously looking good while doing it, need not be mutually exclusive worlds. The outfit in question may not be to the taste of everyone, but it doesn't deserve the vitriol handed down to it in the press.

You would think they'd be too busy covering things that are of more importance, but I guess not. ;)
