Does anyone know him ?
I saw him play in Marseille last week, and even if he lost (but it was vs J.Johansson) I thought he played quite good. So, if you have information about this player...

Re: Gilles Simon

Aaah, some of our regular posters are back, you should "take attendance" more often, Scott.

CENTRALITO start 11:00am
ATP - [7] M Gicquel (FRA) vs T Ascione (FRA)
Not Before 12:00 PM
ATP - [5] G Simon (FRA) vs F Cipolla (ITA)
Cipolla played a very tough three setter against Edouard Roger Vasselin (ERV), so Gilles should take advantage of that, I hope.

_______

Here's the translation of something funny Gilles said in Estoril :

Have you run into Roger Federer who's playing Estoril for the first time??

GS: Yeah, it was kinda funny seeing him in the lockers room. I was feeling like telling him "What the hell are you doing here?" I saw him with Jose Higueras. He's got RG in mind, that's for sure, he's wanting to give himself all the chances to win, training on clay very early.

He's not in your part of the draw...

GS: He's not, I don't how I do this, but he's never in my part of the draw, or too far.. I actually have to reach the final to play him (Gilles has never played Federer on th tour)

Re: Gilles Simon

a little bit more..

What's your program?

I want to play A LOT, at least 5 tournaments before RG. They are actually mandatory, apparently. I don't know if I'll play Munich, but I want to take a week to rest just before RG

Is there a tournament you like better among the ones to come?

Hamburg ! The courts are "heavier", I feel like I can handle my opponent more easily. I like faster courts as well, like in Monte Carlo or Rome, but in Hamburg, I feel like it will be very difficult to put distance between me and the ball. The slower, the better.

Quel est votre programme ?

Re: Gilles Simon

I hope there's nothing seriously wrong, but I agree it was strange to retire when the opponent is serving for the match. Gilles

Re: Gilles Simon

lequipe.fr is useless, as usual, "grosse contre-performance de Simon", blablabla. :ras:
We want to know why he retired, idiots.
I am used to that, but the smilie is :worship: ;)

Re: Gilles Simon

I hope it isn't anything serious.

Dang. I was drooling over the thought of him possibly playing Roger.

Thanks for the translation tedlesurfeur and the
great pic Truc.
You're very welcome.

Don' t tell me !! Is it a French thing ?? We don't SUPPORT our players, we DISS them every time they lose. Instead of cheering and staying aside, we just call them losers.

ps: actually, I should have said "they", because I do don't that sh*t

------------

What happened with Poussin, then, anybody knows ?

Re: Gilles Simon

"Back injury" according to the website.
http://www.estorilopen.net/1/en/news/newsarticle_931.asp
It would explain today's "performance" on serve - but gosh, it must have been one hell of a backache to force him to retire before Cipolla's last service game. ^^

I hope it's nothing serious and he was just being overcautious, the clay season is so short, he can't afford to miss a couple of weeks.

Re: Gilles Simon

Actually I was paraphrasing Truc. ;)

And I think the last game was going to be Gilles' service game? So it would make more sense that way.

In any case, I'm of the opinion that if it's only four points, you can just serve underhanded and let them get the win the right way.

Re: Gilles Simon

He should have retired in Indian Wells with blisters that hampered his movement and Youzhny exploited it endlessly. He was able to finish that even though he had no chance to win. The picture of him grimmacing looked painful and I hope he is able to recover before Monte Carlo

Re: Gilles Simon

As for the Gilles-Gasquet feud, when I interviewed Gilles I had a question about Gasquet. Obviously it was in a much lighter tone than any of the questions you guys would ask, but I read his face throughout the interview, I noticed no disdain for Richard or anyone for that matter.

Gilles to me is a very calm and relaxed guy, I dont think he has an issue with anyone unless they make it an issue with him. He may get upset at an action or incident, but this guy isnt going to lose sleep over Gasquet's or anyones actual or perceived acts.

Re: Gilles Simon

It actually happened before the last game, so it doesn’t explain his poor serving and overall performance. It just wasn't his day yesterday, I guess...

Here’s the explanation in L’Equipe. I’m relieved it’s not a major injury, but he could have hung on there for one more returning game, frankly, not Gilles’ finest hour:
"It happened on a simple movement. All of a sudden, I couldn’t lean forward at all anymore. The physio told me there was a little chance it would get better after a few games, but at 5-3, it wasn’t really an option! It was a crappy match anyway, I was playing very poorly. My only regret is that it happened just when he was starting to choke a little bit."
About the wasted opportunity: "You don’t often get the chance to make a semi-final without having to play a guy in the top 100. It’s frustrating because I know that small tournaments like this one are doable for me. I had enough time to get ready for the clay season, that’s the good thing when you play badly during the US tournaments."
His participation in Monte-Carlo is not in question: "The doctor told me that it should be OK with 1-2 days rest and relaxing medicines."

Re: Gilles Simon

Maybe I skimmed these too quickly, I was under the impression some that there is animosity between the two players. I dont know about Gasquet, but I highly doubt Gilles will waste any thought on any percieved slight that is out of his hands. You look at Gilles and his girl, you can see why he wouldnt be concerned with anything trivial.

Does anyone know if he will be going to the LA event? Also my friend is reporting from Monte Carlo and I am going to try and get her to interview Gilles. Any questions you have send me a message as I dont check here regularly

Re: Gilles Simon

"animosity" is too strong for what I meant, James. Richard always says in interviews he gets along well with everybody anyway. I just have the impression they're not as close / as much friends as with some others of that generation, but I might be completely wrong. Your friend should ask him who are his best friends on tour - watch him answer Gasquet then.

I'd have many questions to ask him! Also the explanation of the "Poussin" nickname - I thought he was called that way because he was so small when he was younger, but I'm not sure anymore. I'll send you a few questions per PM in case your friend gets a chance to see him.
