Yeah, you can watch them practise, although it's easier to do so at Rosmalen :)

I am thinking about going maybe one day.. Would be the Monday probably (or otherwise the Wednesday.. can't go on the other days). I would like to see Gael Monfils in action (he received a wildcard too, he's not on the list in this thread yet). I went to Wimbledon and saw just a little bit of him against Todd Rushby (which he won), but not enough..

I wasn't very impressed, to be honest. What I saw of him, was at the point when he was letting Rushby (cheered on by the local crowd) come back in the match. That's why I'd like to see more of him.

OMG

First round: Van Scheppingen - Navarro.. Seriously, Dennis couldn't have asked for a worse draw here. He's not a claycourt guy, when Salvador always does well in Scheveningen.

Not impressed with the OOP for tomorrow, so I decided not to go either. This is also based on the bad weather! I might still go on Wednesday though.. I would like to see Alex Calatrava (great player; great guy) and Gael Monfils. Raemon Sluiter too, of course. And the more interesting doubles teams aren't playing tomorrow either (Lopez-Moron & Benfele Alvarez.. )

OK, so stubborn as I am.. I decided to go to Scheveningen today anyway, despite the bad weather forecast. And I am happy I went, cause there weren't any clouds throughout the day! It was a very warm, dry and sunny day so I got a bit of a tan too :p I'll take you through the matches I saw..

Dennis van Scheppingen (3) - Salvador Navarro

OK. I arrived just in time for this match, for I decided to go at like 10:30 and matches started at noon and I had to travel too. But I saw the entire match ;) I really thought this was one of the worst possible opponents for Dennis, because Salvador always does so well here in Scheveningen, but this time it was just absolute crap. The problem was, that his serve was so off. And his second serve is really weak, so Dennis managed to overpower Salvador with his return. And Dennis' serve was good, so he didn't have too many problems to hold his own serve. I have to correct Wokkeltje here though: the score was 6-3 6-2. You have to hand Salvador that ;)

Julien Jeanpierre (7) - Francesco Aldi

Jeanpierre did really well at Roland Garros, so I had pretty high expectations. He started off so very poorly, not managing to play anything other than lame topspin balls. THe problem was that Francesco didn't take advantage of that and kept making unforced errors. After a few games, Julien started playing really well and he made very few unforced errors. A very good, solid performance and I can see him go far this tournament.

Peter Wessels - Jakub Herm-Zahlava

I like both players, though it had been a few years that I had seen them play in real life. This was the weakest of the matches I saw, with Wessels making incredible unforced errors. I really wonder how he even managed to make some of the mistakes he made. Jakub didn't get in the match in the first set.. The second set was close, but it wasn't that much special.

Guillermo Garcia Lopez (8) - Juan Pablo Brzezicki

Now this was an epic match. Absolutely one of the best of the recent matches I've seen (which includes a day at Wimbledon and 5 days at Rosmalen) and definitely a great match for a first round at a Challenger! Two great clay court players! Great, long rallies with twists and turns and beautiful shots. It was very, very close, but Guillermo was just better at the more important moments. Guillermo now has a new fan, though I was quite fond of Juan Pablo too :) Meet two of my new fav. players ;)
I can see Guillermo win this tournament! :yeah:

Francisco Fogues - Fernando Vicente

Vicente's game has been whack for months now, but at least his personality is still the same. Always shouting, complaining, spitting, throwing his racquet around. Fogues was very calm. There were some nice rallies in this match and I thought it would turn when Fernando came back from 7-5 3-0 to 3-3, but then he gave it away. He made some weird decisions and I just saw very few signs of the good top 100 player he used to be..

Boy Wijnmalen (WC) - Julien Varlet

Wijnmalen's game is not good. He's got a good serve and he plays risky tennis. All or nothing, really. Today, it was all. He served extremely well, preventing Varlet from getting any chances on his serve. Varlet himself didn't play particularly well, still recovering from injury I think, and it was a surprisingly quick win for Boy!

Also, I spotted these other players: Björn Phau, Edwin Kempes, Raemon Sluiter, Fred Hemmes Jr., Richard Gasquet and I saw Gael Monfils and Martin Verkerk practising. Oh and I saw a tiny bit of a doubles match between Jakub Herm-Zahlava and Holger Fischer against Bart Beks and Matwé Middelkoop, which had a 6-4 6-4 scoreline in favour of the Germans, I think..

Francisco Fogues - Thierry Ascione

OK I went again yesterday and basically everything seemed to go wrong.. I arrived an hour late  so I only saw two games of the match between Francisco Fogues and Thierry Ascione. Ascione was the big favourite in this match, but he made error after error those two games and I imagine it had been like that throughout the second set. Francisco doesn't have a very impressive game; it's decent. But if he can beat Vicente (on clay!) AND Ascione, then you're doing well.

Peter Wessels - Julien Jeanpierre

In the other report, I said that Julien impressed me because he made so few unforced errors. He was very steady and uses a lot of spin. Against Wessels, he just wasn't steady enough, due to the wind. Peter has a very pressing game, which led me to think that his game is far more likely to be influenced by the wind than Julien's game, but I guess it wasn't. It was quite a mediocre match, I thought. Both players were whining and there weren't that many good rallies. Although, there was one terrific one, for which Julien even got an ovation from Raemon Sluiter ;)

Fred Hemmes Jr. & Dennis van Scheppingen - Robin Haase & Steven Korteling

If last match was mediocre, then this was pretty much poor. Both teams didn't play well at all. At times there were good shots and points, but most of the time points were decided by errors. Even easy smashes were often missed. I am sorry Wokkeltje, but the first time I've seen Robin in action, I am not impressed at all. In fact, I thought Steven (especially the first 1½ sets) was the better half of the team.

Raemon Sluiter & Paul Logtens - Edwin Kempes & Peter Wessels

It had started raining now and at a certain point it was even pouring. That didn't stop this match from being played. Compared to the other doubles match, this one was of a much higher quality and also was way more entertaining. Those guys were also happy to be playing, even though the rain wasn't pleasant (especially to Raemon, who was sick a couple of days ago and is still recovering from the flu). When it was 6-3 5-3 and 0-30 on Wessels' serve, Raemon or Paul (can't remember who) hit a lob which could have easily been returned by Edwin or Peter, if they'd only run, but I guess they all just wanted to get out of the rain by that point.

Guillermo Garcia Lopez - Florent Serra

This was the match I was looking forward to the most. But it was still raining heavily, so I left too, thinking and hoping that match was going to be postponed anyway, so that I wouldn't be mad with myself for leaving ;) And it hasn't been played. Vamos Guillermo today though!
