Davis Cup: Australia VS Belarus

I intend on going to this tie, it's going to be held at Kooyong which is very convienient for me. Tickets go on sale on March 14th (incase anyone didn't know,) but this will be my first Davis Cup match, so I was wondering if anyone knows how much tickets will cost (approximately) for the saturday and sunday (I can't go on the friday, because my stupid maths teacher has already told us we're going to have an assignment that has to be done that day, so I'm very angry) and what the likely squad is going to be for Australia. I can't wait to see Mirnyi again, such a sweet guy

Mirnyi, who the heck cares about him? You're Australian; I assume you will be supporting the Aussies? Well now that Lleyton is back playing Davis Cup again, he'll be playing two singles rubbers, and that leaves either Guccione or Luczak to play the others. At this stage I don’t know who to go with, both did extremely well against Switzerland. I guess their form leading into the tie will decide who plays. I'll be confident with either, but I would probably go with Luczak. And of course the doubles team is set in stone, Arthurs and Hanley are a very good team. I’m pretty confident we’ll win this tie.

on this board being an australian generally means support anyone BUT australia

if it was on grass i would have no hesitation in giving gooch the 2nd singles spot, but now it is played at Kooyong, they have to go for Luczak, firslty because he deserves the right and secondly he is the better player.

btw, arthurs won't be playing this tie given the impending birth of his first child - i have a feeling hewitt will play the dubs as well

I had noticed that about Australians, I don't understand it; but I had noticed it I wish the best for Arthurs, his wife, and soon to be new baby But I hope the change doesn't throw off the Davis Cup Team. They had done well in their Tie

Unlike the singles, Australia has a great depth in doubles. They could use the other guys like Huss and Perry, although I doubt it.

only problem with picking those type of players (those being doubles specialists) is that it makes the team inflexible with respect to a potentially rotating the singles should the need arise on Sunday

Mirnyi is lovely, I saw him at Kooyong when he played Coria and my camera stopped working, and while he was walking out of the arena he heard me shout out 'my camera's not working' so he just stopped, stood there and smiled and I got a lovely photo of him. I'll be supporting Mirnyi, not really Australia (I'm not a big fan of any of our players) and I won't be supporting Belarus either (The only player I know from there is Mirnyi so I'm not really supporting the country) Hewitt is my 2nd least favourite player, but I must admit I'm really excited about seeing him, I want to see those C'mons live and I want to see Australia's tennis hero. I'm confused about when the tickets go on sale. The official davis cup site is saying the 14th, but ticketmaster's site is saying the 7th, so I'm pissed off because I don't want to miss out

Psst... miss some days of school before the tie, and watch them practice (PS I didn't tell you that!)

I echo your comments about Max. He's a class act, kind of serious/quietish for a player, but once he's psyched, he can be dangerous. A lovely guy, with great taste in doubles partners! Who cares about him? People who know tennis outside of Australia and know that he's a decent bloke.

I have classes at this time, I think, and would probably go if I thought Belarus stood much of a chance here. I think Max can do well if they can keep him motivated. Vlad will do ok in the doubles, but is capable of performing in singles (depending on the opponent!). I haven't seen much of Vladimir Voltchkov for a couple of years, but remember watching him and Max play doubs together in Sydney a while back. They were fantastic. So much fun. I hope you have an awesome time, JL

All the best to Max, Vlad, and Peter Luczak.

Re: Davis Cup: Australia VS Belarus

Thanks Kristen. I would take the friday off school, but I have a huge assignment thats already been scheduled for that day (why did it have to be THAT day), the saturday worked out good because my music lessons are held just up the road at 9am, so i'll have half an hour to get to Kooyong and find my seat which means I won't have to take public transport there (i'll catch it back though) so i'm bludy excited

Oh well that's just ridiculous. And I suppose half of that is because of Hewiit? Lleyton is a champion, I'm sick of all the negative things I hear about him, especially when you consider what he has done for Australian Tennis. Can you imagine what Australia's Davis Cup team would have been like over the last 5 or so years without him; it would have been a joke. I just really admire the way he plays, he just never gives up, on the court he’s one of the most committed players. Great to have him back for the next tie!

Re: Davis Cup: Australia VS Belarus

Davai!!
Thank goodness Master Hewitt has returned. Once again, Australia can depend on him. It will be tough, against Belarus. *Finds map and googles "Belarus""Tennis""ATP" for further information*

I am not a patriot in Davis Cup for a number of reasons.
* The fact that I am Australian, does not change the fact that my favourite players are my favourite players for a reason. Granted, I will cheer on Luczak and possibly Kimmich if he ever gets a shot, but I won't stop supporting my guys for a few days, if it's just a few matches of tennis.
* The stupidity and ignorance of commentators is sickening. John Newcombe is my favourite of commentators...although I do wonder what Fred Stolle would do if precious Xavier [Belgium] played against Australia?
* The fans irritate me. Fan(sp)a(s)tics.
* Previously: Todd Woodbridge. Always: Lleyton Hewitt. He oozes something which can be interpreted as ass-holish-ness, or spirit. Probably both.
* I thrive when it comes to supporting the opposition. It's fun, if only to provoke the man next to me, who only follows tennis when its on TV, live from Melbourne Park.

My points are invalid however, as I am not interested in glorifying Master Hewitts heroics and his service to Australian tennis (although neither of these can be denied).

JL - seeing Hewitt play is exciting. The crowd gets going and it does make the match more thrilling. Just need to make sure he is winning, or the crowd may suffer from shock (Nalbandian match, July 2005 ) and fall silent.

Everyone supports the players they want to support and I have no problem with that. But I do think for Davis Cup people can at least get behind their country for that. And as for Lleyton I have heard many negatives about him, but the fact remains he is and has been a winner on the tennis court. I was in fact totally in shock that Blake beat him in LV. I realize Lleyton was injuried a lot last year, plus waiting for the baby to come etc. So maybe he didn't start out this year in the greatest of shape. But I look for him to get back on track

Re: Davis Cup: Australia VS Belarus

They are slashing the prices for this tie in an attempt to get alot of families to go. The only think I don't agree with about the tickets is that you have to buy a series ticket for all three days. What if you can't make it one of the days???

Our fans are brilliant, how about you watch some other Davis Cup matches and then you may realise that we aren't all that bad. Did you watch our tie against Switzerland, and did you notice the behavior of The Fanatics? They were terrific, as well as those of the home country. Every supporter cheered their country, there was no malice.

And so what if our commentators are biased, they are being broadcasted around Australia, so why shouldn’t they support our country?

If you can't make it then you buy the tickets to all 3 days anyway. I probably won't be able to go on the friday, but I've already bought my tickets (it sounds like they're already selling out fast, I wanted section 8 but they were all sold out so i got stuck with section 7 which is still good) This morning I made my mum ring up as soon as the ticket agency opened, we went for a 20 minute drive to get them (I was still asleep, I just put some clothes on and then went to get the tickets) and the stupid person didn't tell me on the phone you needed to be a member to get the tickets, so I was so angry at them, but they refused to give them to me, so I went to find one of those internet booths in the shopping centres, joined up and i went back and i was full on yelling at the woman 'I'M A MEMBER NOW, GIVE ME MY DAMN TICKETS' then she told me i had the wrong password and i was ready to smack her, but she saw me getting really angry so she did it for me anyway. Nice woman.
