When was the last time a singles title contender played also doubles in a slam?

On women's side singles title contenders play also doubles. There can be two reasons why men's singles title contenders don't play doubles. Men's singles' Bo5 matches are more exhausting than women's Bo3, that's why men's singles title contenders don't want to get tired. Also there are obviously more doubles specialists in men's than women's doubles. But when was the last time a realistic singles slam title contender played also doubles? Kafelnikov seems to be the last player who won both singles and doubles in the same event, RG '96. After that I know that Rafter won AO doubles in '99, while beong also a singles title contender. But has there been any realistic singles title contenders in slam doubles after that?

If you mean just entered the doubles draw, then it would be quite a few times. Out of the top of head, Federer played AO 04 doubles(His last doubles slam).

But if consider being a contender in both Singles and Doubles, I think there would be none in the last 10 years

I meant roughly a singles top 10 player, one who has a good chance at least to get in SF, maybe even further. In doubles his chances maybe aren't that good, yet he doesn't play doubles only to tank.

Anyway, I noticed one '00s potential SFist played often doubles, Ljubicic.

Re: When was the last time a singles title contender played also doubles in a slam?

J.Björkman won RG 2006 in doubles and reached singles SF in Wimbledon just weeks later (lost vs Federer). But I don't think anyone viewed him as a "contender" coming into Wimbledon even if Bjorkman ofc was a career high nr4 in singles. But by then he was 34 and mostly focused on doubles, where he won 9 slams.

J.Melzer is another one that comes to mind in recent years. He made SF in RG 2010 in singles and won Wimbledon 2010 in doubles. I don't think anyone viewed Melzer as a singles contender in RG though, just became that way.

Doing it in the very same slam? I can't think of any recent example. Still think what Bjorkman and Melzer did are very impressive considering RG and Wimbledon are so close in the calendar and it shows you can go for both singles and doubles in the same season if you got the talent for it.

Re: When was the last time a singles title contender played also doubles in a slam?

The Best case of recent times is Melzer. He was ranked in top 10 in both singles and doubles for a couple of weeks early last year. He was the first one to do this post 2000. Kafelnikov and Bjorkman have both done it. Not sure about Rafter, but he would be close for sure.

If you broaden the discussion to include players who regularly play both singles and doubles in slams(in recent years), the following come to mind: Melzer, Petzschner, Llodra, Robredo, to a certain extent Gonzalez.

And of course, many top players play doubles in smaller tournaments(MS included)

As I said, last time was Kafelnikov @ RG '96. Last times in other slams (unless I'm mistaken) have been Edberg @ AO '87, Stich @ Wim '91, and McEnroe @ USO '81. (did that also in USO '79 and Wim '81, '83, and '84)

Anyway, I think doubles would be better if top 10 played doubles more often. They don't do it in slams because they concentrate on singles, but the two-week format of Indian Wells allows them to play doubles there. Of course Miami has the same format, top 10 don't usually play doubles there. And look at the recent IW and Miami finalists, doubles specialists haven't celebrated in IW as often as in Miami. Actually, because slam doubles don't have the best possible field, I think winning Olympic doubles (or maybe even IW doubles) is more difficult than winning slam doubles, Olympics definitely have the best field in doubles.

Re: When was the last time a singles title contender played also doubles in a slam?

Yes, he is the last GS singles champ who has won at least 1 doubles title; Kafelnikov is the last GS doubles champ (RG 2002) who won at least 1 singles title. It's far worse in mixed doubles, the last man to win GS mixed who won at least 1 singles title is J. Mac at 1977 RG (if I didnt overlook something), for women it's Samantha Stosur and her win at 2008 Wimby.

Thx, I know

But Lleyton stopped playing GS doubles once he started to succeed in singles.
