Re: Viktor Trociki 2011 Season
Troicki Holds Off Gasquet
Fourth seed Viktor Troicki reached the semi-finals at the Medibank International Sydney for the first time Thursday as he cruised past fifth seed and 2010 runner-up Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4 at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament. The victory earned the 24-year-old Troicki his 100th tour-level match win.
World No. 30 Troicki, who clinched victory for Serbia over France in the Davis Cup final in December, was pinned back by Gasquet when leading by a set and a break. However, he swiftly recovered to break the Frenchman again and seal victory in 77 minutes.
“I thought I had the match under control,” reflected Troicki on the difficult finish to the match. “He just started playing better than he did in the beginning. He was raising his game and started playing some really great shots. I realised that I had to also raise my game and try to overpower him. Luckily I did a good job, and at the end I broke him and served it out. So it was a tough one.”
For a place in his fourth ATP World Tour final, Troicki will face German Florian Mayer, who dismissed Italy’s Potito Starace 6-4, 6-1 in 65 minutes. In a match featuring seven breaks of serve, Mayer converted five of six break point opportunities and won 77 per cent of points behind his first serve.
