Bangalore will replace Mumbai as an ATP Tour tournament this September, the ATP announced today. Held in the Indian city of Mumbai for the previous two years, the new Bangalore event will be played in the week commencing September 29, after the ATP board approved a request to move the tournament week and venue.
"We’ve enjoyed having the tournament in Mumbai the last two years and we would really like to thank the people of Mumbai for their great support of the event," said Mahesh Bhupathi, ATP player and Managing Director of Globosport. "When the tournament moved from Ho Chi Minh to Mumbai we had the aim of growing tennis further on the sub-continent and we are happy with the success that we have achieved here in Mumbai. Moving the tournament to Bangalore will give men’s tennis another opportunity to spread its wings in India and I am very much looking forward to playing in my home city."
Bangalore, located in the South of India, is no stranger to ATP events, having hosted the ATP World Doubles Championships in 2000. The new outdoor tournament, to be played at the 7,000 seat KSLTA Signature Kingfisher Tennis Stadium in Cubbon Park, will see some of the best ATP players fighting to become the inaugural singles and doubles champions of the Bangalore Open.
Tournament owners, Shanghai Ba-Shi Industrial Group, are also the promoters of Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, the season-ending championships of the ATP.
