Chris Fowler, tennis announcer?

Has anyone been watching the ESPN2 coverage and the interactions between Carrillo, Cahill, and Fowler. I don't like his American jock boy thing at all.

I pine for the days of Cliff, John, and Mary.

By the way, Drysdale and Enberg are working an off court together.

I don't mind Fowler that much. At least he isn't spouting verbal vomit like Dick Enberg. Enberg is the devil. And I don't care for Mary either.

Mary Carrillo/Mary Jo Fernandez needs to learn that the William sisters arnt the best thing that ever happened to Tennis. Esp Mary Jo in that departnement, she like pretty much ass kissing any of them when they walk on court.

Enberg is not too bad in my eyes, sure he brings up random comparisons to other sports but w/e. Im American, I understand them.

Cahill is acaully pretty good. He is insightful and makes the tennis seem interesting.

I loved Fowler/Gilbert. They were the best team and were histerical.

It's not just that Enberg brings up random comparisons. He never shuts up. It's like he feels like there can never be a moment of silence, even if just means he's saying "And Federer misses the backhand." I mean, we're watching it--we don't need him to tell us what just happened. Plus he tries to say something in the most complicated way possible because he thinks he sounds smarter. I despise his commentary with a fiery passion. :fiery:

But yeah, I enjoyed Fowler putting Gilbert in his place too.

I cannot stand listening to that moronic, talking head, Mary Carillo. She drives me insane, everything about her eats my nerves. How is it this woman has been poised as an expert. She was a mediocre talent at best and she talks like she was a shot making genius..she has the answer for everyone...PLEASE someone get her of of the air!!!

don't mind fowler, like p.mac and enberg, absolutely HATE that waste of skin drysdale. He's by far the worst commentator of all time.

Very funny stuff. You can tell the second they are near each other that Fowler hates B-rad.

And I'll say it again.

Cahill is the best thing to happen to ESPN. He thinks like a coach and has really relevant things to say.

After Reading Spadea's book,

He mentioned that Brad and His father would get into sports debates and that Brad would act like he is a god of sports knowledge, yet Spadea's dad could name the entire Red Sox lineup with their batting average.

I can see Brad/Chris going at it for top dog of sports.

I like Chris Fowler's enthusiasm for tennis and its' personalities. He's relatively new to the sport. He really took to tennis after he became a moderator at majors. His 'jock boy' angle on tennis happenings is different and interesting. The guy before him (Traybert??) didn't bring much to the table.

I'm comfortable with the group of commentators at ESPN2 for this major. They're doing their jobs and they don't bother me enough to interrupt my enjoyment of the tennis.

I want to add to the other voices who enjoy Darren's insightful commentary. He's smart and likeable.

On the Williams commentary from all of the talking heads. The Williams sisters are good press. At any time in tennis they're the best thing that ever happened to the game or the worst. Right now they're the only US women of note so they're great! ;)

I was really hoping Venus would lose yesturday and Molik to kick Serena's ass today.

but NO.

I have hear how "much fitter" Serena is for the rest of the tournament and how she won the AO. They make it sound like she went through what blake did by how much they keep bringing it up.

Fowler's just about as good as anyone on that entire channel, save Cahill. Given Fowler's lack of experience compared with Darren, he acquits himself beautifully.

Oh good I am glad that I am not the only one who can't stand Mary Carillo BUT I wish all the commentators would just be quiet - I miss the good old days of Dan Maskell (yes I am that old) who would just utter the odd comment and then say a few words at the end of the game. All this prattling on makes me hit the mute button and it isn't even about the game of tennis, which makes matters worse!

I enjoy Chris Fowler and Darren to but for the French Open we had Australian lot and they were fantastic bring back Fred Stolle and team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never heard Dan Maskell, but I've heard Fred Stolle and I thought he was pretty good. When John Barrett was doing the ATP Masters commentary I thought he was insightful and did just the right amout of talking. Jason Goodall is good too. I wish the ESPN commentators would model their broadcast more after those guys.

I like Chris Fowler too. When he first started, I could not stand him mainly because his lack of knowledge. But looking back, it's not his fault when he was thrown into the job without much preparation. But he's professional and learned the sport well.

Since he's the only person there who's not an ex-player or ex-coach, he provided a different view, more from a fan's or viewer's prospect which is a good balance.

ESPN is terrible because of the producers, not the on air idiots. They keep showing the same matches over and over. They're going to show Roddick and Serena each at least 4 times today.
Now a Sharapova match from yesterday. They have plenty of tape of today matches that they haven't shown, and they'll never show it.

That's why tennis is dead in the US. It's not treated as a sport by ESPN or NBC.
It's a low rated joke to them, and they treat tennis fans like manure.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tangy. I'd love to clone Cahill if it were possible. He's got a great personality, and is really perfect for commentary, in many ways. ;)

EDIT: As to the original point of the thread- I wasn't a Fowler fan at first, but he's grown on me a bit more now. He's good people. :)

to be compared to the likes of her. Nothing against Federer but

if I hear her gush like Old Faithful one more time about Roger...

