USA vs. Sweden

How about this scenario. A tired Roddick loses to a pumped up Enqvist. A sly Björkman beats a nervous Fish. Tomas Johansson puts in a chock surprise performance à la AO 02 along with a rock-solid Bjösse to beat the Bryans. Hence US-Swe 0-3. Pat the Mac is so stunned he puts up himself and Courier for the reverse singles, thus defaulting. Final score: 0-5.

Americans

COME ON!

Re: USA vs. Sweden

Well, you never know when it comes to Thomas Johansson. He's usually bad or mediocre, then every other year, out of the blue, he wins back to back tournies, a TMS(AMS? Super 9? Why can't they stick with a name?) or even a major.

So, I mean, he can probably pick a great doubles performance from his unpredictable wizard's hat.

Re: USA vs. Sweden

Ummm.... I don't really think that's going to happen. The American guys get pumped up about DC just as much as the Swedes do. It's on Andy's and Mardy's home turf - everyone both of them know will be there. The Bryans are playing great right now...

it'll be a close tie, to be sure, but 0-5? lol I don't see that happening

Re: USA vs. Sweden

Ahh... The pressure is gonna get to them. Families, friends, their high-school mates, the USTA, the media, the general public, everybody expects to them to win. And if, no , when things starts to go wrong the first day, the PRESSURE will make them nervous and force them to mistakes. Sweden will see their raised finger of weakness and grab the whole hand.

Re: USA vs. Sweden

No, everybody expects it to be a tough tie. Every article on it has mentioned the fact that Andy has trouble with two of the more likely singles players and that Mardy hasn't been playing well in his past couple of tourneys.

As for pressure, Andy, Mardy, and the Bryans have all proved in the recent past that they can handle pressure. I'll give you examples if you can't remember on your own

Re: USA vs. Sweden

But this is a new kind of pressure ( ). Now, they, at least Roddick and Fish, are virtually playing in their own backyard. People are counting on them. And if, no , when things go wrong, they'll be more nervous than EVER before.

Re: USA vs. Sweden

uh.... you obviously know nothing about either of them then, and that's all I'll say.

I'm not saying they'll win all their matches, I'm just saying if they lose it won't be due to pressure.

I think they'll rise to occasion instead of break down when facing pressure.

Oh I'm not upset... it just so happens that Andy and Mardy are my current two favorite singles players and the Bryans are my fave doubles team so I'm quite pumped about getting to see them all play in DC (and yay for it being televised!) and I'm defending my faves to your attacks LMFAO

and yes, Jace, that's what I was trying to say

Re: USA vs. Sweden

Honestly, right now I'm hoping that all swedish injuries won't cause Björkman to play all singles and the doubles rubber by himself. Perhaps, Wilander and Nyström can pick up their rackets. Or maybe not.

Question, why do you think Agassi nor Pete ever got excited about DC

Re: USA vs. Sweden

A couple things IMO

-both a little selfish, wanted to win slams, etc. etc. Maybe they saw DC as an inconvenience and just didn't care enough to put their own careers in jeopardy.

-no real team unity.... the team we have now are all very close friends. They truly care about each other, enjoy being with each other, support each other, motivate each other, etc. I have a feeling Andy in particular would not be quite as committed to DC were he not playing with his buddies (in fact, he's said almost as much). And, whether it ends up to be a good decision or a bad one, I think this whole concept is part of the reason PMac went with Mardy over Vince. Agassi and Sampras simply did not have this. Perhaps it was because they had to consistently compete with each other on huge stages, major finals, etc., and it prevented them from being close. I'm not sure, but it seems like a factor to me.
