Thanks for the news, are you in Adelaide? Or did you have TV coverage?
No, I'm in Melbourne. They covered it on Fox Sports.
Gilles lost to Tomic today. The first set was a nightmare. 6-0. It was pretty much unforced errors left, right and center. But it didn't look like he was taking it too seriously. Maybe that's why. But the commentators were really annoying. They kept praising Tomic for being able to smash a top 15 guy and one of them (I think it was Wally Masur) was like "Gilles is not puting in the hard work. He's not even breaking a sweat." and something along the line of how these top 20 players shouldn't think that they can play lightly against upcoming young players like Tomic. So I muted the TV.
In the first game of the second set, Gilles got annoyed by the bad line calls. There were a lot of shots that looked like clean winners but were called out. And the chair umpire was just going along with the linesmen. So Gilles did this underarm serve trying to mock the umpire and the linesmen. And he didn't even chase it when Tomic hit the ball back. So he got broken eventually. But I think the fustration was good for him because he started attacking more and he broke back straight away. It went on to a tie-break which Gilles won 7-4. And Gilles lost 10-6 in the super tiebreak.
Henri Leconte came in and sat at Gilles's player seat for pretty much the whole match. So every changeover, Gilles talked talked talked and he smiled a lot.
And at some point in the tie break, Tomic's serve was called fault. But Gilles said it was in and gave him the point.
Oh! And they showed this really short interview before the match where they asked Gilles a couple of questions. They asked if he could be a car, what would it be? And he said Aston Martin. And they asked if he could bring three people, dead or living, to dinner, who would they be? And he thought about it for a while and he said "My wife."
And his friends. There were some other questions but I can't remember them for some reason. So sorry! But as you know Gilles, he pretty much answered "Yes" or "No" to all of them. He didn't play in the doubles match. Henri played with Bahrami instead. And he was MIA in the award ceremony too. Everyone else was there. I wonder why.
I'm sorry if I went on and on.
