Re: 2014, European Clay Season

So sad for Gilles , it was a great chance for his 1st QF in RG , it would have been without a doubt his best GS moment ever had he made the comeback from *3-5, he just lacks a Top-10 win this season, he came very close with Murray, Nadal and now Raonic.

Gilles Simon
Benoît Paire, Edouard Roger-Vasselin,Nicolas Mahut, Jeremy Chardy, Aljaz Bedene, Florian Mayer, Tommy Robredo, Evgeny Korolev, Albert Ramos, Guillaume Rufin

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

Gilles's playing London this week in double with Jarkko against Team Gulbis/Dolgo. Since he's not playing single, it's confirmed that he won't be seeded for Wimbledon, first time since 2008 .

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

Don't really understand why Gilles is even bothering with doubles. He's atrocious at it and more than likely won't even get past the first match so he won't be getting anything out of it as far as tuning up his game for grass before Wimbledon. There's only two grass events to use as practice before Wimbledon so why not make the most of it by playing both events in singles? Seems like poor schedule management to me. If you're not going to play singles here then why bother at all? Just rest up and practice on the practice courts.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

I'm not sure of the rationale, but it's worth to point out that he did the same last year, double only in Queen's and lost in R1. But went to final in Eastbourne (which he enters also this year). And if not bcos of that lousy draw getting Lopez in R1 and broken rips due to whopping cough, it's possible he could have done better in Wimbledon last year. Maybe he thinks last year was working so he's doing the same schedule this year? The only issue is that this year with his ranking plummeting, he still has a last chance to get into seeding position if he has entered Queen's for single. It's sad that he now has no chance. So maybe that's a bit of miscalculation here.

Re: 2014, Grass Season in UK

Someone posted a picture of Gilles on twitter practicing and his knee is taped up, I hope it's nothing serious.

Re: 2014, Grass Season in UK

According to Nieminen's blog, his service was off during the doubles.

"We lost the doubles 6-4, 6-4 but at least I was serving great. We held all my service games really easy, we took one break but we struggled to hold Gilles' serve, losing it three times."

Re: 2014, Grass Season in UK

Apparently the knee is ok , according to someone's twitter he practiced without it on Friday before leaving to Eastbourne. He plays a Q on R1, then Benny/Lu on R2. QF projected opponent would be Dolgo. Not a very good draw really, because Benny and Lu play great on grass ( that if he gets past his R1 match vs a qualifier) and then Dolgo is a nightmare matchup. Plus, Gilles 1st singles grass tournament this year, so low expectations for me. Anyway, he might surprise us, Allez Gillou

His section:

(6) Simon vs Qualifier
Bennetau vs Lu
Querrey vs (WC) Edmund
Bye vs (2) Dolgopolov

Re: 2014, Grass Season in UK

Solid serving, impossible to know about anything else because quite frankly Guccione is not very good other than his serve. That said, it was good to see him win a tiebreak against a big server and play well mentally.

2014, Grass Season in UK

It was a great serving performance, must be one of his greatest ones because not very often he makes 15 Aces in 2 sets even if Guccione is a very bad returner. It was also great to see him relaxed on important points, definitely a positive win IMO. He has a tough R2 in prospect, but if he serves like this he will have a lot of chances. BTW, he's also playing doubles, w/Kas, they play Cuevas/Marrero on R1.

I love watching Gilles on grass and fast courts. Much better for his style in my opinion. If only he gets it together this year *fingers crossed*

Me too, his movement and returning looked very suspicious today.

Same here. It looked like he wanted to finish the match as quick as possible.

If he isn't, terrible, terrible performance.

Definite injury/tank, hopefully just as a precautionary measure. I've rarely seen him so disinterested in a match.
