Tennis Tipping #40 - Newport - Congrats to Netin! and SeagullUK/Gulzhan

Tennis Tipping #40 – Newport Rhode Island

What is Tennis Tipping?

In the game, participants pick the winners of all main draw matches and are placed in a knock-out system. That means each participant plays a different participant and whoever predicted the winner of most matches correctly, moves on to the next round. The same applies for doubles, but you're in a team format and your scores are combined.

Note:

- In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will decide who moves on to the next round.
New tie-break method: 2007 TT TB Method

- In case a player (i.e. the actual ATP Player) retires in a match, this match will be counted as long as one point has been played. If players are replaced by a lucky loser after the start of Tennis Tipping, these matches will be cancelled.

How to Sign-Up:

Just post here that you would like to play. You can only play one tournament per week. Entries will be based on ranking. Everyone can commit.

Please read this post for more information
Tennis Tipping 2009 Rules Thread (out of date - use 2013 Rules)

How to send in picks:

Picks can be sent in as soon as the draws are ready. Remember, you pick a winner in every match! Picks should be sent by PM, so that your opponent does not know your picks. Picks should be titled: [TT: Newport, day #]. Picks can be sent in anytime until the beginning of play each day. If you're still in both singles & doubles, you use the same tips for both. For doubles, you still tip the ATP singles matches, not the doubles! No changes can be made after the play has started.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE

If the board goes down as has happened before, send your picks to dc1zkotw@hotmail.com

Saturday's Statistics

Vincent Spadea 1:5 Fabrice Santoro - SR2
Prakash Amritraj 0:6 Frank Dancevic - SR3

Friday's Awards

The ‘Rafael Nadal: king of the grass court’ award for player of the day goes to: LaTenista, with 4/4 for the round, when the majority scored less than 2, as she carried her team to the final

The ‘Boris Pashanski: hopeless grass court clown’ award for the worst player of the day goes to: Tiptopdaisy and Tepasaf, neither of whom scored a single correct pick

The ‘Daniel Nestor and Nemad Zimonjic’ award for best doubles team goes to: LaTenista/Sploush, who scored 6/8 to move into the final

The ‘Bryan Brothers’ award for worst doubles team goes to: DeathlessMortal/Tiptopdaisy who had a woeful 1/8, ending any hopes of reaching the final, and making sure they couldn’t do a lot in the singles event either.

The ‘Alex Bogdanovic’ award for best pick of the day goes to: the 6 players who picked Fabrice Santoro, when the favourites finally started to win some matches

The ‘Kristian Pless’ award for the muppet pick of the day award goes to: the Peya-pickers, because of his choke against Spadea

The ‘Nathalie Dechy’ award for the unluckiest defeat goes to: No-one… 4 comprehensive scorelines, so no-one could be deemed unlucky

The ‘David Nalbandian’ award for the biggest disappointment goes to: Tiptopdaisy… 2 semi finals, but fails to hit a single correct pick in them, living to his Austrian nationality

The Managers Choice award goes to: SeagullUK for congratulating me on tanking my first round doubles match

Friday's Statistics

Alexander Peya 3:7 Vincent Spadea - SR1 PTS1
Ivan Navarro 4:6 Fabrice Santoro - SR2

Thursday's Awards

The ‘Rafael Nadal: king of the grass court’ award for player of the day goes to: LaTenista, for 5/9 from the QF matches, and then getting both the semi final matches correct, they only person to do so

The ‘Boris Pashanski: hopeless grass court clown’ award for the worst player of the day goes to: MZverev-Fan, who scored just 1/9, although handicapped by missing the first day of play

The ‘Daniel Nestor and Nemad Zimonjic’ award for best doubles team goes to: LaTenista/Sploush, for scoring 2/4 from the semi final matches, after all 4 winning teams scored 8/18 to win their matches

The ‘Bryan Brothers’ award for worst doubles team goes to: Drikke/MZverev-Fan, scoring just 4/18 and limping woefully out of the tournament

The ‘Alex Bogdanovic’ award for best pick of the day goes to: Tepasaf, for Ivan Navarro, Smasher, for Vincent Spadea, and LaTenista, for Prakash Amritraj, on a day where most people picked the favourites and lost

The ‘Kristian Pless’ award for the muppet pick of the day award goes to: Everyone who picked Fish and Levine… so everyone (very boring Cagon TT here…)

The ‘Nathalie Dechy’ award for the unluckiest defeat goes to: Allez-Alejo, for losing on SR’s, when he would have won on SR’s with the rules from last season

