Marcos is playing his 3rd tournament in 3 weeks this week in Kosice, Slovak Republic. I'm really happy to see him having some sort of normal schedule on the pro tour to get his ranking up. I'm hoping that he can break the top 200 again very soon.

He's playing doubles again with Teimuraz this week.

GO MARCOS!!!!:bounce: :bounce:

Iza
01-05-2005, 05:57 PM
exactly! it's still good that he fought well and only his lack of experience made him lose. (tho Devilder is also a youngster but he's 21 and he's more experienced than Marcos)

Iza
01-05-2005, 05:59 PM
where did he play? where do you guys find out his schedule?

he played in Chennai and I found out his results on the ATP official site and on this site :) . I still don't know where he plays next week. Maybe he's gonna qualify for Sydney or Auckland or chose to play a challenger. I think a challenger would be the best option so he can have the chance to play more matches ahead of the Aussie Open and do a big breakthrough there :rocker:

Iza
01-05-2005, 06:08 PM
actually there are no challengers nest week. so either he chooses qualifying for auckland or sydney and see what he can do then and after it go and qualify for the AO (that means on firday he has to be in Melbourne) or skip tournaments next week and only play quallies for AO

KaZa

Stepping Up
by Ashley Browne
Tuesday, 18 January, 2005

Take a look at the honour roll for the Australian Open junior boy's championship and you can divide the names into three distinct groups.

There are those that leap straight off the page such as Stefan Edberg (1983), Andy Roddick (2000), Jason Stoltenberg (1987), Thomas Enqvist (1991) and Nicolas Kiefer (1995), who used the Australian junior title as a stepping stone to long and distinguished careers in the professional game.

Then there are names such as James Bailey (1993), Bjorn Rhenqvist (1996), Daniel Elsner (1997) and Kristian Pless (1999) who, it would be fair to conclude, have failed to reach the heights of some other Australian junior champions.

Finally, there are those whose future the tennis jury is still considering. These are players such as Janco Tipsarevic (2001), Marcos Baghdatis (2003) and Gael Monfils (2004) who are still finding their feet in professional ranks with varying degrees of success.

Six former Australian junior champions made it into the main draw of the men's singles at Australian Open 2005 and four were winners. Tipsarevic, Baghdatis, Monfils and Roddick all advanced to the second-round, while Enqvist and Kiefer were defeated.

In 1999, the year Enqvist lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the final at Melbourne Park, he was ranked No.4 in the world. The enigmatic Kiefer, whose career-best ranking was also No.4 - in January 2000 - has twice made the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park and once at Wimbledon.

Both have enjoyed stellar careers and are still in the thick of things, but it is the Frenchman Monfils who may turn out to be the dux of the Australian Open junior class.

Compared by many to former French star Yannick Noah, he finished last year as the top-ranked junior and made the quarter-finals of the first ATP tournament he entered at Metz. Later in the year he beat Enqvist in the first-round of the Masters Series tournament in Paris, after coming through the qualifying event.

A flock of French media monitors his every movement in Melbourne and notable tennis figures such as Brad Gilbert have Monfils tabbed for bigger things.

But for the more typical growing pains of a highly-ranked junior as he enters the world of professional tennis, you can't go past Baghdatis, whose junior win here two years ago sent Cyprus into a minor frenzy.

He enjoyed a stellar 2003, winning the title at Melbourne Park and then saluting in four of five Futures finals he contested. He built an 11-4 record on the Challenger circuit and enjoyed a ranking rise of 375 places to finish at No.179.

His start to 2004 was more humble, with a groin injury keeping him sidelined for the first six months of the year. But he made rapid improvement once he returned the court, running up an 18-10 record in Challenger play, including a defeat of the talented Dominik Hrbaty, and being one of only two players to take a set off the rampaging Roger Federer at the US Open. No less a player than Andre Agassi was the other.

Baghdatis has fond memories of his victorious week in Melbourne two years ago but they are also distant memories given the trials and tribulations of the professional circuit.

"It's tough, really tough," he said on Monday. "Open tennis is more consistent, more solid and it takes a lot more practice."

"In junior tennis you can win by talent alone but when you go to professional tennis it takes lots of hard work. There's a big difference."

Baghdatis takes a level-headed approach to his tennis. He chooses not to compare his ranking and results with those of the other stand-out juniors of his time. His short-term goal is to play better on Wednesday than he did on Monday and to defeat Ivan Ljubicic in the second-round. Longer-term goals are a ranking in the top 100 and a tournament win.

"Slowly, slowly I'm improving and I think I'm getting better," he says. "It's a slog playing challengers, futures and satellite events, but it's a nice life playing tennis and I feel great about it."

Do you live here in the L.A. area? I was considering buying tickets but unless Robby Ginepri gets chosen for the team the entire squad is  for me.

My ultimate dream would be to see Alex on the team but hell would probably have to freeze over for McEnroe first . I don't think I want Alex playing under him anyway :).

South Orange County. The squad doesn't really do it for me either, but its the whole Davis Cup experience that appeals to me. Even though I hate the chest bump thing, I would like to see the twins because they really do know how to play doubles and I think it would be very entertaining.

