ITF announces 2008 Fed Cup dates and provisional Davis Cup dates
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced today that a 2008 schedule for Fed Cup by BNP Paribas has been agreed with the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. This schedule includes a new date for Fed Cup by BNP Paribas in the week following the Australian Open.
Dates for Fed Cup in 2008 are:
First Round - Week commencing 28 January
Semifinal and Play-off Round - Week commencing 21 April
Final - Week commencing 8 September
At the same time, the ITF has been in constructive negotiations with the ATP regarding dates for Davis Cup by BNP Paribas for the Olympic year, 2008, and for 2009 and beyond to coincide with the launch of the ATP’s ‘Brave Real World’ initiative. During these negotiations and for the future, the ITF has taken into consideration the views of the top players with regard to scheduling of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and has offered options in the third and fourth weeks of the competition to address those issues.
Provisional dates for Davis Cup in 2008 are:
First Round - Week commencing 4 February
Quarterfinal Round - Week commencing 7 April
Semifinal and Play-off Round - Weeks commencing 8 & 15 September
Final Round - Week commencing 24 November OR 1 December
ITF Executive Vice President Juan Margets said: “The tennis calendar is even more complex in a year that includes the Olympics but the ITF feels that both tours have been flexible in their approach to both the Olympic Tennis Event and to Fed Cup and Davis Cup scheduling in 2008. The summer of 2008 presents many challenges for all of us but we feel that this is an acceptable calendar for this complicated year.”
ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: “Our thanks to Larry Scott and the board of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour for their willingness to cooperate with the ITF to achieve a workable calendar for both the Olympics and Fed Cup by BNP Paribas in 2008.
“We have also had very positive discussions with the ATP about the scheduling of Davis Cup, both in 2008 and for the future, but those negotiations are not as yet finalised. Even though the 2008 calendar was not part of the long-range discussions with the ATP, the ITF has tried to address the wishes of the players by holding the important semifinal and play-off round over two weeks, with many ties being played in the players’ preferred week immediately following the US Open, working around both the nations competing in the Fed Cup Final and ATP tournaments scheduled in nations who are competing in the September ties. We are also looking carefully at scheduling the Final immediately following the Tennis Masters Cup in 2008 in order to shorten the calendar in a very difficult Olympic year.”
The Olympic Tennis Event will be played on 10-17 August 2008 in Beijing.
Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest, annual international team competition in sport with 131 nations entered in 2007.
