just read but I understand it's been public for a few days now, De Witt will be working with Petkovic, how is that going to work with Gilles?

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

It is like he deliberately picks the toughest tournaments. Brisbane is by far the strongest of the first week warm ups and he will be #15 in the world and seeded 5 #sigh

He is down to do Kooyong the week before the oz open again too.

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

It is like he hates me and his career. He has a horrible draw, Dimitrov up first then Troicki then Fed, urggghhh.

I know he has a good record against the first 2 but this is a 250 so drawing someone ranked 28 in your first round and first match of the year is annoying.

I pray he at least gets a good Oz open draw.

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

He lost his first round encounter vs Dimitrov, 6-3,7-6(12-10).
These terrible FH unforced errors and DFs on important points... and poor returning throughout the match too (often returning either too short or too long/out).
Said he has shoulder problems since Metz last year and that's the reason why he's serving average/poorly. Will take a "decision" after the Davis Cup in March (to stop for a moment or not).

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

Honestly, I don't think his draw matters really right now the way he is playing anyway. He could have the best possible draw and I wouldn't see him getting far considering his physical state right now and how it's affecting parts of his game, especially his serve. He lost again today in Kooyong to Pablo Carreno Busta. He's not won a match yet this season (0-3). He blew four straight match points against Lopez in his first match at Kooyong and a few set points against Dimitrov in the 2nd set tiebreak in Brisbane. He has a shoulder injury that's not improving that he says he's had since last September. He had a bag of ice on it immediately following his match with Dimtirov and that was his first match of the year.

Now he has an abdominal injury he says he got from when he worked on his serve on the off season and was trying to serve harder which ironically has him now just rolling his serve in with practically nothing on it. He was really grabbing at and massaging his abs on the left side during his match with Lopez. He said after the match that if the AO were tomorrow he wouldn't even be playing and will try to rest and get as close to 100% as he can by the start of the slam and yet he turns around and plays his final match at Kooyong today instead of withdrawing . Needless to say, he seems a mess and I have no real hope or expectations going into the AO. It may be a new year but it's the same old shit right now. Hope he gets better and fully healthy at some point so he can make some things happen for him again.

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

Difficult draw indeed. In his current physical state and confidence level in his game, he could very well struggle or even lose against a good version of Pospisil (who can serve well and hit his forehand well).
For this first round, he'll need to avoid those errors and serving better for sure.

Yeah, not expecting much here. I'm just hoping his body holds up and he can give 100%

Gilles' 1st match is tomorrow. Show Court 2 second match.

Allez Gilles.
(I've no expectation...well, in fact, I kinda expect him to lose. But I hope I'm wrong)

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

Does anyone have coverage? If so, how is he looking? No TV here in the US. The Aus Open site has 3 keys to the match for each player. Gilles has hit all three of his and Vasek has hit zero of his, yet they are tied. That's not good...

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

It's on ESPN3. I watched on and off. Pospisil is sorta injured middle of 2nd set. I really just sat down and watch the 4th set. Gilles is steady, handing Pospisil's serve very well, and making Pospisil out of position or rush, hasn't lost a serve eventhough he's just rolling them in. So good enough to win this match. Next is Donskoy. Will be tough. Good luck Gilles.

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

Gilles played pretty well all things considered with how he said he was feeling and the injuries he said he was struggling with coming into the AO. He's clearly still not putting much on his serve, but his ground strokes and movement seemed good. Pospisil was nott 100% so Gilles might have been getting away with more than he would've against someone else but it's hard to say. All and all I'm pretty pleased because he won and I honestly didn't know what to expect coming into the match and the results of the first set tiebreak made me think he was going to continue his losing ways so far this year but he came back strong. Winnable match against Donskoy next round.

Re: 2016 Season SCHEDULE and CHEERING Thread!

I think Gilles played well throughout. Vasek was pretty much serve botting the entire 1st set. Then his weird injury out of no where, and his serving suffered. But then he didn't seem that injured. Went back to serving and running around every BH like he usually does, but Gilles stayed the better player.

Nice road to R4 tbh. But one match at a time.
