Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

Obviously we're all disappointed about the loss (as we should be), but I was very satisfied with Gilles performance on a whole. This was his breakthrough run in a grand slam and the match against Nadal had many positives for Gilles to take on board. It would have been nice for him to have taken a set, but I believe he's asserting himself as a real threat in these big tournaments so personally, I'm very proud. I just hope he can continue in this fashion, because he really belongs where he is, if not even higher.

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

The glitter on Nadal's shorts is so annoying.

I'm glad he got quite a lot of applause at the end, but it wasn't a great match at all from him imo, poor serving, very shaky FH... He can play much better than that.

I hope so too.

It's okay if Roddick, Verdasco or Federer wins it.. just not Nadal.

As you know, I could not watch, but looked at the stats: I feel it was the UEs which cost him.

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

Both of them can play better than that but there were some good winners! I quite enjoyed the match (but not the result) I'm watching it again now...

to everyone whos , there are a lot of positives to take from Gillou's run in this year's AO, I think that he just forgot he was meant to be more agressive in todays match.

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

I'd say it was a streaky match. It was quite enjoyable to watch though, Gilles produced some good tennis in patches. In the middle of the third set Gilles showed us how he should have played the entire match; positively. Nadal was also below his best and almost looked relieved to get through the match. But like I said, he'll learn from this and it was a great run!

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

I was pleased with the way Gilles played at times today. It took him a long time to get going but when he got going there were some good shots and he had Nadal in trouble. I think ultimately it was his lack of experience in Grand Slams and the fact it was his first quarter final that got him because he was tight and nervous on the big points at times. Let's hope he moves forward from this and uses it as a motivation to have a fantastic year

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

The match never got really intense, Gilles' game was plagued with too many UE; couldn't really give his all although there were some glimpses of his best tennis here and there. I felt he kinda retreated to his secured game on the important points, more trying not to lose instead of trying to win and that's proved fatal. Nadal wasn't at his best either, all the more reason to be disappointed.

haha. And as of right, the board is down again. sorry if this happens to be a double post.

Le Poussin! Faithfully ignoring the haters since 1995.

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

I had to go out and came back to see that he lost. How sad, still it is a loss that he can build on for the rest of the year. I feel with AO it's less of a tennis contest and more an iron man endurance test given the conditions.
It has all gone down hill for me since Saturday and Richie's loss, then Jo and Gilles in the same day. Noooooooooooooooooooo!

Re: 2009 Australian season thread & Livescoring

He doesn't sound too disappointed in his audio interview, says a good match was not enough, he needs to play a perfect match against Rafa.
Rafa was just much stronger today, Gilles never made him doubt.
He had some fatal lapses of concentration at the beginning of each set, while Rafa always keeps the same intensity on every point.
And Rafa played the big points much better. He compares with the semi-final at the TMC and says that the top players somehow always seem to play shots which land on the line on big points. He had complained after the semi in Shanghai that Nole had been lucky, but it's not just luck if they do it all the time, it was the same again today when Rafa had to save a BP.
His attacking game was working well today, so he probably was a little too wait-and-see in key moments, should have dared more.

The journalist says Rafa didn't look happy when Gilles challenged the last shot. Gilles answers that Rafa told him on the contrary that he was not sure at all either the ball was wide. It was more in jest anyway since it was 40-0 and not even close in the end.

He's very laudatory about Rafa, as usual, he's a model for him, etc.

Gilles really wasn't in Shanghai, that's why I'm glad he mentions that match against Nole again and his reaction at the time.
I have no problem with him not being gracious after a defeat, I prefer him to be honest, no need to be phoney if he's pissed off. But I like he's able to admit months later that his reaction was wrong.
