Last year he was injured during large parts of the clay season and the grass was also mixed: There was a tournament win in Nottingham, but two early defeats: 1st round Wimbledon, 2nd round Halle, one has to admit, though, that the opponent in both cases was a certain..... Roger Federer. Due to his much better ranking this year, he won't draw Roger at very early stages of grass tourneys. :) And I have nothing against meeting those two in finals. ;)

yeah..
but i remember he performed quite well against roger in halle, didn't he??
and for the wimby's 1st round loss...i have nothing to say:p
maybe he was tired after nottingham:p
i still hope for the quarter-final in wimby this year
i still cannot believe that richard cannot perform well with his talent:o

hey im new! my name is mariana and im from peru. like all here im a huge richard fan, however i feel your pain as well! i cant understand how a player with that talent (surely more talented than most players who are ranked higher than him) cant seem to find the consistency he needs to stop being a promise and start being a reality. im pretty sure its a psychological problem, which makes me happy, because that means he can work on that and succeed! although i get really pissed after he loses cuz it makes me angry (how can he lose with that one hand backhand?!) i will always support him! and hope he does well in grass now...! It's because Ljubicic was a semifinalist last year at RG, but this year he lost in the 3rd, so he practically lost 375 points . so after the french open, Gasquet's points will be 1900 while Ljubo's 1885. However, there''s possibility other lower ranking players could move up over him. :D

Exactly - if he doesn't take advantage of his seedings and looses matches he shouldn't it doesn't really matter what his seed is... but those "bad" matches are over now.

Even if Richie does pass Ljubi wouldn't he be 12 not 11? Unless Haasy dropped below richie too...Anyway I hope Rich can defend his Nottingham title this year, otherwise that's alot of points down the gurglar...I honestly feel that Richie has set the bar too low for himself, he's said that he doesn't mind his bad results coz he reckons he stil has 3-4 years to peak but he should be aiming for the best results now! Not just hope to peak for a very brief period in his mid-20's!

He has improved his English - no more one or two word answers, although his English answers are still not nearly as thoughtful as what he gives in French - he really is quite articulate in French (from what I can tell from translations). However I'm impressed since I could not even understand what was being asked of me in French yet alone answer anything. And of course as most American women do, I LOVE the French accent!

Can't wait till next week. Does anyone know if there will be any video streaming - live or otherwise from Halle?

IF he wins halle ...,

That is a BIG "IF". I am hoping RIchie does realy well in the next few weeks but seems lately he always has or his fans(including me) have an excuse - hopefully that was just clay court excuses. He needs to play enough to get his confidence back because when RIchie is confident he is really dangerous but we all saw what happens when he isn't... He seems to like Nottingham but I'm not very confident that he could win it three in a row - if he plays it, I hope I'm wrong. Kiss of death - his picture on the poster for Nottingham - hope it's not too much pressure for him?? But first it's Halle. ALLEZ Richie, a grass court trophy would be nice about right now. :worship:

I really miss seeing him play. Between the Masters Series TV and The Tennis Channel, I actually saw a lot of his matches during clay court season but it looks like the only tournament I'll actually be able to see during grass court season is Wimbly IF the tournament does the great multi-court on line video streaming that they did last year.

He already was on the poster of Nottingham 2006 so I don't think it's a pressure for him.

IMO, in RG 2007 he suffered from the pressure HE put on himself.. not from the pressure of the medias. The pressure from the medias would have come later... (if that makes some sense)

I don't know what to say. :tape: :tape: :tape:

I do. I was already worried before the match started, irrelevant of the opponent. When I saw Richard in his press-conference after the loss to Vliegen, I immediately said to myself: this will take some time. I saw it all: the despair, the disappointment, the pain. I did not expect him to spend some days in Sérignan and come back as if nothing happened.

He just does not seem the person to take defeats and pressure lightly. One may call that mentally weak, one may also call it human. He will need time to digest it and I still mean Roland Garros, not Halle.;)

Sure it's disappointing but it's not the end of the world, if he deserved to win today he would have won. Maybe we have to lower our expectations of him. Let's see what happens in Nottingham now.

I was expecting for grass to make him bounce back from his RG loss.

Now the question is what will it take for him to get the confidence back?

I just can't remember his last good performance...

