Le Russe Marat Safin est forfait pour le quart de finale de la compétition face à la France, programmé du 15 au 17 juillet sur terre battue intérieure à Moscou. Le numéro 1 de la sélection russe subira, en effet, une opération au genou le 7 juillet.

«Le genou de Marat Safin est actuellement examiné par le professeur Maurilio Marchacci à Bologne, en Italie», explique le communiqué. Et d'ajouter : «Après l'opération, il commencera sa préparation en vue de l'US Open, et il sera contraint de manquer le match de Coupe Davis contre la France».

Safin, N.5 mondial et vainqueur de l'Open d'Australie en début d'année, souffre de ce genou depuis plus de deux mois. Le capitaine de l'équipe de Russie de Coupe Davis, Shamil Tarpishchev, avait sélectionné lundi pour recevoir la France Nikolai Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny et Teimuraz Gabashvili. Il devrait remplacer Safin par Igor Andreev.

Davydenko est cependant douteux. Le N.7 mondial a dû abandonner mardi au premier tour du tournoi de Gstaad à cause d'une blessure au poignet droit.
Cette blessure avait déjà contraint le récent demi-finaliste à Roland-Garros à abandonner au deuxième tour à Wimbledon le 22 juin face au Suédois Jonas Bjorkman.


This article confirms that Safin won't play the DC. He will be operated tomorrow. After his operation he will start his preparation for the US open. The article also says that he should be replaced by Andreev.

No matter who plays in both teams I hope Russia wins! And I also hope that romania wins so that one of the quarterfinals will be between romania and russia...that would be great!!!! Good luck Russia (Marat, hope you get well soon!) and Romania!
