I started watching at *3-4, Federer serving. From that point it was all Federer, but I can't say what t was like up to then. :)

YES!!! That's more like it, Rogi! :hatoff:

First set still rusty - why allow all those rebreaks??? :( - but second set was pure gallery play like we'd want to see from Feds. :worship:

I'm almost starting to feel confident. ;)

What a performance from Federer!

It should have been 6-1 6-0, as he broke Ferrer three times in the first set but had a few off-games on his serve

His backhand imporoved IMMENSELY

I thought Ferrer was extremely disappointing - he was very strong in the first set and kept it competitive until the end, and forced Federer to play very well to take that set. He was shaky at the start of the second, and once he went a break down he mentally just went off to the beach and didn't fight it at all.

This eerily reminds me of the Roddick-Federer SF in Melbourne. Except we didn't have to go through the agony of a third set.

So, up next for Federer. Will it be the exhausted, sub-par Gasquet, or just plain old sub-par Ferrero. Man, this draw is easy. :o

EDIT: except for the final

Why doesn't MC keep match result details? I'm curious to know what Fed's winner/UE ratio was; bwin stopped broadcasting too early. GrrrAccording to atpmastersseries.tv Federer had 26 total winners and 16 UEs - an equal number from both FH and BH sides. Ferrer only won 29% of first serve points.

Congrats to Roger.

More than anything it's a mental thing with Ferrer against Roger. Ferrer is capable of way more than what he brought to the court today. Granted he doesn't have any real big weapons to bother Federer but he's a fighter and that's where his strength is. But you can see from minute one that David doesn't think he's even worthy enough to be on the same court as Fed. Damn it David you are one of the best on clay, believe a little.

Oh and work on your serve, PLEASE!!!!

NYCtennisfan
04-20-2007, 01:00 PM
If Federer doesn't misfire against Ferrer, there is no way Ferrer can ever trouble him in any way, shape or form. Federer's BH has always been OK even in his losses but today it was a real weapon while his FH had a lot more bite to it.

Federer back to his good old self  Then again he is always confident when he plays against one of his pigeons. The road to the final is open now and, who knows, he might get lucky if the stars align for Berdych tomorrow .

I'm guessing that you're insulting him back for the same reason?

Besides, what's wrong with "federers career is not even halfway stupid".
English is not my first language so feel free to correct me but isn't that like saying "Federer's career is not halfway bad"? How is that an insult to anybody?

I can't say that this straight sets victory came as a surprise. Too bad for Ferrer for not having been able to make it a tougher match.

I and probably everybody else read his comment to mean, "Federer's career is not halfway over yet, STUPID." The context of the rest of his comment gives this way starting with the PFFFFFT! That's why it got the reaction methinks. :)

I don't there is much of a chance that that is NOT what he meant and your English is more than good enough to see this. ;)

Most of the other wars involve some kind of feud i.e. Fed vs. Nadal, Nadal hating, Fed hating, Roddick hating, young gun hating, clay hating, grass hating, Croat hating, whatever hating. This particular comment seemed to come out of the blue. Doesn't make it worse, it was just strange to see.

Not too shabby- Ferrer is a very competent clay courter this goes down as a pretty good win. Hopefully Roger is back in full flow after the earlier 'rusty' performances. It may not be enough to win this tournament but at least it is slightly better and better with every match.

Honestly, I had my doubts the first time but I tend to agree with your interpretation now that I've reread it.:)

I read English stuff regularly but it's still a foreign language to me and it's easier to get the correct meaning of things when the punctuation is done well (which is no offence to the non-native speakers since I make my share of mistakes).
I mean, I wouldn't have doubted the context if he had written:
"federers career is not even halfway, stupid".

There was no comma so I didn't even realize that 'stupid' was pointing at me. Only NYC's reply made me realize that it was the case. At any rate, I don't find it insulting at all, my older brother used to throw similar words at me when we were kids so I grew used to it. And even more importantly, I know I'm not stupid, so when someone says that, they are either wrong or they don't even mean it, but just use it as a random word instead of some 'nicer' way to address people. So I don't mind it one bit.

My motto is: it's better to call someone stupid than to shoot them with a gun.

BTW, so does anyone have the 500-club list? Voo de Mar, perhaps?

I was actually impressed with the way Rog started off the match. Very focused and well-prepared, came out firing shots left and right. He lost a bit of his edge though, and those re-breaks were completely unnecessary. The second set he just switched into a higher gear, stellar performance, especially off the backhand side. Overall, a job very well done, and if he continues to play that well till the end, who's to say he won't win his first AMS title of the season?

I'm still worried about his serve. He seems to get broken easily at times, especially after breaking his opponent's serve. He needs to confirm those breaks by holding serve and not let his rival get into the match again.

Still a very solid display. He had a better winners UEs ratio than last match.

Isn't it the case, though, that service breaks are much more frequent on clay because the serve isn't such a weapon on that surface? Even Nadal got broken twice by that Vliegen chap (the only two games the poor guy won). I agree that it's worrying on other surfaces, but I don't think it's such a big deal on clay.

Good stuff by Federer--he's improved by leaps and bounds since the first round but I'm afraid that it's still not enough to match Rafa's level of play at the moment.

Ferrer shit himself when he realized he could play with Roger and from then on, Roger gagged and dominated him.

well, I thought a the beginning of the tournament that Rafa was gonna win this unless he is not at his best, but even at his best I really see Fed beating him right now, the way he played today was really great, his s/v is perfect and his backhand is his strongest weapon this weak, and he seems to have his forehand back as well. We should have a great final!

I find it ironic that Ferrer has done better against Federer on faster surfaces.
