Re: 2009 Clay season

He says that unlike most players, he hits more winners on clay than on hardcourt because it's easier for him to settle down his game on clay. He finds it easier to play offensive tennis on clay, it's tougher to do on hardcourt against fast servers who immediately drive him back behind the baseline.
He likes the club of Monte-Carlo because he used to play there when he was young with Benjamin Balleret. It's a special tournament for him since it's so close to Nice, it's the only time of the year with Marseille his family comes to see him play.

Re: 2009 Clay season

He says again in L'Equipe he needs more time than other players to adjust to clay (that's probably the reason why he always does so poorly in Monte-Carlo). He's been training on clay for one week and still hasn't quite got his bearings, he sounds very cautious. So he's far from dreaming of RG yet, all the more since he has never made it past the 2nd round there.
His wish for this season? "To be more powerful than the other years - tough goal..."

It's strange Margarera didn't see him in training since it sounds like he needs to spend more time than the others on the practice courts, on the contrary. Beck has already won 3 matches, I hope Gilles won't be too much out of practice.
Beck says he was playing very well against Devilder, not so great in his 2 other matches.

Re: 2009 Clay season

One of the journalists of "Carrément Tennis" also said last time his lack of power is going to be punishing on clay, he really was very categorical (in a negative way) about Gilles' chances on clay. And it's funny how all the people who don't follow Gilles so closely assume clay is not a good surface for him, even Labamba who really knows his tennis said so in GM last time.
I can see their point, but if Gilles does as well as Kolya on clay, I'll be delighted.
(And if people don't expect anything from him on clay, that's perfect.)

He's in the stands watching Gaël.
