Re: Wild Cards

Jenkins, Delic among 8 US Open men's wild cards
8/14/2008 3:05:00 PM

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -Scoville Jenkins, who lost to Roger Federer in the first round at Flushing Meadows last year, and former NCAA champion Amer Delic were among eight men receiving wild-card entries Thursday into the U.S. Open.

The USTA also invited Americans Brendan Evans, Austin Krajicek, Jesse Levine and Sam Warburg, along with Carsten Ball of Australia and Laurent Recouderc of France.

The 21-year-old Jenkins is ranked a career-high 195th. He won three matches to reach the main draw of the French Open this year. He made it to the U.S. Open last year through qualifying, then lost to eventual champion Federer 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Delic was the college singles champion at Illinois in 2003 and is now ranked No. 128. He qualified for this year's Australian Open and made it to the second round.

Levine is ranked No. 106 and reached the second round of the Australian Open in January. Warburg, a four-time All-American at Stanford, is ranked No. 147 and also made it to the second round in Australia.

Yeah, but it's an absolute joke that Devvarman didn't get one. I don't care if he's from fucking Jupiter. And the USTA claims to be supportive of college tennis. Oh well, guess Sommie will just have to keep earning his way through. Assuming they at least granted him one into qualies...

Re: Wild Cards

Well, they didn't give a qualies wild card to Sommie.

"Players receiving US Open qualifying wild cards are: Jean Yves Aubone (20, Miami), Ricardas Berankis (18, Lithuania), Chase Buchanan (17, Columbus, OH), Alex Clayton (20, Bradenton, Fla.), Ryan Harrison (16, New Braunfels, Tex.), Travis Helgeson (22, Overland Park, Kan.), Bryan Koniecko (21, Syosset, N.Y.), Michael McClune (18, Irvine, Calif.) and Tim Smyczek (20, Hales Corners, Wis.)."

Re: Wild Cards

Hmm. Well, his ranking at the cut off date was 345, so maybe the assumption is that this gets him into the qualie draw as an alternate. Not sure how far down the rankings the US Open qualie draw typically goes. If not, completely inexcusable by USTA.

The other issue is whether he accepts an SE into New Haven if he beats Kunitsyn tonight. Then he could have a conflict if he fares well in New Haven.

Re: Wild Cards

Yes, the New Haven point is there. Forgot about it completely.

But a player who's a favourite to qualify for a Slam would normally choose Slam ahead of ATP. Somdev may be an exception, of course!

He can get $17,500 (more, I think as that was last year) if he reaches the main draw and loses first round. That will fund quite a few weeks in South America or Europe where he can play on his beloved clay.

Gits.
Aubone, Berankis, Buchanan, Harrison, Helgeson, McClune and Smyczek are good and obvious choices. Clayton I know very little of; Koniecko the same.

True, especially seeing as they gave one to Austin Krajicek who has not done anything impressive

Re: Wild Cards

Austin earned it, though, so you can't deny him one. He won in Kalamazoo and the field contained many highly rated Juniors like Harrison, Buchanan, Rhyne Williams etc.

Anyway, Austin is a very good prospect for the Americans. He is not ranked that high because he joined college earlier this year (he reached the doubles semifinal in the Championships even though he was one of the youngest players there). If he played Futures all year long, he'd surely be top 600 by now.

Distant relative of Richard Krajicek, by the way.

They do support college tennis: Aubone, Krajicek, Helgeson, Clayton, and Koniecko are all/have been top college players (not to mention Delic and Warburg, although they're obviously ranked much higher). I love Sommie, but the USTA exists to support American tennis, and although I would've liked to have seen Sommie get one I can't blame them for favoring American players. I'd say that all of their qualy choices (and MD draw) are deserving of their spots.

Re: Wild Cards

Very true and all the college players who have been given wild cards definitely deserve them, but Sommie is the two time champ, so maybe they should have given him one into qualies. After all, you improve by playing better players and Somdev did the college players who plan to go pro a lot of good by staying for an extra year.

Especially since Thacher seems to have withdrawn and that freed up a spot. Or is there a binding contract to bump up the guy who lost in the semifinals to the eventual winner?

Why isn't Taylor Dent there? Not injured again, I hope?

Re: Wild Cards

Very happy with all the wild card choices, but I have to chuckle when I think about the form Jenkins and Evans displayed today. Both in New Haven qualies, Brendan lost a third set tiebreak to Phillip Bester who's 802 in the world.
Scoville won a very long and tight first round match and then got destroyed by Phil Simmonds, who's 748 in the world. (he was very likely incredibly tired, hopefully that's all that loss was)
(Good win for Simmonds though and it would be great if he could qualify )
Hope both of the guys get it together for next week, after all there aren't many guys ranked lower than the 800s in the main draw of the open

I'm excited to see how all these guys perform in the main draw and qualies.
