AUS v SWE in Adelaide

Adelaide hosts Davis Cup

Australia will host their first-round Davis Cup tie against Sweden next February in Adelaide, Tennis Australia said on Monday. Australia meet Spain in the final of this year's Davis Cup in Melbourne later this month.

It will be the third time Adelaide has hosted a Davis Cup tie, but the decision on the surface will be made after the final against Spain.

Australia thrashed India 5-0 in a World Group qualifier on a hardcourt surface in the South Australian capital last year, while they beat Germany 3-2 on grass in the quarter-finals in 2000.

"Adelaide will give us the flexibility in selecting a surface as well as being able to accommodate a tie that is likely to generate substantial local interest," Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard said in a statement.

Sweden have won the Cup six times in the past 20 years but the Australians have beaten them in their last two meetings, the most recent a 5-0 quarter-final victory in Malmo in April.

The tie will be played the weekend of February 6-8.

The Davis Cup final will be played on grass at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena from November 28-30.

ahh but this time we may have Thomas Johansson and Thomas Enqvist back. lol yes grasping at straws. But, that said, I have watched Soderling's progress closely this year. He's made Philippoussis fight hard to beat him, and I think if he plays his best, again, it'll be tight. Bjorkman and Robin for singles Dammit I want t see Aspelin (or Vinci) as jonas' doubles partner.

And, Magnus did play well against Mark...Joachim should've beaten old f**t (whom I do like, prob my favourite aussie!) Wayne. lol I think Mark will be Sweden's biggest threat., and Robin will be the one the aussies should look out for. Gosh I'm slightly warped...I don't even sound Aussie.
Go Poms in World Cup!

Re: AUS v SWE in Adelaide

Wilander has picked this preliminary team: Björkman, Enqvist, Söderling, J.Johansson, Aspelin.

I hope he picks Aspelin for doubles, so he doesn't do the same mistake as last year. It would be interesting to see a best-buddies match-up Hewitt vs. J.Johansson. Totally contrasting styles.

I wonder if Björkman will be picked for singles as well, he was really disappointing in the AO singles.

No, probably will be Enqvist and Soderling in singles, Wilander seems to like the stereotype swedish style players.

Bjorkman and Pim-pim in doubles, Wilander only brought along Aspelin for show. It still will be very difficult to beat those Aussies.

Yup...spoke to Jonas at the Aussie, and he was the only Swede to give me info! lol... Said Aspelin is the fifth guy I realise the other guys are great in singles, but I dont trust someone with Jonas, like I'd trust simon. No bias here

I'd feel most confident with Soderling/Johansson in Singles (if not Jonas). I think the young guys could do well, but I dunno if they'd keep their wits about them if, say, they were down a couple of sets
Anyway... I'll be cheering on my boys in the yellow and blue

Sad that kim didnt kick ass today..but as she said, she's pleased to have gotten so far with the sore leg. Damn her for making me not hate lleyton! Damn sweet girl! lol...

I don't know if Wilander is willing to take that risk. Robin has never played DC before and Pim-pim only a dead rubber vs. Australia. Then they haven't lost twice in a row to the Oz as the old guys, so why not?

Via, I thought I overheard someone saying that during the AO final actually. Presumptuous fools they are! Sweden and Austria are gonna kick ass! (In my dreams ) Mind you, if the next tie was in Sydney, I wouldnt mind too much

I've heard that if Sweden beats Australia and Austria beats the US, it'll be big pay-back time at home for Sweden for that humiliating away defeat in the relegation match vs. Austria in '99...

Re: AUS v SWE in Adelaide

Söderling will be playing singles, as for the other singles player I am not sure, but I don't think it will be Björkman.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: AUS v SWE in Adelaide

lol George, stop ruining my 3 days of Bjorkman fantasy! I reckon they'd throw him in there in the fifth rubber... possibly! lol and if its dead... cant you imagine... bjorkman vs reid. How dejected would you feel. But, seriously... I can imagine Joachim putting up a good fight against Scud (also being trashed on tv lately, lol!)

Robin is a smart choice :O)

Re: AUS v SWE in Adelaide

Why isnt Tomas Johansson playing?
I thought he was excellent despite losing to Phillipoussis in the 1st round. Mark was on fire and Tomas still could have taken the match with some luck.
Surely he would be a good option with Soderling for singles.

Re: AUS v SWE in Adelaide

Thomas chose to play one of the big challengers n Europe this week/weekend. He wants to improve on his ranking and form (yeah go figure... I agree he did extremely well the other night!) before he takes on DC stuff again.

The little Swedes (lol) give me confidence though. Beating some big names recently... with Robin doing so well last year, and poor Rainer getting his ass kicked over the last two tournies! lol...
