Did you see his DC match on Friday? It was the best I've seen him play in a good while. He served great... +30 aces, and even saved 2 match points with aces. The big forehand was firing again, and his return game was miles better... even hitting backhand return winners. His confidence seemed much better than recently, so I think going back to his old racquet might have helped him. Gojowczyk played an unbelievable match, hitting forehands like Soderling. Jo was very unlucky to lose.
He's definitely not the worst returner in ATP right now. He's not even the worst returner in the top 12. If he can win today against Kamke, it could be a real turning point for him.
Yes, I watched it and wasn't impressed at all. Gojo is a challenger level player, one Jo would have definitely broken down if he had been more consistent from the back of the court or assertive when he took the initiative. In the end, Gojo was cramping and super tired and still Jo couldn't make enough returns or be consistent enough to get a break. And beating Kamke isn't a turning point, it's the very minimum that's required and no indication at all that Tsonga is ready to get back to top 10 level or anything.
The main problem for Jo, though not the only one, right now is that for the most part he does absolutely nothing with his second serve returns so his opponents are never under any sort of pressure on their service games. We'll see what happens on the clay, his erratic game off both wings will be badly exposed if he doesn't improve a lot. Hopefully France's win at least helps him with confidence.