The ‘David Nalbandian’ award for the biggest disappointment goes to: GlennMirnyi, for not tanking as spectacularly as he could have, and then for not threatening to spam anyone’s home page after losing

The Managers Choice award goes to: DeathlessMortal and Tiptopdaisy, for commenting their way into the semi finals, only to find it went horribly wrong when they got there and found themselves with a difficult task to turn the match around

Thursday's Statistics

Alexander Peya 10:8 Donald Young - SR1 PTS1
Aisam Ul-Haq Quereshi 2:16 Fabrice Santoro - SR2
Kevin Anderson 17:1 Ivan Navarro - SR3

Wedbesday's Statistics

Ivan Navarro 4:13 Rik de Voest - SR5
Igor Kunitsyn 17:0 Mikhail Ledovskikh - SR6
Brendan Evans 0:17 Frank Dancevic - SR7
Mardy Fish 17:0 Rohan Bopanna - SR8
Prakash Amritraj 0:17 Jesse Levine - SR9

Tuesday's Awards

The ‘Rafael Nadal: king of the grass court’ award for player of the day goes to: TommyB and Aussie fan, who along with a selection of other scored 4/5, but did have 5/5 until the Isner/Levine scoreline was reversed

The ‘Boris Pashanski: hopeless grass court clown’ award for the worst player of the day goes to: Gaynor, who scored 1 point, and had no correct SR’s, just beating his doubles partner Forever-Delayed, who had 1 correct SR

The ‘Daniel Nestor and Nemad Zimonjic’ award for best doubles team goes to: Tepasaf and Aussie fan, who get the award despite scoring the same as Drikke/MZverev-Fan, because Tepasaf had 2 late picks (and they were still the best team)

The ‘Bryan Brothers’ award for worst doubles team goes to: Gaynor/Forever-Delayed, who scored 5/22 across the 2 rounds

The ‘Alex Bogdanovic’ award for best pick of the day goes to: Snowwy, Aussie fan, Felo, TommyB and Bavaria100 who all picked Quereshi

The ‘Kristian Pless’ award for the muppet pick of the day award goes to: everyone who picked Isner, but was a few points away from being a unanimous award for everyone picking Dancevic

The ‘Nathalie Dechy’ award for the unluckiest defeat goes to: PigpenStinks, Felo and Sly, who had won their matches until it was found that the scoreboard for Isner/Levine was the wrong way round – honourable mention goes to Netin/Bavaria100, who lost their doubles match with 13/22, when some teams won with 8/22

The ‘David Nalbandian’ award for the biggest disappointment goes to: The ATP scoreboard for not getting the score the right way round – award not given to Gaynor/Forever-Delayed because yesterday it was revealed they planned to tank the match, and did so successfully

The Managers Choice award goes to: everyone who ed Levine yesterday, then went onto praise him when they realized there was a mistake

The ‘Boris Pashanski: hopeless grass court clown’ award for the worst player of the day goes to: Sploush, PigpenStinks, Eurofighter, Machiavelli, LaTenista, Gulzhan, JMG, Sly, SnooFoo and Forever-Delayed for a horrific 1/6

Re: Tennis Tipping #40 - Newport - Clay sucks.... come and play on the grass

TT Commentary

Friday's Commentary

The Quarter Finals were completed and the semi finals began, but there was still no change in the low quality of the TT at the Newport tournament, with once again everyone struggling to find their form on the non-bouncing grass courts.

The day began with Drikke making sure that he knew the rules before he went out and played his QF match, and his long session of swotting up worked perfectly as he beat Snowwy to reach the semi finals on the tiebreak, using the very rules that he spent all day learning, proving that doing the research will pay off in the end.

In the semi finals he will face Tiptopdaisy who finally ended the run of Aussie fan, who for the first time put in a poor performance, although some may say that he was distracted by the continual cheering of the Austrian number 1 for his man to win, combined with the teamwork he was showing with DeathlessMortal, who also won.

And DeathlessMortal ended the American’s hopes on winning the title when he beat Allez-Alejo, leading to him subjecting the TT tour to a rant about how he would have won the match under last years rules, and complained about how he was always being screwed over by the new system, and he was going to take this protest to the highcourt to try and get the result overturned, just because he doesn’t like the rules (just like GB’s number 1 100m runner…)

And Netin completed the SF line-up as he beat 3rd seed TommyB to confirm his spot as favourite to win the event, as he continued his quiet and unassuming progress through the draw.