I thought it would not easy for him to be scheduled that early morning, considering his loss to Melzer when he played at similar situation.
But it actually happened what I was worried. But you know, it's not all the reasons he lost.
It's not funny anymore, I don't even have any spurring comments for him hoping to do better next time anymore.
I sincerely feel sorry for him, big words of cheering are needed.

I had honestly hoped for that. Trying to get some pleasure out of the doubles and adapt to grass for the rest of the season. Taking into account that both Richard and Olie lost their singles matches today, I do like this result, more than I normally care about doubles. ;)

Arghhhh!

I didn't expect a win at Halle but at least past the first round. He REALLY REALLY needed to be able to pull out a tight match to get his confidence back. I am really disappointed but just imagine how sad RIchie must be --trying to get over RG and runs into this. This qualifer is supposed to a grass court specialist - typical Richard luck. I'll be interested to see how far this guy goes in the tournament.

I don't even dare look at the GM messages as all those who think Gasquest is overrated are probably having a ball with this one.

It's going to be a tough road now, hope RIchie has a VERY good sports psychologist because I would guess he needs that more than a coach right now.

Did anyone see the match? Did Richard play well and just ran into someone better today OR was he in panic mode and unable to work through the match? If he played well and just got outplayed today, then that's the way things go BUT if he froze and went into panic mode like in RG - that's another story.

On to Nottingham and Wimbly. It's another "learning experience" HANG TOUGH RICHIE

"Je ne crois pas avoir mal joué"(eurosport.fr)

"Je ne sais pas vraiment ce qui n'a pas fonctionné, a déclaré Gasquet. Il semblait plus à l'aise sur le gazon après avoir participé aux qualifications ce week-end, il a vraiment bien joué et bien servi. Je ne crois pas avoir mal joué, mais je suis très déçu d'être éliminé dès le premier tour, bien sûr."

Schu, that's what was posted in the GM thread.

Pakistani qualifier stuns Gasquet

Seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet became the biggest first-round casualty at the ATP tournament in Halle, Germany, on Tuesday when he was shocked by Pakistani qualifier Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
The 27-year-old from Lahore shocked sixth-seed Gasquet in straight sets, knocking out the 20-year-old who is ranked 11th in the world, 293 places higher than Qureshi.

Qureshi was delighted to take out a seeded player in straight sets and after winning the first set on a tie-breaker, he put in a commanding display to take the second 6-4 as the Frenchman struggled to modify his game on grass.

"It's not about winning my first-round match, it's about beating a player ranked just outside the top ten," said Qureshi, who had the advantage of three qualify games over the weekend to get used to playing on grass.

"The hard work for the last 12 years is paying off, I learned a lot last year from some of the mistakes I made and I just kept telling myself I could do it.

"I went out with the clear plan of moving him around and it paid off.

"I had tie-breakers in both sets of my last two qualifying games over the weekend, so when it got to 6-6 in the first-set tie-breaker, I knew I had a good chance.

"Having normally played at Queen's and in Nottingham, I only decided to switch to Halle last year and the move has paid off in only my second appearance.

"I really enjoyed it last year, but I went out in the first round, but I am hoping to stay a lot longer this year."

Qureshi will play the winner of Tuesday's match between German number one Philipp Kohlschreiber and Dutch qualifier Raemon Sluiter.

His beaten opponent, Gasquet, looked stunned by the defeat, but said his Pakistani opponent deserved the win.

"I don't really know what went wrong," said the French number one. :o

"He seemed much happier on grass having played the qualifiers at the weekend, he really played well and served well.

"I got just one break-point, while he got several.

"I don't feel like I played badly, but I am very disappointed to go out of the first round, of course."

In the day's other early games, Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, ranked 53rd in the world, eased into the second round with a 6-3, 7-6 (11/9) win over South African qualifier Wesley Moodie.

Santoro has a tough second-round assignment against fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic.

German qualifier Simon Stadler beat wildcard compatriot Mischa Zverev in straight-sets 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) and will face seventh-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the second round.

Some positives is that he will be more well rested to defend Nottingham, he can focus more on winning the doubles title with Olivier ( :yeah: ), he won't have anything to defend next year, and he's at a career high number 11 in the world.

Pretty shocked he lost and disappointed, but its a match and it could have been worse I guess.

Seems it is better to always UNDERESTIMATE how well Richie will do. So with that in mind - here's to just getting past the 1st round in Nottingham, maybe I can be really optmistic and hope for a win in round 2 as well...

