Does anyone know him ?
I saw him play in Marseille last week, and even if he lost (but it was vs J.Johansson) I thought he played quite good. So, if you have information about this player...

Re: Gilles Simon

He likes hardcourts, look at his ITF profile, he used to say it's his favourite surface:
http://www.itftennis.com/mens/players/player.asp?player=30023245
But last year he admitted in interviews clay probably has become his best surface.

It was just a stupid draw... I was more disappointed about the Youzhny loss, he also sounded so gutted after that match.
yes I read it in his profile but I think he has to improve his power shots (exspecially the first shot after serve ) to become competitive on hard court. Now I think his best surfaces are red clay and grass

Re: Gilles Simon

I know he says that now in interviews, but he also mentioned hardcourt in old interviews. He said he likes all surfaces back in 2005-2006. He won his first Challengers on hardcourt, had his first good run in a Slam on that surface too, etc.
I think his main problem with clay was that it is physically so demanding.

Edit: Here's an interview from last year during Roland-Garros:
http://video.eurosport.fr/tennis/roland-garros/2007/video_vid41236.shtml
He says he can play very well on clay, but his problem sometimes is the recuperation. The advantage for him is that he knows what he needs to do in order to play well on clay, while it's not always so obvious on other surfaces.

Re: Gilles Simon

Just a few lines in L'Equipe, Tulasne sounds fine with his performance yesterday despite the loss:

SIMON, TOUT N’EST PAS NOIR. – Malgré une crâne résistance, Gilles Simon n’a pas réussi à se sortir du piège tendu par le Croate Ancic (6-2, 6-7, 6-3). Le n° 4 français n’avait, hier, « pas grand-chose à se reprocher », selon son entraîneur, Thierry Tulasne. « C’était bon de voir Gilles se bagarrer comme ça (revenir d’un set et un break de retard dans la deuxième manche). »
(Tulasne says he has not much to reproach himself with and it's good to see Gilles fight like that.)

Re: Gilles Simon

It is all Davydenko's fault! If he hadn't pulled a MAJOR choke job against Lalo in Dubai, Gilles would have been seeded in IW and he would probably have been in Miami too and we would see him on TV instead of following his matches on the stupid scoreboard and and and... :p

Seriously, not being seeded sucked, he should have secured his seeding in Zagreb where the field was so weak (although, I remember now he was in Ancic's quarter too, so...)

Re: Gilles Simon

Apart from the Haase one, they're not really that shocking on paper, but it has been very average indeed, I'm really hoping he can step up during the clay season.
The Djokovic match doesn't count, so it's been way too long since he pulled off a really good win somewhere (I can't even remember the last "upset", was it Davydenko last summer?)

Re: Gilles Simon

Yes, we were a bit worried before the match too, but it was way too one-sided - one hour, Gilles hardly stood a chance to break during the whole match, if I remember well... That's why it belongs into the "poor losses" for me.

But he has cut down the "really shocking losses", I'm aware of that.

Re: Gilles Simon

Anyone else looking forward to Estoril?
Moi! I can't wait for Estoril, Miami bores me. :p
We'll have a special correspondent in Estoril, Ayane said she's going. But only during the 2nd part of the tournament, apparently, so he better deliver. I have high expectations, the field is looking really weak.

I tend to join everything with the name "Gilles Simon" on it, but I have no idea what the Fantasy Tennis League is?

Re: Gilles Simon

Anyone can join and you pick 8 singles players and one doubles team per week. The only catch is you cannot pick the same player more than 5 events so obviously you dont want to waste Nadal on Queens after the French. The $ the players earn each event is your points, so you want to pick players with a chance to do well. There will soon be French Country leagues and you can still form other sub-groups too

Re: Gilles Simon

Thanks for the link of the interview, I'll post it in the few Simon places I know!
I think Ayane will just go there as a fan, but I'm not sure.

As for the Roland-Garros TV show, they said last year that there were now too many players eager to make an appearance in the show, so his chances to do it again are not very high, I'm afraid. It's the turn of your other guy this year, Richard hasn't done it yet!

(The link you gave for that Fantasy thing says "CroTeam", btw, is that the right team? I don't want to register for some Croatian Sub-league.)

Re: Gilles Simon

Nice to see you're still around, joyk, I haven't read you for ages!

His striptease was an absolute highlight for me (he made it to the top 3, only beaten by Nadal and Djoko, Gilles Simon has never gotten so much recognition!)
It's a bit tongue-in-cheek, I love it. I still watch it from time to time when I'm on Youtube. ^^
