Re: 2013 Summer US Hardcourt Season, Allez!

Gilles is still in the draw so maybe he's going to give it a go. Hopefully he's healthy and ready to go.

Re: 2013 Summer US Hardcourt Season, Allez!

Well, since he has to go to DC to fulfil his commitment to the tourney to avoid that zero-pointer, he may as well just try to see if he can play. I think the first match is winnable, although admittedly he's probably rusty and not 100% fit and everything, so it's probably winnable but very very hard to win. But anyway, I'm happy to just see him on court, it feels like a year since he last played .

Gilles' scheduled to play tomorrow not before 5:30pm. Washington's stream seems hasn't start yet.

Are you at that tournament, Mike? Hopefully so, then you can tell us how he looks.

I'm there, hopefully he's healthy enough to play well.

Not good so far. He's hitting the ball ok but can't serve well or move great either so it's not looking good.

Double break down , at least he got a bit of match practice, hope it's better next week.

I expected that much.
Well, at least he is well enough to take the court. Hopefully he'll get up to speed next week.

Re: 2013 Summer US Hardcourt Season, Allez!

So the small bit of good news is that he seemed to be hitting his forehand well and hit a fair number of winners off that side. The bad news is his backhand was off, the serve speed wasn't there again and to me it looked like he wasn't moving nearly as well as he usually does. Plus, he seemed to be moving his right shoulder a lot like something was slightly bothering him.

He didn't seem to be in horrible spirits though, he never got that angry and was signing a bunch of autographs after the match. I think he sort of looked at this match as practice for the masters events.

Tursunov can be good on these courts but it's a bad loss for him especially the score.
He should withdraw from Montreal and only play when he feels ready to go.
I disagree on all counts. I think he came because he really wants to get back on the court and play and this is part of how he gets back to feeling ready to go. He doesn't like to practice as much as play himself back into form and this is part of the process. He already said he hadn't even picked up a racket since his 1st round loss at Wimbledon a few weeks ago so this is part of the slow build up back into form.

I'm just glad he felt well enough to play and didn't have to retire or lose 0 and 1 or something. Tursunov is an aggressive offensive-minded player and when he's in his better form, he's no cake walk. A rusty Gilles losing to a more in form match ready Tursunov isn't a big deal in my book. Again, the victory here is in the fact that Gilles is back on tour and ready to play himself back into form. It'll take some time to get his groove and confidence back in his game.

I completely agree. At the start, I thought we might see Gilles retire from the match, so I'm happy he played through and got some much needed time on court. It's good to see him competing again. Fingers crossed he can build up his game back to his consistent best (we haven't seen that in a while.)

I was there too, though I moved to watch the Haas match scheduled at the same time. I thought Gilles looked out of sorts during the warm up but I was hoping he could play his way into the match. Hope he's ok.

I'm just now catching up with your posts about the whooping cough. That explains a lot. He also looked thinner than ever, but I could be wrong about that since he always looks thin!

Re: 2013 Summer US Hardcourt Season, Allez!

Gilles is always a slow starter, especially after a long layoff. He hasn't been playing for 5 weeks, and in fact, he said that much that he hasn't been able to do anything physically for the 3-4 weeks after Wimby. I fully expected him to be rusty and he was. I'm glad that he played in Washington, because if his first match after a long layoff is Montreal, I can be sure that he'll bomb out on that one. So I rather he just try it in a smaller tournament and get the rust out. Hopefully, he got a feel of the ball in the last match to slowly get back to the groove.
