Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall

HENMAN AND IVANISEVIC IN WIMBLEDON RE-MATCH AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL 9th September 2004
Tim Henman will finally get the chance for revenge against Goran Ivanisevic after it was announced that he will face the Croatian in a special match for the benefit of Henman’s charity ‘Kids at Heart’ at The Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday 30th November, 2004, during the evening session. Henman and Ivanisevic have not played each other since their epic 2001 Wimbledon semi-final, which the Briton led by two sets to one in a rain-affected match. Ivanisevic fought back to win in five dramatic sets and then went on to lift his first and only Grand Slam title. They were meant to meet at the same time and place last year, but a shoulder injury prevented Ivanisevic from playing. The Croatian has since retired from the professional tennis circuit, but already outlined plans to compete on the Delta Tour of Champions, which culminates in The Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, in 2005. In the meantime, he will attempt to repeat his famous victory over the British Number One. Henman has other ideas. “I have been waiting a long time for a chance to get my own back at Goran!” said Henman. “I can’t think of a better place to do so than at the Royal Albert Hall in London, particularly as it will benefit a cause that means so much to me.” The match will be played over the best of three sets, with the deciding set taking the form of a Champions’ Tie-break, as used on the ATP Delta Tour of Champions. The winner of the Champions’ Tie-Break is the first player to reach 10 points and lead by a margin of two. The Masters Tennis brings together many of the greatest players ever to play tennis. This year, for the first time, players are required to qualify for the right to compete for a brand new $100,000 winner-takes-all prize. Points are accumulated from the events on the ATP Delta Tour of Champions. The top ten players in the Stanford Financial Champions Tour Rankings, after all other tournaments are complete, will qualify for The Masters Tennis. Two wild cards will make up a 12-man field. Former French Open champion Thomas Muster currently heads the rankings, having won the event in Rome in May, and reached the final in Graz last month. John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Jim Courier and Pat Cash are among the champions who are hoping to qualify. The event was upgraded at the end of last year from The Honda Challenge to The Masters of the Delta Tour of Champions and now includes an extra day of action and four additional singles players. The best seats are going quickly and hospitality sales are at unprecedented levels. Tickets can be booked from the box office by telephone: +44 (0)20 7589 8212, or online at www.themasterstennis.com. Prices start at £25.00 (or £7.50 for restricted view seating). All media accreditation requests should be sent to The Masters Tennis Media Manager, David Law: david@lawsports.net

Re: Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall

Tim was set to play Edberg in 2002, but Tim withdrew with shoulder injury.. So Edberg played Bjorkman. Then in 2003, Tim was going to play Goran: who withdrew, so Rainer filled in. Maybe this year it can work as scheduled?
I bought my tickets early, and already they have changed the date once so it's been necessary to issue brand new tickets and/or refunds!
I do love to go here though, because the winter months are so boring with little tennis..

Re: Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall

Henman was due to play Goran Ivanisevic on Tuesday in an exhibition at the Masters Tennis, but surprise, surprise for the 3rd year in a row a player has withdrawn (Goran's 2nd time: pr*ck!) and Henman will now play none other than Swedish player Joachim Johansson.
I will try to get some photos, and am looking for the article now!

The two have never before played, so should be an interesting encounter.

Re: Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/4045339.stm :

Ivanisevic to miss Henman clash

Goran Ivanisevic has been forced to pull out of his showdown with Tim Henman at the Royal Albert Hall.
The Croatian has a hamstring injury that rules him out of Tuesday's scheduled showdown with the British number one.

Ivanisevic, who also missed last year's event through injury, will be replaced by US Open champion and world number 12 Joachim Johansson of Sweden.

Henman's exhibiton match takes place alongside The Masters Tennis.

The match will benefit Henman's charity Kids at Heart.

John McEnroe, Mikael Pernfors, Jim Courier, Richard Krajicek, Pat Cash, Michael Stich, Mats Wilander, Boris Becker, Thomas Muster, Sergi Bruguera, Guy Forget and Emilio Sanchez line up in The Masters.

The players will compete for a winner-take-all prize of US$100,000.

Re: Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall

The Official Website is yet to release an article on the Henman-Ivanisevic topic, but this is also interesting:

BBC BOOST COVERAGE OF ROYAL ALBERT HALL EXTRAVAGANZA 21st October 2004
Two days after Mats Wilander, winner of seven Grand Slam titles, became the fifth champion to qualify for The Masters Tennis presented by Cunard, the event was given an additional boost by the BBC. The host broadcaster, BBC television, has added an extra slot to its coverage of the ever-popular tournament that takes place at the Royal Albert Hall between the 30th November and 5th December. It means that the semi-finals of the ATP Delta Tour of Champions finale, which sees superstars like John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Jim Courier vying for a winner-take-all prize of $100,000, will be shown. The new broadcast will go out between 4.50pm and 6pm on Saturday 4th December. This will be on top of live coverage on Friday, Saturday afternoon Grandstand and Sunday, a sign of the BBC’s increasing commitment to this, the flagship event of the ATP Delta Tour of Champions. It reflects the increased stature of an event that began in 1997 and has grown year-on-year ever since. For the first time, in 2004, players are required to qualify for the tournament, which boasts a bigger field of champions than ever before and an extra day of action. Former World No.1’s Boris Becker, Jim Courier and Thomas Muster have already qualified. The field will total 12 with the addition of two wild-card invitations. As well as the competitive action, a world-class field of players will figure in doubles entertainment. In previous years, Ilie Nastase, Peter Fleming and John Lloyd have all taken part. The opening evening session of the event on the 30th November will also see a re-match between Britain’s Tim Henman and Goran Ivanisevic to aid the charity Kids at Heart. Henman and Ivanisevic have not played each other since their memorable Wimbledon semifinal three years ago. Tickets can be booked from the box office by telephone: +44 (0)20 7589 8212, or online at www.themasterstennis.com. Prices start at £25.00 (or £7.50 for restricted view seating).
