Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

Germany: Rainer Schuettler Florian Mayer Alexander Waske Tommy Haas

Slovak Republic: Karol Kucera Dominik Hrbaty Karol Beck Michal Mertinak

Surface: Hard (Indoor)

Played at Bratislava, Slovak Republic

This will be a great match up with 2 great teams. Slovak's main guys are Kucera and Hrbaty, with Schuettler, Mayer, and Haas both great on Germany's side. Match will be played on Hard court indoors. That will probably go in favor of Germany since the Slovak's usually like slower surfaces, especially Hrbaty. Slovak has an advantage of playing at home. I say Germany will win every match except for doubles.

Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas Massu Gael Monfils Marcos Baghdadis

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

Rainer retired.
He is repalced by Philipp Kohlschreiber

That doesnt make it easier for Germany but Haas and Mayer are strong enough to beat Hrbaty and Beck (guess he will play singles instead of Kucera). Schuettler/Kiefer would have been a real good double but as they both arent able to play Haas/Waske will have to face the slovakians. They were able to beat Ram/Erlich so they will also have their chance this time.
Germany should really win this although Mayer is better on clay than on hardcourt.

Go Tommy
Go Flo
Go Alex
Go Philipp

Tommy Haas Florian Mayer Philipp Kohlschreiber Benjamin Becker Rainer Schüttler Alexander Waske Mischa Zverev

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

I'm already excited for Friday. I guess it will be much more difficult for Germany to win with Haas and Mayer in singles. Sure, Kiefer doesn't hold a good Davis Cup career record, but at least he has beaten Hrbaty recently in LA and he played good tennis this summer and belongs to the more experienced players together with Rainer and Tommy.

I hope Mayer can get the job done, Tommy should be okay and fit, I hope.

Best of luck to all Germans : Nicolas Kiefer | Rainer Schüttler | Lars | Florian | Tommy

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

I really question the Slovak decision to put it on hard instead of clay. An indoor hardcourt should favour the Germans more, why do they want to do that?

Although I should say Hrbaty isnt a clay courter, he is good on all surfaces and this year he has had a pretty bad record on clay compared to everything else. But they should still have played on clay.

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

OMG, Experimentee
you would have put Slovakia on clay against Germany?
It's not often the case, but I would say that Germany would have an edge on clay because Slovakia is even worse. Which Slovak player wants to win something on clay for them?
Kucera and Beck proved to be absolutely useless so far and they never did anything good on clay.
Hrbaty would be the one with the best chances, but I don't think he is that good on clay, he reached the final in Casablanca this year, but that's already his best result and I'm not sure how much we can read into that.

IMO it would have been an abolute joke if Slovakia wouldn't consider that Hrbaty already won an indoor title and that Beck/Kucera have a much better game on indoor hard than on clay.

Clay would be worse for Slovakia than indoor hardcourt.

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

We have to wait for the rubbers to be announced. I have never seen Mayer playing indoor. I don't think he is as good as outdoor. Haas also prefers outdoor.

I think this one will go to the distance. 3-2 Germany or 3-2 Slovakia.

Re: Playoffs: Germany vs Slovakia

yes, it's long time ago since Haas played an indoor event.
(the two matches right after his 15 months layoff earlier this year don't count)

But if he is able to continue where he ended during the 2001 indoor season I like Haas' chances

back-to-back wins in Vienna and Madrid TMS

but the question is whether he is already able to play on that level again....

Viel Glück Deutschland, ich hoffe, dass Ihr es schafft!

My German guys are like the cast of the Wizard of Oz:

Rainer = Lion
Kiwi = Scarecrow
Tommy = Tin Man
Flo = Dorothy

...but I still love 'em