But it's hard for me to aim that low for him - still expect at least a semis from him next week and looking at the entry list - a win is certainly possible but just saying that is the kiss of death for him so... 2nd round ;)

Ljubicic will be up over richard the next week no matter what. if Berdych defends his points, he's up too. But it's just one week, because he doesn't have any points to defend at wimbledon, so the following week if he defends his title or gains some points, it wouldn't be a total disaster.
his current ranking is not like what he earns himself anyway. he should do much^2389477 better at Wimbledon.

From the official website:

Birthday boy Gasquet celebrates in style

Top seed Richard Gasquet celebrated his 21st birthday with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over Vince Spadea of the USA on Monday.

The young Frenchman was presented with a chocolate cake while the crowd sung “happy birthday”.

"I expected a lot of myself in this match and I'm really happy (to have won),” said Gasquet.

“Yes, for sure I was a little bit scared … I had to do a great match … it's not easy to win as Spadea is a great player but I like playing on the (grass) courts here."

Gasquet added: "Of course I want to win another title here (at Nottingham) … if I continue to play like this I can maybe win.”

Asked if it was a special feeling to win on his 21st birthday, he confided: "I didn't want to lose today on my 21st birthday. If I win on Saturday maybe then I can celebrate."

I kind of agree- but he needs to keep trying to improve! Sometimes he speaks rather well, maybe he's just terrible after matches because he's so tired and can't be bothered trying?

I'm so so so sorry and a little angry...He must to win against all the other French player, he is the number one and he must to show that , ALWAYS!!
He lost so many points too... 1765 next week, right?? I think it will be hard to go into TOP10, where he must to be yet!!!

I think it was a tank, not from the start, but with the first set lost. The stats are outright dreadful, not a single return point on Clément's serve. The Wimby draw is indeed worrying, but Richard's best results in the past often came, when he was not expected to do anything of signifance. So, why not again? ;)

My thoughts EXACTLY :banghead:

Forget Top 10 - By the end of the summer we might be hoping for Top 20 - With Toronto and Gasted points to defend it's not looking good unless he screws his head on fast.

Have no idea what happened in today's match but pretty poor showing for the "#1" French player. Yes it was a change in surface but Clement had to adapt to that as well. I wish I had enough confidence in him to think that he will really be determined to show that he is the best in France and beat Mahut or Clement in R2 (if he makes it there) but it doesn't look promising.

Prove me wrong Richie and play like we all know you can....

I don't think Richard ticks like that, I am rather convinced that asserting his position as French Number 1 by playing another Frenchman does NOT give him extra motivation. Quite the contrary. :p Besides, deep down, he knows he is far away of the bunch, even if results don't [always] prove it.

Yes it was a change in surface but Clement had to adapt to that as well.

Richard with all his adaptability and inspite of his all-court game, seems rather structural to me. He was supposed to play on grass, it was indoors hard, not what he had prepared for, he just lacked the routine [and the will] to change.

Richard was interviewed by radio Europe1 yesterday.

The journalist asked him how does he feels in his head.. Richard replied that he really feels like playing tennis, his head is fine,... his tennis not so well but he will do his best for wimbledon (he said this sentence about 3/4 times within the 5 minutes interview  )
About the match against Clement: Arnaud was better on the crucial points, changing of surface was a bit difficult... So, he's not at the best of his confidence he feels "average" but will try to slacken to make a good result at wimbledon.
About the draw, he hopes to win the first round and then.. against Clément or Mahut, it will be very difficult, but he will still be the favorite.
The funny part was when the journalist talked about Mahut's run at the Queens... Richard answered that Nico is a great player and deserves it, and he hopes to meet him in Wimb... The journalist: "So, you prefer to play him than Clément in the second round?" And Richard said "oh wait, I forgot he is playing Arnaud in the first :o ... Que le meilleur gagne. (= may the better wins ???)."
About the pressure at Roland Garros he said the expectations are less important in Wimb, so he hopes to do well and really wants to enter the top 10.

1) this is true but I am hoping it will not be the case and I was just thinking ahead! :p
2) yeah, maybe, my brother and I were discussing it earlier and think it could be, especially if it's against Mahut since he got to the final of Queens so some british people might know who he is! :o although he is on court 14 :tape: tomorrow so I'm not holding out too much hope! ;)
3) this is also true but this would mean that there will be rain delays which I do not want! :p
