Darn. Not a very good draw for him. All big servers or people he struggles with or both.

Awful draw . As you said, all big servers or people he struggles with. Hopefully he can make the third round and then take it from there.

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

Well this year is just starting out disastrously. Gilles just rolled his ankle in his match with Gasquet. No idea now what the level of injury or damage is. Could be a simple sprain or there could be more significant damage. He retired from the match and was supported by two guys limping on one leg off of the court. He looked like he was in a lot of pain both physically as well as emotionally thinking about what this might mean for the AO and his chances competing in it now just two days away. It's not looking good. He definitely won't be 100% now if he can even play at all. My heart has just sank.

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

Gilles just rolled his left ankle and forfeited the match vs Richie immediately.

It doesn't look very bad -- he didn't fall over or completely turned the ankle -- but still worrisome. 2-3 days rest should be fine.

It's a pity he's been playing well so far despite being down 1 set.

Updated (Or it looks more serious than I thought):

@SI_BTBaseline
Simon had to be carried off the court in Kooyong. On net approach landed on the outside of right ankle when he split-stepped.

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

Guys, I'm so sorry - I just watched this injury. I really hope it's not as serious as it looks and Gilles will be ok for next week. At least two of the French Davis Cup physio's are there on site so he should get good treatment/ advice very quickly. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

Well Gilles obviously hasn't had luck on his side so far this year. Fingers crossed he's comfortable to play in time for the 1st round.

it looks like a serious injury, unfortunately. an article posted by DBR on the Gasquet forum said that Gilles is getting x-rayed to see that he hasn't broken his fifth metatarsal and that he's currently on crutches. let's hope it's not a fracture.

So unlucky for Gilles . This the 3rd GS in a row in which he either doesn't play or play half-injured, obviously luck isn't on his side. That's sad bcoz he ha done a lot of physical training in Halle and he seemed to be tuning great his game before the AO.

Oh goodness. Damnit. He can't get a break from those injuries, can he?

Sucks if he has to withdraw from AO, but also sucks if he plays with an injury.

UGHHHH

@BenRothenberg
Robert as LL seems likely, as Gilles Simon can't walk today after his ankle injury in Kooyong. Walking a prerequisite for tennis. #AusOpen

L'Equipe says that he will be absent for 4-6 weeks http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/Actuali...forfait/430990

Aw Gilles . I was hoping for a good beggining of the season with his work in Halle, but I guess injuries will be always with him, no matter what he does. Please recover as soon as you can Gillou

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

Yep, it's now official. He's out and it's looking like he could be out of action anywhere from four to six weeks according to the announcement. Damn! I feared that would be the case after he sat down and put his head in his towel. In that moment it pretty much dawned on him and us that were watching that care that there went the AO right there. Damn! Not too many of them left for him either. At least that timeframe seems to indicate that there was no breaks to any of his bones in his ankle so that's a positive at least. But still, this just sucks.

That whooping cough thing ruined his last Wimby and took him out of USO, now another injury and he's out of AO. Don't know what to say, that's so unlucky. so sad for Gilles.

Re: 2014, Season Down Under

I'm so gutted right now... I saw him roll his ankle and didn't think it was too serious. Looks like he can get injured doing basically anything nowadays.

Here's to hoping going out of the top 20 will motivate him more. Honestly when was the last tournament he played 100%? Metz?
