Asia/Oceania Zone Group I : Thailand vs Pakistan

Thailand set off on a mission

Published on March 02, 2005

[TENNIS] The national Davis Cup squad flew out last night on a mission to defeat hosts Pakistan in their zone qualifying tie in Lahore this weekend. Under the charge of non-playing captain Chanachai Srichaphan, the team which has successfully won regional qualification for the past three years is studded with stars:

Paradorn Srichaphan, Danai Udomchoke and twin brothers Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, who won the Challenger title in Cherbourg on Sunday.

Although Thailand, with their higher-ranked players, are expected to win the encounter with the unfancied hosts, a 5-0 winning margin may be out of the team’s reach, according to Chanachai.

“We are the favourites to win the tie, but it won’t be a one-sided victory. Pakistan have chosen to play on grass, which they are more familiar with. Our players don’t play on grass that much,” said Chanachai, who took on the captain’s post despite health problems.

“So we cannot underestimate Pakistan. Besides, they beat us 2-3 in our last meeting on grass, when we were still in Group II. However, our current team is a lot stronger than then. Our chances should be around 60-40 per cent,” added Chanachai, whose heart problem has prevented him from accompanying his son Paradorn on tour since January.

Thailand and Pakistan have met six times and are on three wins apiece. Last year, Thailand played host in their first-round encounter and showed no mercy by claiming all five matches. But the only other time they met on grass – also in Lahore, in 1998 – Pakistan utilised their familiarity with the fast surface to edge home 3-2.

With help from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, the Thai team have had the chance to get more accustomed to grass. They also have several days to prepare at the Lahore Gymkhana venue before Friday’s first singles clashes. “There is nothing to worry about concerning the preparation. Sonchat and Sanchai [who returned from France yesterday] still have enough time to get used to grass,” Chanachai said. The draw for the tie will be tomorrow at 10am, Lahore time. Friday’s and Sunday’s programme starts at 10am, while the Saturday schedule begins at noon.

Aisam defeated Danai on GRASS before. Aisam will take an advantage playing in his home town. It will be tough for Danai.
