It's love-all for happy couple

Published on April 21, 2007

Starting from their first meeting when she gave him a peck on the cheek on court at the Thailand Open last year, Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova and tennis ace Paradorn Srichaphan have developed a special relationship.

Now they are set to announce their engagement at Bangkok's Sukhothai Hotel at 10.30am on Tuesday.

A source said the couple had already become engaged and wanted to inform the public about their good news.

A good friend of Glebova told The Nation that the Canadian beauty was not only wearing an engagement ring but also confirming to friends that it was an engagement ring.

Rumours about the engagement have circulated around town since Thursday. However, Thailand's top tennis player denied it at first, saying, "I really have no idea about it. From which source did it come?"

But after having a conversation with his father Chanachai yesterday, Paradorn no longer dismissed the news but remained tight-lipped.

"I won't give an interview to any media until Tuesday. You will hear and see things at the hotel," Paradorn said in a telephone interview with The Nation.

Chanachai said he had no intention of making a public announcement about the engagement because he preferred it to be within the two households. He said Glebova's parents would attend the event and refused to disclose details about any dowry.

The very first time the public saw the two together was last year when she kissed Paradorn as a reward for beating Tim Henman in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open, which she attended as Singha's brand ambassador.

They later met more often as the tennis player is also a brand ambassador for the brewery. Since then, they have been seen together more frequently.

In February, they admitted they were "special" friends. The Srichaphans have given the beauty queen the Thai name Piangfah and the nickname Fah.

It is expected that the couple will tie the knot by the end of the year in one of the most celebrated weddings of 2007.

Yes, it seems Chanchai is over the moon. I just hope P. Ball will continue playing tennis. By the way, did you read the comments online to this news item, the link is above in my first post. I think some of the comments were downright rude and very uncharitable. I would say the were very un-Thai.

It is so true that you can't please everyone and I'm sure P'Ball has leanred that this sentence is a fact. :)

:o I guess some people can't seem to grow up. Of course, there are people who just can't be happy while others are  Honestly, I bet it's worse in the Thai forums at the moment  They just envy him, that's all.

What Paradorn says is absolutely true, it's so hard to be motivated all the time. After all tennis players are human also. Don't we also suffer the motivation problems in our work or studies? why should we expect them to be different?
As far as the eatery, it's a Thai street food place on the corner of Surawong and Patpong I think odette's uncle owns the French restaurant in Patpong, Le Bouchon. I eat there regularly and sometimes I see Odette coming in with some friends to eat

Paradorn and Natalie announced their engagemant at the swanky Sukkhothai Hotel to a packed crowd of reporters and celebrities. Here are two articles from the 2 English language dailies of Bangkok. It seems all Thai males are envious of paradorn. I gleaned this titbit from my friend Max, who admitted his own envy. According to Max, it's his dream to go out with a Farang girl. This I cannot understand because I personally find Thai girls very attractive. But to each his own as they say. Anyway, I am very happy for P. Ball and Fah.

A kiss is not just a kiss . . .

Some prejudiced minds may say, enviously, that Paradorn-Natalie is not a perfect match. Well, that may be debatable but it certainly is not an exaggeration to say that this is the hottest couple of the moment.

Video clip of Paradon-Natalie's Engagement Ceremony (by Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong)

The chaotic scene at the press conference on Tuesday when Paradorn Srichaphan and Natalie Glebova announced their engagement was clearly evidence of overwhelming public attention lavished on this golden couple.

What more can you ask from a couple? Paradorn is Thailand's best-loved tennis star and Natalie the most beautiful woman in the universe.

Hundreds of reporters showed up at Sukhothai Hotel early morning on April 24 to reserve the best seats in the conference room before the scheduled announcement time of 10:29. Then the romantic event turned into a small riot scene when the couple showed up.

Photographers jostled to reach the two stars while journalists yelled at them for blocking their view.

Finally, love conquered all. The photographers agreed to sit down and let the press conference begin.

Paradorn showed up in an elegant jacket. He is miles away from "The Beast". (A mean Thai reporter asked him earlier if his marriage was like Beauty and the Beast.)

Now, before we describe Natalie's radiant looks, we would like to ask our readers to recall the song "She" by Elvis Costello to build up the mood: "She may be the face I can't forget/The trace of pleasure or regret. . . "

Dark-haired Natalie was dazzling in her strapless short yellow dress. The audience was mesmerised by her glittering green eyes.

We would be lying to you if we didn't confess that at that moment, we were also wondering if Paradorn really deserves this surreal beauty queen. Sigh . . .

A MC entered on stage to make an introductory speech. But the reporters could wait no longer. Some yelled, "Cut the crap and kick off the event now!"