I actually quite like Chris. He's smooth, and much more professional than any of the other ones really are. I miss him combined with Brad as well, his expressions were just too funny when Brad was spouting off .

I like Cahill too. I did not like the pairing of Enberg and Drysdale together. They're very similar, making a lot of comments about what just happened, that we watched as well. I don't mind them too much if they're with someone else, but not together.

I know everyone hates Carillo, but I don't mind her as long as she's just inserting a dry comment every now and again and not going on about Federer, Hingis, or how much she hates the Hawkeye system.

They ALL do that. Makes me want to stab something.

Carillo hating on Federer? She's the one who made the moronic comment during the AO about how it was like he could bend time. She worships him just like they all do. She really used to hate Andre Agassi back in the early days though.

I have to say I loathe Chris Fowler. And it boils down to one moment, during the USO last year I think. ESPN was being it's normal stupid self regarding coverage, meaning showing the Americans and then when they were over showing them AGAIN. And Chris Fowler is sitting in the studio and mentions that some other match (can't remember who, one i wanted to see, and a big name player) had gotten underway and then said "....we're not going to SHOW it to you, hahaha." God. I was so pissed off. Yes, ESPN's crappy coverage is just hilarious. Jackass.

They did it again today...rain delay so instead of showing tape of matches that they hadn't already shown on air, they replayed Serena, then replayed Roddick, and then replayed Henman/Moya for about the fourth time in two days.

I remember seeing Sportscentury on him and she was saying some shit about him, like she didn't talk to him and was very critical of him when his ranking dropped. Thats proably what got Andre to train harder Mary Carillo not approving.

I remember that moment and actually loved it. It was when ESPN was sharing coverage with NBC and Fowler seemed pretty frustrated by the stupidity that is NBC hogging match coverage of a good match only to show it taped. (And in those situations ESPN is not at fault). Fowler just seemed to think the whole thing was ridiculous and I totally agreed with it. I thought it was pretty awesome that Fowler was pointing out the idiocy of them not being able to show the match live. It wasn’t USO though because the USA network covers that.

I actually like Fowler. It can be nice to have someone have a lot of enthusiasm for the sport- as a fan of it and not because he was a player, etc. It can be nice to see someone who is not traditional tennis announcer just be more of a “fan.” I like Fowler on College Game Day- and like him covering tennis.

He is funny to listen to because he doesn't always know what he is talking about or just copies what someone else said. Despite this I still like him as a commentator and he's much easier to tolerate than Carillo. She tries to be funny all the time when she's not. Plus she jumps on player bandwagons too often.

Fowler is ok. He knows the sport well enough and brings a little bit of an outsider perspective on things which is sometimes refreshing especially since a lot of the long time commentators have such a sappy reverence for everything that goes on in the sport. Fowler has a slight cynical edge and will take some veiled digs at the absurdity of certain things about pro tennis that the others would never dare to and I like that.

Enberg is senile and needs to retire. I used to really dislike Carillo but Evert is SO bad that suddenly Carillo is a relief.

Fowler's a cool guy...talked to him (American football) for a few minutes when College Gameday came to our university and he visited our camp-out site . He probably never thought he was going to get into doing tennis but he's acquitted himself well and knows a heck of a lot about the game (moreso than any of these other ESPN host people who they've tried). Plus he seems like the type who gets along really well with the wacky personalities that make up ESPN tennis...

Fowler is great and a real tennis fan, even though you can tell he's never played it professionally.

The interactions between Fowler and Gilbert are amazing. Gilbert spent the whole first 4 days complaining and mentioning that Wimbledon can seed the players however they want and that there are always theories, etc. I tweeted/emailed him a half a dozen times that they have a formula for the men. He ignored it. I tweeted it at Fowler and Gilbert hasn't mentioned it since. :)

I think he's one of the best ones. It does not really matter if they played pro or not because the ones that did rarely give inside info on that stuff. They keep it hush anyway. PMac never talks about his pro days. Chris Evert is evidence enough that a great player dosen't make a great announcer.

I like Chris Fowler. Yes, he's middle aged, and has the whole pretty-boy jock thing going on, but his personality is pleasant. I don't care for Enberg though. Enberg is too old to be on television, has slurred speech at times, and is EXTREMELY uneasy on the eyes - he looks like a skeleton with all those dark circles around his hollow eyes. Darren Cahill is another guy who bugs me though - he seems like a nice guy, but the accent drives me a bit crazy, and I find him quite dull. Pam Shriver drives me crazy with her personality.

I do like Chris Evert, Mary Joe Fernandez, Patrick McEnroe, John McEnroe, Mary Carrillo, and Brad Gilbert.

Outside of John McEnroe and Brad Gilbert I can take or leave any of the others. Fowler overall does a much better job than Enberg or Drysdale as the "play by play" guy.

Women don't belong on a professional tennis court and they don't belong commentating on professional tennis. Fowler's OK but anything beats having to watch the WTA or the attempts by the women commentators to draw some sort of equivalency between tennis and the WTA :o