In the doubles, MZverev-Fan’s no show yesterday proved costly as it meant that he and Drikke had no chance to catch up Tepasaf and Aussie fan, while Seagull/Gulzhan and DeathlessMortal/Tiptopdaisy edged out their opponents with effective performances to reach the semi finals, SeagullUK and Gulzhan benefiting from the fact the manager allowed them to win in the first round by deciding to concentrate on managing the tournament rather than playing it.

And LaTenista and Sploush completed the semi final line-up, ensuring that there is at least some home interest left in the competition as they beat 2nd seeds Smasher and GlennMirnyi, who were subdued and being out of the singles events. But perhaps the biggest disappointment was the lack of abuse given by GlennMirnyi to the players on his way to defeat, showing just how Mickey Mouse the tournament has become.

And the semi finals began, and it looks like we have our finalists determined with all 4 matches looking rather 1 sided after the first day’s play.

Drikke leads Tiptopdaisy and Netin leads DeathlessMortal, despite the doubles partners wish to face each other in the final, and their insistence that their plan of attack was going to work, giving them a tough job to try and turn the match around in the second day.

While the doubles event gives then an even harder task after a perfect performance by LaTenista put her and Sploush on the verge of victory, only stopped by the decision to not complete the matches on the day by the organizing committee.

While in the other semi final, SeagullUK and Gulzhan have a slight lead, but given they had no opponents it wasn’t a surprise, as Tepasaf and Aussie fan were caught out by the late change of decision to play the beginning of the semi finals.

Join us again tomorrow for the conclusion of the semi finals and a preview of the final

Thursday's Commentary

The TT QF’s began today, but where unable to be completed due to the freak weather conditions; our tournament manager was so surprised at the lack of rain it sent him into shock, causing play to be abandoned for the day.

So instead, today we will see the completion of the QF’s, and as a very late and bizarre addition to the schedule, the first half of the semi finals will be played as well… not the whole match, but just a set so we can sell 2 tickets to 1 match (completes the tournament really, after the Isner/Levine debacle, and now there’s a QF between 2 players who I saw play each other in challenger qualifying 6 weeks ago)

So what actually did happen before play was suspended?

The 4 singles matches were very evenly matched, with no-one running away with the win, although DeathlessMortal and Netin! had very slight leads going into the second day’s play, while Aussie fan vs. Tiptopdaisy and Drikke vs. Snowwy had only just begun and where nowhere near a conclusion, on a day where practically everyone played it very safe, creating some exceptionally boring tennis for the fans to have to sit and watch.

Although there was dispute between DeathlessMortal and Allez-Alejo, with the American accusing him opponent of hating Americans in an attempt to rile him up and add some heat to their match, only for DeathlessMortal to calmly respond to the accusations by saying that Allez-Alejo has got the wrong Croatian, destroying the American’s mind-games for today, but we’re sure he’s got something else planned for tomorrow

But the real interest today came in the doubles competition, which produced the more interesting tennis; not for what was happening on the courts, and that was low level stuff again, but because of some of the gossip surrounding the TT circuit.

2nd seeds GlennMirnyi and Smasher are behind against LaTenista and Sploush, but given GlennMirnyi admitted that he didn’t really have the motivation to play the tournament anymore, it’s not a surprise. It will be interesting to see whether he manages to find the effort to try and turn the QF around, or whether he completely tanks tomorrow in an effort to fly to Indianapolis for his next tournament.

After a stunning first round, Drikke/MZverev-Fan had a problem today; that being MZverev-Fan not showing up to play the doubles match, too distraught after watching Zverev lose to Bolelli in Stuttgart, and then cheat his way past Ross Hutchins in the doubles, leaving Drikke with a seriously disadvantage, and he was only kept in the match by the suspension of play.

Another reason for his potential no show could be the controversial new doubles rules suggested by Tepasaf, and with him so appalled and what was being suggested, he refused to take to the court as a protest.

Join us again tomorrow when the Quarter finals are completed, and the semi finals get underway at the Newport Rhode Island Futures event, as we find out what the organizers will do next to try and throw the schedule apart and make it impossible for every to find out what is going on at this tournament.

Wednesday's Commentary

The Quarter Final line ups are set, and there are so unfamiliar names in them, with only 2 seeds making the singles QF’s, and 2 seeds in the doubles QF’s, meaning that the tournament could have a 3rd surprise winner in successive years.

