I don't know. From what I saw it's really in his head. There could be a good victory which brings him back on track.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

He's completely useless atm, no confidence at all at what he does and bad footwork so misses a lot.
He would have won this match in straight sets on clay 2 or 3 years ago.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

Sigh, the sad fact is, it's only going to get harder for him as his ranking continues to fall. Now, instead of lower ranked guys in the first few rounds, which he still can't even beat right now, it will be your Federers and Ferrers etc. If he doesn't find his mojo soon, it may be a case of "I'm ready to spend time with my kids and enjoy my life and stop struggling to find something that has left me." Sad but possible truth. That's why I really hope for a big moment for him again whether it be a 250 title from an easy draw he manages to get through or a big top 10 win to jolt him back on track.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

He said in a post match interview that, while it didn't show today, he's playing way better.

Now, it may just be denial

I hope he bounces back. I really enjoy watching him play when he's "on."

That's what I'm worried about at this stage.
Depressing, because I really believe he has some big wins yet to come,
but I can see him just giving up if this don't improve soon.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

Volandri in R1 of Rome, then Nadal after that... can't catch a break can he? And I'm not even sure he'll beat Filo.

Volandri the Italian in Italian Open on his favorite surface, ummmm, I'm not optimistic. Anyway, allez Gilles.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

62 63 over Volandri today for Gilles , he didn't play too good, too many routine UE's but Volandri looked quite bad, close to retirement actually. Anyway, it's great to see Gilles getting a straight sets win for once and 45 points in the process plus getting a big match vs Nadal. With this form we can't expect anything but a beating, but Gillou loves big matches. Allez Gillou

It wasn't pretty but a wins a win and I'll take it nonetheless. Next round I just pray he doesn't get bageled or breadsticked.

Re: 2014, European Clay Season

I'm glad he's playing Nadal, he's the type of player Gilles can get into rallies with to see where his game is at. Even if he gets blown out, he'll get the opportunity to see his strengths and weaknesses right now. If he was playing someone like Federer, he could get blown off the court like he did in Rome last year without being able to gauge how he's playing.
