Following last night's postponement due to adverse weather conditions, in the match that took place today in order to complete the first round Pete Sampras appeared to be in excellent shape and prevailed over Jim Courier, 6-2, 6-4.

Exploiting his compatriot's unforced error, 'Pistol Pete' immediately broke the game on his 37-year-old opponent's serve, only to go on and 'trap' him between his exquisite technique and endless 'arsenal' of variability in his play. The world tennis 'King Midas' used a series of drop shots and unfathomable shots, taking an early lead (0-4) and exciting the crowd.

Courier began to gradually improve his performance and with consecutive aces closed the gap to 2-5; nevertheless, Sampras was the uncontested master of the first set and hit an ace for the score to read 6-2 (1-0 sets) after 18 minutes into the match.

In the second set, Courier noticeably reduced his errors and seemed capable of claiming victory, since Sampras was unable to find solutions to his opponent's powerful serves. It was not by a sheer stroke of luck, though, that the 36-year-old American had come to conquer 14 Grand Slam titles. Far from it! With an exceptional backhand, indicating his class, he broke the game on the 'jockey-cap bomber's' serve for 3-4, and victory was only a matter of time from there on. Courier, realizing that the leeway for a comeback was getting too close for comfort, sought the help of a ball-boy, which forced Sampras to recruit a ball-boy of his own. With the fans cheering the future tennis stars, Sampras took back the reigns, and hit for 4-6 and 0-2 sets.

Hmmmm I think he might lose to martin cos this court is very fast i mean pete had trouble breaking couriers serve in the second set as it says here, plus he had trouble against PAT CASH's serve, and Martin is in the best form of any of the guys plus he serve volleys and has a bigger serve than any of those guys and pete still barely won against him. Good luck pete please try ur best

Rain delays Sampras' first match in his ancestral homeland

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Like so many times at Wimbledon, Pete Sampras was rained out Saturday.

The tennis great, making his first visit to his ancestral homeland, was forced to wait another day before playing former Davis Cup teammate Jim Courier in the Champions Cup seniors tournament.

Sampras most likely will advance to the final against Todd Martin. Sampras won his first two matches against Wayne Ferreira and Pat Cash.

Sampras is undefeated in his seniors tour debut. He retired from the ATP Tour after winning his 14th major, the 2002 U.S. Open.

Magnus Larsson beat Richard Krajicek 6-3, 7-5. The Swede secured the runner-up spot in Group B and will play Ferreira in the third-place match Sunday. Ferreira defeated Cash 6-2, 6-1 to take second place in Group A.

Martin beat doubles specialist Anders Jarryd 8-6 in a match shortened to one set because of rain. Martin, who topped Group B with a 3-0 record, already was guaranteed a spot in the final. Jarryd had no chance of advancing after losing his first two matches.