The biggest surprise was the exit of top seed Qczi, beaten by Drikke who has been on holiday this week in Newport, and only at the last moment decided that he wanted to play the event, realizing that there isn’t a lot to do in Rhode Island. And what a decision it turned out to be as he beat Qczi in a thrilling match to make a QF’s.

And then he went and backed it up in doubles, as he and MZverev-Fan, let into the tournament after the 11th hour beat the top seeds in that as well, beating Netin and Bavaria100 to complete a miserable tournament for the Wimbledon champion.

And GlennMirnyi’s exit was another surprise, losing to Tiptopdaisy, despite putting in a decent performance. Obviously he was still struggling to adapt to the real grass of Newport Rhode Island, and his out and out moonball game was unsuccessful here, and rumour has it he spent the whole of his preparation time spamming the homepage of Australian wonderkid Joseph Sirianni, who apparently cost him the match.

But 2 seeds did make the QF’s, with TommyB putting in another very solid performance to beat VamosIsrael, and will now face the 6th seed Netin, who beat Felo in a remarkable match.

Netin had come off court believing that he had been beaten, as throughout the match the scoreboard was saying that he was behind, only to find out afterwards that the scoreboard was wrong for the whole match and he had in fact won the match.

But this was not an isolated incident, with DeathlessMortal and Aussie Fan also experiencing a similar experience in their matches, leading to some very harsh words from the players involved, and seriously allegations of that someone in the tournament committee was making a lot of money out of fixing the matches, especially when tournament manager Forever-Delayed showed up in a brand new suit, and then played his match in it, before saying it was typical of the American nation not to know the difference between two things; using right and wrong as an example.

But the good news for America was that Allez-Alejo did make the QF’s, when his opponent Sexyboy didn’t show up for his match, apparently off showing his moves in the local nightclub, trying to prove to the ladies that he can back up his name.

The doubles draw though so allegations of match fixing placed at it when Forever-Delayed and Gaynor produced a performance so bad that they can only have been tanking the match, confirmed before the match even began by Forever-Delayed. Their opponents SeagullUK and Gulzhan weren’t any better, but knew they were never going to lose and so just messed around of the court.

In other news, BolarBolari and JMG were beaten by LaTenista and Sploush when Bolar was too focused on the Tour de France unfolded badly around him and his bets to concentrate on his doubles match (damn you Schumacher for riding the best TT of your life and stopping Miller taking yellow, especially with the allegations drug taking you’re your past…)

Tepasaf and Aussie fan beat SnooFoo and Machiavelli, but had such a commanding lead coming into the match that Tepasaf couldn’t even be bothered to show up on time and let Aussie fan play the opening few games, safe in the knowledge that they couldn’t be challenged, as they went on to claim a commanding victory and were team of the round.

Join us again tomorrow to report on how the QF’s went down, whether the scoreboard will be correct today and an insight scoop on which of the matches is going to be fixed.

Tuesday's Commentary

The first day of the Newport Rhode Island TT event was one to forget for most players, with the majority of them putting in a dismal performance, and with the quality of some matches being so bad, the ATP will be investigating some of the players alleged match fixing, including 1 match where it looked as if both players were trying to lose.

But the main story of the draw is the defeat of Wimbledon champion Bavaria100, who lost a very tough and competitive opener against top seed Qczi. Bavaria100 actually served for the match, but choked when doing so, and then blamed her defeat on the tendency of Germans to choke, claiming she was just doing what is expected of her country (why couldn’t they have choked in several penalty shoot-outs over the last few years instead?) Qczi moves into the second round, while Bavaria100 can go back to celebrating her Wimbledon title.

And plenty of other big names crashed out, including second seed Forever-Delayed, the 2006 champion, who once again did not enjoy a successful week on the grass. After losing to Sexyboy, he claimed that he was distracted by his role of having to manage the tournament this week, and said he only came here to Rhode Island to meet the cast of Family Guy, only to find out they were cartoon characters rather than real people. He is still involved in the doubles, but expect him to tank the match, just like he did in the singles today.

No worries for the 3rd seed TommyB, 6th seed Netin! and 5th seed GlennMirnyi, who all made the second round, but GlennMirnyi had to overcome lucky loser Eurofighter, after the defending champion MissPovaFan pulled out at the last minute, apparently because he wasn’t happy with the amount of money he was being given for playing here, and then acting like the diva his name suggests, just walked out the tournament.

The day was just as good for the Americans, with 2 of them making it through to the second round, with Allez-Alejo winning a competitive battle with qualifier Exponente, and PigpenStinks beating Sploush in a high-drama, low quality contest which went on late into the night, with PipgenStinks eventually coming through in a third set tiebreak.

