Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

Gilles will be 23rd next week, which makes him 17 on the entry list to Monte Carlo, just missed out for seeding . Oh well. I hope he makes it to 16 by RG, hard but doable.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

He's done really really well to keep the upwards momentum going, hope this neck thing isn't a recurring problem though!
I really like the way you've put his ranking after each tournie, good to keep track of it like that!

I love that too, it's a great thread. And I'm proud of Gilles, let's hope his neck won't bother him anymore and he can go up even more, allez!

Lala, at what round does Gilles need to get in Casablanca to gain points?

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

His lowest optional pts is 90, so he needs to get to Final to gain pts in Casablanca.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

I've just been trying to swat up on the rankings system, it still confuses me. Even though they got rid of it, the race is pretty interesting Gilles is 17th, not bad http://tennislive.free.fr/race

edit: the top frenchman

Gilles Simon
Dimitrov • Mahut • Paire • Hewitt • Raonic • Berdych • Gulbis • Murray

Thanks for the memories... Andy Roddick.

Nole is absolutely killing it this year.

Le Poussin! Faithfully ignoring the haters since 1995.

Le Poulailler de Poussin! (Simontarded.)

Ron Paul for President 2012!

I actually only know how to calculate the committed player. Like I was looking at Golubev's ranking pts and can't understand why they don't count more than 4 ATP500 events for him since he's not a committed player either. Oh well, I hope I don't need to bother to do that calculation for Gilles, as long as Gilles performed like a top 30 and gets pts on bigger events, then I don't have to bother.

He is actually off pace compares to his 2009 results. He has 810 pts by end of Mia that year. Granted, he was top 8 and had easier draws then so it's understandable that the path is more difficult this year. Just hope he gets to 16 by RG, if not, to be seeded 17-24 in a slam is still not bad, at least no top 8 until R16.

BTW, I'm glad you guys like this thread, I for sure have fun updating it every tournament.

__________
P.S. few days later, figured out that the max number of ATP500 to be counted is 4 for everyone (committed or not), hence...mystery solved.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

I don't even know what committed player means, so let alone I know how to calculate the rank.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

Here's the rule to explain the "committed":

In 2011, any player who finished in the 2010 year-end Top 30 will be required to compete in four Grand Slam tournaments and eight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. In addition, the Best 4 ATP World Tour 500 and Best 2 other events (ATP World Tour 250 and Challengers) will be counted towards a player's ranking. All direct acceptance players at the time of the entry deadline who do not play will receive a 0-pointer in their ranking.

So Top 30 are committed by ATP to play certain tournaments and got penalized if they don't.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

Thanks, I think I get it now. And what happens to this rule when they are injured? I mean, it's not fair to penalize them if they are not able to play for good reasons...

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

They got 0 point for the slams and ATP1000 no matter what if they don't play for whatever reason. As for ATP500, if they are injured for more than 30 days (or show up for promotions even if you can't play), then they don't get penalized.

It must be me, but how's that a penalty?
If you don't play, you don't earn points imo, doesn't really matter if you're top 30 or not. Or am I being too logical here?
I thought they'd get an extra penalty for not playing those tournaments.

Re: 2011 Schedule & Ranking

Top 30 are required to play at least 4 ATP500 level each year. So if like Murray who didn't show up at Dubai, and with no apparent injury (except his wounded psyche), he got a zero-pointer for Dubai, that will stick for 1 year. So if he played another 4 ATP500 and won them all 4 at 500 pts per pop, they will count 3X500 + 0 instead of 4X500. So that's where the penalty hurts. So, the penalty, only occurs at the ATP 500 levels. There was supposed to be extra penalty too, like if you miss a ATP 1000, then they don't let you play another ATP 1000, or sth like that (not 100% sure about this rule), but it was never implemented, cos it makes no sense anyway to make players sit out for mandatory event.

The ranking system, is very complicated, which kinda makes it interesting. But I mostly just read the ranking thread to understand how things work, and the FAQ on ATP website. I think the likes of Julio and other experts read the rule book, I admire their dedications.

Ah I get it now. Thanks for explaining.
I should really dive into the rules after my exams are over, now I'm interested to find out more.
