Is Federer mentally ready for the long clay court season?

His first match was very shaky. He obviously doesn't come in with a lot of confidence. Nadal is his usual pumped up self. And Djokovic looms in Fed's quarter in the first clay tournament for both of them.. Are we in for 2 very unpredictable months for Fed?

It was just his first clay court match in 10 months. Of course he will be shaky. I think he will be just fine and do well this season.

Roger has already spent 3 years as no. 1.....won 10 GS titles....what more do you want?? It is not realistic to expect him to continue at this high level without an occasional drop. Plus, this was his first match on clay in months.

Federer always starts his tournaments weaker than he finishes them. And as others mentioned, this is his first clay tournament in quite a while, give the man som time to adjust.

I'll admit he looked shaky and bad, but this is a bit much, I'd say. I'm sure he can handle playing on the clay.

Come on people, it was a match against Seppi, Federer could play his 40% and take it. No question about that

I think Roger needs one brilliant match, and then we'll see him back to his old self. He just gotta find that missing forehand.

His match against Djoko would give much better indication as to where he is mentally right now.

I think he's more ready than Nadal, although the score didn't show it up, I would be more surprise to see Fed lose in the next round or 2 than if Nadal would lose! I know that this is clay, but Nadal has never had such a slump, he did win a title but then lost the week after to the same guy he had just beaten! and it was a good victory by Nole, Nadal couldn't beat him in that match!

Are people here ready to stop panicking every time Fed has a tough match?

The only one that has taken a swipe at Fed's mental state is Vince Spadea, and well...that kind of says it all. Fed is one tough dude, he'll be just fine. :)

I'd give Seppi some credit for his match as well, I've not seen him play that good before.

Nah, I think he'll do fine. I remember last year, he had quite a few shaky matches in Eastbourne but went on to win it and later repeat at Wimbledon.

You mean Halle, remember this is the ATP Eastbourne is the Wta.;)

He too played some shaky matches in Dubai and Miami actually he was pretty pushed at the Miami final by Ivan. He rarely plays subime matches early on. In fact he played very few matches where he was playing superbly even last year. Those did not really arrive until the latter stages quarters and on at the US open and during Madrid and the semis and finals of the masters cup.
