Nadal: Berdych doesn't always say hello

Second-ranked Nadal will face Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in their first meeting since last October's Madrid Masters, when Berdych beat Nadal a third straight time and relations between them were strained by Berdych's reaction to the spectators.

As Berdych left the court to jeers, he angered the pro-Nadal crowd by putting his fingers to his lips in a silencing motion.

Nadal told Berdych he was "a bad person" for doing the gesture.

Asked if he and Nadal get on well together, Berdych said: "If we meet in the locker room or somewhere, we just say 'Hi.' That's all."

Nadal called the relationship "neither good or bad."

"When I see him, I say hello. Even though he doesn't always do that," Nadal said.

That is old news people.

Nadal needed five match points to defeat German qualifier Kohlschreiber for the second time this year. "On one hand, winning easily might not challenge you because you have no pressure," Nadal said. "But on the other hand it's good for the confidence. Tomorrow I have a very tough match."

Given his performance in his past two matches, my initial thought is no. But, "Dislike" is a powerful motivator, so Berdych may show up to play and surprise us. Personally, I think Berdych would be higher in the rankings if he looked upon each of his opponents as being Nadal on the other side of the net.

I think it's fair to say that each one wants to kick the other's ass:lol:

God- I am just ready for the match to be over at this point. This is reminding me of the Roger/Djokovic stuff last year. ;) At this point, since he is sounding like his feelings are hurt (hee!) it would be rather humorous if Rafa did a "shun....unshun" to Tomas in the locker room like Dwight in The Office. (Sorry for those who don't get the reference.)

I do think it could be safely asserted that neither player is the other's favorite. But I don't think there is any type of hatred a'la John and Jimmy back in the day.

Hilarious. :haha:

Well, in the other thread I voted for a Berdych win in straight sets. I'd just like to see the reactions on both sides if the match ended like that. Nadals "friend" would be the perfect choice to end his clay streak. It's not that I have anything in particular against Nadal. Just my sadistic nature. ;)
Of course a Nadal win would also work very well to keep the rivalry alive.

scoobs

I gather there was a bit of tension at the time, directed at Gilbert, which Roddick took out on Murray (not to mention the sting of 2 defeats) - Roddick does sometimes like to intimidate lower-ranked opponents when he's fired up. I think that stage has passed with Murray though and now he just finds his game a challenge.

Roddick was hurting a lot after that Wimby match...he was probably trying to "scare" Murray a little...I'll bet he really really wanted revenge ;)

Besides, you only need to think back to Aus Open 2007 and Tsonga...his behaviour there was apparently awful and it is no coincidence that he was it occurred when he was under huge pressure.

Well this is fodder for another thread, but there are surely other bigger matches he has wanted to win (like slam finals, or slam semis) after which he has not brought out the F bombs on the winner, in a subsequent match. So hurting would not really be the only explanation. But you're right, intimidation of a young kid is probably part of the explanation.

Back to grudges, who else?

we all know how he handled the situation after tht , for those who dont ,he cried after the match against gonzo in the semi due to tht reception from the crowd .

Rafa's presser in full. Translated from Spanish, for sure.
MASTERS SERIES MONTE-CARLO

April 20, 2007

Rafael Nadal

MONTE-CARLO, MONACO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Can you talk about this match?
RAFAEL NADAL: I played well. I played a complete match. I kept focused all the time. He was attacking a lot but it was not important because I came up winning.

Q. Aren't you afraid that you were not challenged enough winning in straight sense until now? Is it going to be a problem for the next matches?
RAFAEL NADAL: I know tomorrow I have a very tough match. Winning easily is good because it gives you confidence in your game. Even though you cannot get used to the pressure.

Q. You lost three times against Berdych, but this time it's going to be on clay. This time will it be different?
RAFAEL NADAL: I hope so. We'll see tomorrow, but it's going to be very difficult. He won the last three times. He's a very strong player. He attacks a lot. I will try to be aggressive also in order to bother him.

Q. Is there something in his game that bothers you?
RAFAEL NADAL: It's obvious. Although the first match I had a matchpoint, the second match I had a set point, and the third match I lost in three sets.
It's good for his confidence, but my confidence comes from the facts that I am another time in the semifinals in Monte Carlo for my third year here, and I won the last two times.
This is on clay, my best surface, but I'm aware it's going to be difficult tomorrow.

Q. How is your relationship with him now?
RAFAEL NADAL: It's neither good nor bad. There's no relationship at all. There's no problem for me to say hello when I see him, and he doesn't always do that himself.
These kind of things happen on the court sometimes. But it was in Madrid. I'm someone who admits his errors, but he has to admit also that his gesture at the end of match is not the kind of thing you do.
Still, anyone does what he wants, and personally I regret what I said after the match. I won't think about all that tomorrow. It'll just be a semifinal in Monte Carlo, a difficult opponent, a great player.

Q. Are you already starting to think about a possible final against Federer?
RAFAEL NADAL: It would be stupid of me to think about that at this stage given my very tough opponent tomorrow against whom I lost three times. It's going to be a difficult match. I'm thinking about that match first and trying to do my best.
And also Federer has a tough match against Ferrer* who's playing well at this moment.

Q. We know all the players are supporting Monte Carlo as a Masters Series. Does that mean you don't want Shanghai to become a Masters Series?
RAFAEL NADAL: There's a complete error of concept in that. We just don't want Monte Carlo to be downgrade, but this has nothing to do with Shanghai. If Shanghai becomes a Masters Series we'll all be very pleased. It's just that we want to protect Monte Carlo because of its long history and because the players enjoy that tournament a lot.
* Ferrero, of course.

wow, poor Rafa

I have no idea what kind of person Berdych is but his on-court bahaviour is perfect compared to Nadal's with all his pumped fists, kicks and jumps and other tricks. Has he ever thought how irritating they must be to his opponents? And after personally attacking Tomas in Madrid what else does he expect? Has he ever heard of the Newton's third law or of "whatever a man sows, that he will also reap"? :wavey:

Rafa should really give all of his interview in Spanish, so much better, for him and for us. I'm just happy to hear something more profound from him that 'difficult match tomorrow, no?'

I liked this line a lot

"Still anyone does what he wants, and personally I regret what I said after the match. I won't think about all that tomorrow. It'll just be a semifinal in Monte Carlo, a difficult opponent, a great player"

Nice words, still I hope for drama, slow play warnings, Berdych taking at least a set, nervous Rafa...lots of vamos,

I like a bit of bad blood between players

Like Lendl and McEnroe.

I was tempted to start a thread with the title:

Tomas: "Nadal does not want to practice with me any more "

but we have enough stupid threads as it is, so I thought I'd include it here.

Q. When you need to practice and you want to find a partner to hit some balls you ask any player, or you have somebody you like better to play with? And would you ask Nadal one day, or you prefer not?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Before the accident in Madrid we been practicing sometimes. . But since that time, yeah, of course, then it was just one tournament in Paris and then, yeah, Masters Series.
So and until now, no. But maybe it's going to take some time and then I think that's going to be fine. But before it was no problem and we practice. :sobbing:

His english is no better than Nadal's spanglish. I still think that they had a girlfriend issue long time ago. To much drama between them.

Edit: Or boyfriend? :aplot:
