Re: Week 33: Bronx, New York, USA [Qualifying Draw]
This is a neat tournament. It's in a public park in the middle of a working class neighborhood in the Bronx. It's also free (except for the final day, which is I believe $10.00).
A New Yorker can just hop on the subway, walk into the park, and catch some great tennis! One of the best deals in the NYC sporting world (along with the U.S. Open qualifying tournament).
And you can see some great up and coming talent. Prior tournament winners include Daniela Hantuchova, Mardy Fish and Ivo Karlovic.
Not exactly the most luxurious accommodations for the players. But for fans it's great!
"I lost a qualifying singles and first round doubles match in a challengers tournament in Italy in 1998, and I had to pay for everything from the plane flight to the laundry to the meals. So they tell me when I finish that I won $44. I'm like, 'Can I have that now?' And they said, 'Oh no, we'll send you the check.' "