LaTenista fell to VamosIsrael though, not putting in one of her better performances, while SnooFoo was edged out by Sly in what a terrible, terrible match, with neither player showing any interest in winning the match; the kind of actions that disgrace the whole of the TT tour. Sly won, but will have to improve if he’s not to be kicked out of the tournament for attempted (and failed) match fixing.

Aussie fan was the star of the day though, crushing the infamous Kostas Kastoria, and putting in one of the few professional performances of the day against the young Greek hope, who showed up on court seconds before the match begun, and did so with his usual amount of respect to the authorities, before Aussie fan put in a stunning performance, making just 1 error and will now face PigpenStinks.

And one of the highlights of the day came from DeathlessMortal, who wasn’t happy with the order of play that was released at the end of the day, thinking it should have been better, only for the manager to respond by not officially declaring him a winner long after the end of play, even though he had beaten 8th seed JMG easily.

Join us again tomorrow for the conclusion of the second round of the singles, as well as the beginning of the doubles competition, which actually started unbeknown to the organisers yesterday, with Tepasaf and Aussie fan producing the best performance against SnooFoo and Machiavelli and have almost won the match already, while the top seeds Netin/Bavaria100 are in trouble against Drikke/MZverev-Fan.

And as always, we’ll provide you with the latest rumours from the TT tour, but with yesterday being a quite day, there is very little to report

Monday’s Commentary

After a year of players grinding away at much lesser tournaments, the main event of the Tennis Tipping calendar returns as the Hall of Fame Championships at Newport Rhode Island takes place this week, with one of the greatest fields assembled for an event (and the TT field isn’t too bad either)

And with this year’s Wimbledon champion Bavaria100 travelling across to take the step up and play on a real grass court rather than the so-called green clay of Wimbledon, how will she cope with the pressure of being the best grass court player in the world (by title), especially as she has been drawn against top seed and world number 5, Qczi, one of two top ten players who will grace the event.

The draw also sees the defending champion, MissPovaFan take on the 5th seed GlennMirnyi in what could be a fascinating encounter. MissPovaFan has changed his name in order to try and gain an advantage on the court, not happy with the success that he had been getting all year, but now is the best time to face GlennMirnyi, still complaining about the death of tennis following Rafael Nadal winning Wimbledon yesterday, and with his mind not on the TT job, this could be a great opportunity for the defending champion to beat GlennMirnyi, on a grass court that still is old-school.

The other top 10 player is former champion Forever-Delayed, but since winning the title in 2006 has struggled to reproduce the form on a grass court, winning just 1 match on grass since then as he was struggled to cope with the pressure of playing in front of the UK crowds. But back in the USA, he will face Sexyboy in round 1, someone that he beat last week in Dublin and so will be looking to make it a double success.

But for American fans looking to see some home grown talent, it’s going to be another disappointing year, with just 4 Americans in the main draw. PipgenStinks, a former finalist here, came through qualifying to join LaTenista, Allez-Alejo, and SnooFoo in the main draw, with SnooFoo already making headlines for HER outcry to the media that she is a women, as apparently a mistake had been made in reporting her gender.... it has been assured that it is a mistake that will not happen again, given that the person who made the accusation hasn’t been seen since...

And the qualifying competition was somewhat of a disappointment to the fans, with only 9 players signing up for qualifying, and then two of them giving walkovers, including MZverev-Fan, who bizarrely showed up to play on Saturday when he wasn’t scheduled for a match, but didn’t make the court on Sunday when he was supposed to be playing... rumours suggest he had a heavy Saturday night and he fell off the Newport bridge.

And the return of the Bye ending in disappointment when he was booted out of the doubles draw at the last moment by the TT Board, a decision that has caused huge offence to the thousands of fans who had bought tickets to see the bye compete, one of them quoted as saying it’s the biggest outrage in TT history since Forever-Delayed was overlooked by the TT Board for the vacant position, and it was given to Troickitard based on her fluttering her eyelashes at Adee-Gee...

Instead, Drikke and MZverev-Fan, winning in Dublin last week, enter the draw as a very late sign-up and will face top seeds Netin and Bavaria100, while in the other stand out tie, ¾ players from the 2006 final will face off in round 1, with JMG and Bolar Bolari, the 2006 champions facing LaTenista and Sploush.

Join us again tomorrow for the report on the opening day's play, along with all the rumours surrounding the TT circuit
