Re: Kei Nishikori

K. Nishikori - June 23

Monday, 23 June 2008

Marc Gicquel def. Kei Nishikori 4-6, 7-5 (retired)

Q. You must be very disappointed. Can you explain the problems that you were experiencing with your abdomen and why you chose to retire when you did.

KEI NISHIKORI: Uhm, it started last week when I was playing Nottingham and I retired, too. And this couple days was okay, almost no pain, and start hurting during the first set. Last couple games, I couldn't hit serve. It was hurting so much. So much painful.

It's big tournament, but still I have tournament next I mean, after two weeks, so...

Q. Obviously, you're the youngest here. How disappointing was it for you having to pull out of this big moment for you in your career?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, it was I was exciting. It was my first Grand Slam. And, yeah, I'm so disappointed.

Q. Is it a long term problem? When do you expect to be back?

KEI NISHIKORI: This injury?

Q. Yes.

KEI NISHIKORI: I hope, I don't know, one or two weeks.

Q. What were your expectations coming into the tournament?

KEI NISHIKORI: What do you mean?

Q. What did you expect? How did you expect to play coming into the tournament?

KEI NISHIKORI: Uhm, I thought I could play like normal. But start hurting during the set. I wanted to play Roger Federer, but, yeah, maybe next time.

Re: Kei Nishikori

Thanx for posting the interview, esther.

Poor Kei. He sounds so disappointed.
According to the Japanese press, his abdominal injury is something he's been having on and off since junior days. He generates so much power off both wings despite being slightly built, so maybe this kind of injuries may be unavoidable until his body becomes stronger. Apparently, this time the injury was diagnosed as that he would need three weeks to recover, so he may have to pull out from New Port. But I hope he won't rush and spend enough time resting so that the injury won't be a really chronic one.

Roger Federer def. Robin Soderling 6‑3, 6‑4, 7‑6

Q. Do you remember Nishikori, the Japanese tennis player? He had a Grand Slam debut this Wimbledon. Could you tell us your impression of his performance this year.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I practiced with him in Miami last year for quite a few times. I was very impressed how well he hit the ball. I could tell right away that he will be a good player.

I mean, in a way, surprising that he right away won Delray Beach. But I think we'll see much, much more of Kei in the future. He's a nice guy, as well. It's good to see a player from Japan also making his move.

Re: Kei Nishikori

Thanx for he links, kinokino!
Nice to see pics of Kei on court again!

He pulled out from the qualies for Toronto next week. He's still on the entry list for the qualies the week after in Cincy though. If he misses that as well, then his come back will be in Beijing. I presume he and his team are being cautious about when he should return on tour, which I think is a good thing.

You mean the sports biography about Kei made by the public television organization, right?
It was a well-written documentary, and I really liked it

Re: Kei Nishikori

Yeah that program was quite good.
Kei's eyes look like his mum's. And I think he took after the way his dad speaks.
And little Kei was soooooo cute!

...

Btw, Kei withdrew from Cincy qualifying, so his next tournament will be the Beijing Olympics. His points from Indianapolis and L.A. will fall off the computer in the next two weeks, so his ranking may be hit a little. Hope he can recover them and add some more points in Beijing!

Also, Kei is on the 6th on the alternate list of the US Open main draw entry list. If there are six withdrawals before the qualies start, he can get direct entry. Sure I shouldn't wish for other players' withdrawals, but usually several players pull out for one reason or another, so I think he has a pretty good chance.