Then the couple told the crowd that they became engaged on Songkran night during a dinner in Bali. Paradorn said he got down on his knees when he asked for Natalie's hand. In return, Natalie responded with no hesitation: "Yes, yes, yes, yes!"

Ooops, have we mentioned that the rock is 3-karats, valued at Bt3 million?

The biggest surprise was not the engagement announcement. It was the surprise gift from Paradorn's parents to their future daughter-in-law consisting of 16-karat diamond earrings and necklace, engraved "Natalie" and worth an estimated Bt16 million.

Paradorn said they planned to tie the knot in November or December. The wedding ceremony will be designed according to traditional Thai style. After the marriage, Miss Universe 2005 will be renamed Natalie Glebova Srichaphan.

Then the eager reporters exploded with a tornado of questions. The smiling couple tried to answer every one of them.

Natalie thanked Paradorn's parents for giving her a Thai name: "Piang Fah" or "High as the Sky"

"The feeling straight from my heart is that, yes, I will spend the rest of my life and build my family with this person," she said. "He's very compassionate to other people and open to them. He helps other people. That's why I love him."

"It's once in a lifetime that a man has to decide to settle down and have a family and I have only one chance to do this," Paradon said. "Natalie is definitely going to be a daughter-in-law for the Thai people."

"Ever since we met I knew that he was a down-to-earth, humble person," said Natalie, adding in Thai: "Fah rak phi Ball," or "I love brother Ball."

Throughout the press event, Natalie did have something to worry about: tugging up her bodice to keep herself contained.

The celebrity couple acknowledged that they became "special friends" in February after Glebova publicly rewarded Paradorn with a kiss for beating Tim Henman in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open last year.

Paradorn and Natalie to marry

Tennis ace Paradorn Srichaphan and Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova officially announced their engagement yesterday, following months of romance. Paradorn, in a brown-grey suit, and Natalie, in a short yellow dress, greeted an army of reporters in a Bangkok hotel hall that had been adorned with roses, lotuses and dork rak, or love flowers.

They agreed that their romance had blossomed to the point where they should take their relationship to a new height.

Paradorn, 28, who has dropped to 83rd in the rankings from ninth place at the pinnacle of his career, and Natalie, 25, a Canadian of Russian descent, plan to wed in November or December.

Paradorn said he slipped an engagement ring on the finger of Natalie, who was crowned Miss Universe in Bangkok two years ago, when they were on holiday in Bali on April 13.

''The atmosphere was very romantic when we dined. I told her to go to her room first as I wanted to take a stroll,'' Paradorn said.

''I got down on my knees and asked her to marry me and she replied 'yes' four times, repeatedly,'' he said.

Eight months of dating was not too short a time for the couple to get to know each other, he said.

The two celebrities first met when they visited HIV/Aids sufferers at Wat Phrabat Namphu in Lop Buri late last year.

Visibly overwhelmed with emotion, the beauty queen, who carries the Thai nickname Piang Fa (Angel-Like), thanked people for supporting her and said she had total faith in her husband-to-be.

''From the moment we first met I knew that he was a down-to-earth, humble person,'' she said, adding ''Chan rak phi Bon'', or ''I love brother Ball.'' Bon, the Thai rendition of the English word ball, is Paradorn's nickname.

In return, Paradorn said ''I love you'' to her in Russian.

Natalie's parents flew in to be by their daughter's side yesterday.

Paradorn's father, Thanachai, gave Natalie a 16-carat diamond necklace and a set of earrings.

Paradorn helped her to put them on before kissing her twice.

no problem. You forget Paradorn has a string of sponsorships and endorsements from Thai and foreign companies and they make him most of his money. This is true of all tennis players who break through the top 100, especially if they become national icons as Paradon is in Thailamd.

Love knows no boundary or nationality. In fact Paradorn, has always gone out with women who were half farang (thai word for people of European ancestery it covers americans, australians, south africans, latin americans, new zealanders etc) His previous girl friends , Tata Young, half American and Odette Henriette Jacqmin, half French so, now he has gone one step further and got engaged with someone with 100% European ancestry, or, it seems. For me, I applaud people who have multi ethnic, multi cultural relationships at least that helps bring about a positive understanding and celebrates human diversity. I hope they will have a good life and prove prejudiced people of whatever nationality wrong.

I did not know that about Paradorn... thanks for sharing

plus Glebova originally is from Russia, and Russian women are razed to cherish their families. Usually, family is their first priority, so it should work out well for them. If he's well adjusted in Western culture and she's ok with his religion believes then they will be happy for a long time.
