Marcos Baghdatis, an Australian Open finalist in 2006 and a former top 10 tennis player in the world, is joining next February's 32-player field at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships at The Racquet Club.
Baghdatis has accepted a wild card into the newly designated, upgraded '500' Series event on the ATP Tour. He'll join a field that includes two top 10 players -- No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro and No. 10 James Blake -- and former top 10s Tommy Haas, a three-time Memphis champion, and Lleyton Hewitt, a former world No. 1.
Baghdatis, 23, a charismatic player from Cyprus known for his powerful forehand and high-risk shotmaking, reached the 2006 Australian Open final with wins over third seed Andy Roddick and fourth seed David Nalbandian. He was a Wimbledon semifinalist a few months later, beating Andy Murray and Hewitt before being ousted by Rafael Nadal.
Injuries have slowed Baghdatis in recent years, including ankle problems in 2008 that forced him to miss numerous ATP Tour events. As a result Baghdatis, who will be making his first trip to Memphis, has seen his ranking dip to 98th.
