The difference between federer of recent and past is the BP conversion rate, his bp rate is shocking.TBH this has always been a problem, even when he was at his absolute best.

It's his forehand that is rather mediocre, and doesn't dominate play anymore, and that when it actually lands in.

If you haven't noticed yet, there have been significant changes in his game since AO 2007, his decline has been rather steep.

Watch some of his older matches and see how every ball to his FH is punished, players would avoid it at any cost.

Beto Martin's FH sucks, it's not mediocre.

First off, the mixture of his dip in form and players rising up to the task have made federer lose, people are player better against him, he will get his form back whether it is in the grass season, north american hard or even 2008, he will recapture his form. He is still the best player in the world, but of course if this dip in form continues, he will not be no.1 at the end of the year. Unless Nadal really cocks up.

Alberto Martin is a solid claycourter over the years, as you know clay courts require a player to have good, consistent groundstroke skills, therefore I have no idea how you can say that he has bad forehand.

Roger played on a much higher level at the Australian Open. His level of play has declined immensly since then. He still won the tourney at Dubai, but his level of play wasn't that convincing either (but still much better than now). Especially his forehand and also his return have suffered big time. He still hits amazing shots from time to time, but you can't deny the fact that he very often misses his forehand by miles. He also has problems to break players with weak serves, e.g. Monaco and Ferrer. When he was at his peak, he broke the serve of his opponents at will.

The point I am trying to make is that a forehand cannot go from the best in the world to mediocre in less than 6 months, especially when you win a slam at the start of the year and a couple of masters series and a slam shortly before that. He is simply in a dip of form and players have rose to the challenge more, therefore he has a lack of confidence about him.

Change of racket after AO
I had no idea that he changed rackets after AO. That could easily be a significant part of the explanation.

Never change a winning formula! Sampras knew that, although I'd argue that Sampras infact SHOULD have changed to a modern racket when his game started declining in the late 90's.

If you believe it or not, this can go faster than you think. Just take a look at guys like Ferrero and Roddick. Both of them had huge forehands in 2003 and 2004 and both suddenly lost it. I think many people thought that it had to do with confidence, especially in Andy's case. He has been working with Connors for 9 months now and he's full of confidence, but his forehand is still as weak as 2 years ago. Nothing has changed in that departement.

those guys are not roger federer and were not dominant player like roger, so when he breaks sampras record of 14 slams you will still say to me he has mediocre forehand? :haha:

Three words:

Juan.
Carlos.
Ferrero.

haha he never had the best forehand in the world by any means, even federers forehand was better then, roddicks was bigger, Agassi won a slam in 2003 and re captured no.1 spot, he also had a bigger forehand. Moya was still playing very well then, you are talking garbage if you say he had the biggest forehand. and those are not words, they are names.

Roddick had a very good forehad back then, and it has just stayed at the same level. Roddick was playing well all of 03 and 04, so that is not less than 6 months, buddy. Those are not words, they are names, and these guys are not the greatest of all time, are they? Roger is. I rest my case.

Roddick's forehand was the best in the world. I agree that others have got better but Roddick's has got considerably worse, if you watch his matches from 2003 he used to hit his forehand a ton, he hits with more spin and less accuracy now.

I think you didn't get what I was trying to say. A player doesn't have to be as dominant as Roger Federer to have a huge shot. Guys like Ferrero and Roddick had huge forehands, but both lost it and never got it back. Roger had a huge forehand in the last few years, but the level of his forehand has declined big time in the past 5 months. There's no point in denying it.

Byrd
05-19-2007, 01:02 PM
Yea you've also got to take roddicks serve into consideration as well as it used to set the point up for him more often than not, but more players can now read it, so his forehand doesn't even get into play during the beginning of the point=longer rallies=most decent baseliners>roddick.

Its either one or the other which frustrates fed, when his baseline game is on his serve is usually mediocre or poor, and when his baseline is off (today) his serve is on, one compensates for the other. He needs both working though at the same time.