I woke up and the first thing I did was come downstairs turn on the computer and check how Marcos did. OMG !!!!!! I don't know if I will see any of it on my tapes from last night, but I read about the crazy flare lighting fans. Did they get removed from the stadium? It seems a bit dangerous. Anyway, I'm so happy that an "unknown" that I started following last year is doing so well.

hey what up y'all?.
cool to find this thread..
known marcos as a kid-used to play myself juniors in cyprus.
saw him in Bratislava a couple of months back-after not seeing him in years- where he made it through the quallies to beat Hrbaty in the final!!:bigclap: for his age he has a really strong mental game, and the positive attitude and the charisma he brings to the court is remarkable. Just to see in to what a great player he's developed is amazing..and with his talent the room 4 improvement is enormous! (he has made us-the small tennis community of cyprus so proud)

Well done Marcos in AO:bigclap:.his ranking should be up2 90-100 so no more quallies which is great.

I was the one who said that and yes it's true, he is having a little break to get over the elbow problem and it's not that serious, so he'll do some more training back in Paris and probably be out for 3 weeks, he has nothing to defend for the first half of the year.

relief to hear it is nothing serious and he will only be out for a couple of weeks. It was just that i was thinking of last year and how he missed the first half due to injury, and then the extra months he needed to get back to winning ways..had me concerned 4a while.
But cool let him rest, train hard, and hopefully he comes back even stronger and makes that extra step..win a title!

Tricky_Forehand
02-04-2005, 09:29 AM
He was scheduled to play Cherbourg but as GWH said he has no points to defend. Cherbourg was his first tourney last year and he lost 1st round. I would really hate this for Marcos if this is true. He breaks the top 100 (though not by much) and now may have to sit out a while . This is almost like Rafa Nadal the last two years except Rafa was firmly in the top 50 both times he got injured (that kept him out of RG).

I wonder if he made it just a bit worse by playing through it at Melbourne. Doesn't really matter...if i was playing that well, I would've played through the pain too.

I think he will come back fine :yeah:

Action Jackson

Marcos had a problem with tennis elbow in Australia and was going to take some time off after it anyway and originally was going to play Cherbourg, but he had surgery to rid the problem.

He has no points to defend up until French Open, so he'll be fine, though he will struggle a bit on the clay, but as long as he wins a few matches before RG, he'll be fine.

Great - just found this thread!! Wonderful. Thanks for the news on Baggy. I've been looking for him since seeing him last yr. in NYC & that little bit espn showed v. Roger @AO. He'd really improved since AO. I saw this wicked tailing forehand that left even Roger the Greatest flailing in futility. I didn't know if he was getting screwed out of tournaments 'cuz they were IMG - US hard courts - & he wasn't represented/owned by them, or what was going on. Judging by his results in Australia I expected him to pop right up to the #30's in rankings & move up from there this yr. It's been driving me nuts trying to figure out what happened. HE'S MY ABSOLUTE FAVE AMONG THE KIDS. (Hate Raffy, the Thug.)

I just checked his results from previous week. Guy he lost to isn't even a journeyman - Stoppini, ~25, yet no ht. or wt. even listed...ranked below #230, yet Baggy lost to him in 3 sets. So, he's scraping the rust off his game quickly.

I've seen so little of him, that I don't have much of a read. Has anyone heard anything about expectations. Is he as highly thought of as Gasquet? Is he expected to break the Top 10? I'm a little concerned about this injury thing - hope it's not caused by faulty mechanics.

Pls. let us know where he's playing next. It's unclear from the Rome site, if they're even having qualies, or if it's ~51 guys, w/top ones all getting byes in 1st round. No mention on the website - but maybe it's an old/cheap website.

So, anyway, very happy to have found you all. And pls. give us all the info. you can from the Cypriot newspapers. Thanks so very much. Love his smile, love his tennis - moves well, GREAT HANDS, good size, just enough power w/out being a goddamn thug. Has the Soul of a Tennis Player.

 It's not that easy to move up in the rankings. The fact that he has stuck around the 90s after being out since January is great. Obviously, it helped that he had no points to defend but the fact that he got into the top 100 so quickly is awesome.

Guy he lost to isn't even a journeyman

I just have to say how much I hate that word in bold. I won't speak it and I won't type it because I consider it to be one of the more disrespectful labels. I've even heard that word used to describe top 20 players  .

Yes, Italia Masters has Quallies...32 Draw. And Marcos is in.

Just because a player has talent doesn't automatically mean that they move up the rankings. Is there a point in having unrealistic expectations at this moment? Marcos needs to develop, improve his physical conditioning and also remain injury free.

The reason he hasn't played is that he has been injured, these things happen in pro sports. As for journeyman, everone apart from Federer is a journeyman.

What becomes of him as a player well as long as he can play pain free, with a smile on his face and keep on improving then his ranking will look after itself.

Christ - looks like he came back too soon, or hurt something else!! Damn. It looks suspiciously like he's pulled out of Paris, though I've never read the early lists before so I had to post a question to decode the symbols. He's listed #91. Then next name on list says after the name @91. I suspect that means that #91 has pulled out & that name is to be put in it's place!!! If so, he's gone........from the claycourt season again this yr...

What's going on here? Why the panic?

There isn't anything suggesting that he is going to miss Roland Garros and there are quite a few players who were on the list of qualies at Rome and aren't in the main draw.

He is in RG at the moment, so easy up on the gloom.

Go look at the damn Paris list. It looks like he's pulled out & been replaced by someone else. If I'm misreading it, please explain. As I indicated, I'm new to reading these lists. Below him, #91, it lists someone else saying after their name @91. If that doesn't mean replace the above name for the 91st slot w/this name, what does it mean?

Iza

doesn't it mean using the "frozen" rankings just like Guga and Younes did a few times this year?
