OMG I can't believe my eyes, Philippousis contesting the wildcard playoff!

I saw something on the news this morning about Lleyton Hewitt who said Philippousis should get the WC. Maybe Mark himself realised that no one is going to give him a free ride anymore. At least put in some effort!

So this means that Nick Lindahl and Joe Sirianni will be playing on a wildcard or direct entry? If Nathan Healey has a big week in Burnie he will get a wildcard I pressume. Wayne Arthurs should've entered, won it, and finished his career in Australia just like he was supposed to.

Wildcard field announced for play-off

The direct entrants and first round of wildcards for the Australian Open play-offs have been announced.

Mark Philippoussis (Vic), Robert Smeets (Qld), Alun Jones (ACT), Joseph Sirianni (Vic) and Nick Lindahl (NSW) are the five direct entrants into the men’s draw, while Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS), Monique Adamczak (NSW), Sophie Ferguson (NSW) and Christina Wheeler (Vic) have been directly accepted into the women's draw.

Under selection policy, players ranked inside the world’s top 250 were directly accepted.

In the men’s draw the first round of six wildcards has been decided. Nathan Healey (NSW), Andrew Coelho (Vic), Samuel Groth (Vic) and Carsten Ball (AUS) were awarded wildcards along with 18-year-olds Greg Jones (NSW) and Brydan Klein (WA).

In the women’s draw the first four wildcards have been awarded. Jessica Moore (WA), Karolina Wlodarczak (Vic), Daniella Dominikovic (NSW) and Jelena Dokic (AUS) were all given wildcard places in the draw.

A further five wildcards into the men’s draw and eight into the women’s draw will be announced on December 11. One wildcard place in each of the men’s and women’s draws will go to the singles winners of the 18s Optus Australian Championships, which begin this weekend.

The winners of the Australian Open play-offs, which will take place at Melbourne Park from December 15 to 21, are awarded main draw wildcards into the Australian Open. To be eligible for wildcards into the Australian Open and other Australian Open Series events players must enter the Australian Open wildcard play-off.

Re: Wildcard Playoff: December 15-21, 2007

Seems to me that forcing players like Alun Jones and Smeets to play a match in the middle of December isn't all that good for their preparations for January -- I think in most cases giving some promising players a direct entry into the AO and letting them rest in December would result in much better chances of good performances come January.

Hey I've never been to the playoffs before, but I"m considering going this year. Could someone tell me if it's worth going to please. Is it free entry, and what days are best to go. I'm not a fan of any of the players in the draw, but I think it might be better sitting at the tennis rather than doing something else. Any feedback or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's interesting that the majority of players that enter the event can only do so by wildcard.

At the same time, I think it was a decision that helped the Brisbane and Burnie Challengers get some decent players at least. But I do agree with you.

Age of tennis

Before the tennis season pauses briefly for Christmas, one of the most tantalising events on the 2007 calendar will take place this weekend.

It’s the Australian Open play-off, formerly the Australian Open wildcard play-off and before that, the Aussie Assault.

In just a few days, the cream of Australian tennis – minus those who will get a main draw spot into Australian Open 2008 – will gather at Melbourne Park for this intriguing battle for a Grand Slam wildcard.

The Australian Open play-off pits youth against age and inexperience versus some crafty campaigners with proven Grand Slam credentials. What unites the 16 male and 16 female contestants is their desperation to seal a spot in the AO.

Among them are Jelena Dokic, former world No.4, and 31-year-old Mark Philippoussis, former world No.8 and a finalist at Wimbledon (in 2003) and the US Open (1998).

Joseph Sirianni, 35 in January and now sitting at a career-high 195 in the world singles rankings after winning two Challenger events last month, is considered a dark horse to win the men’s event, but few would discount last year’s play-off winner, Robert Smeets or the experienced Nathan Healey, both with plenty of big-match history.

On the other side of the ledger will be some young guns embarking on professional careers such as Brydan Klein, Greg Jones both 18, as well as 19-year old Nick Lindahl and 17-year-old Jessica Moore.

“The strength of the field is fabulous,” says tournament director, Mark Handley.

“All of the players competing can be considered for a wildcard into any Australian Open Series tournament. The depth in both the men’s and women’s events is going to be great. There’s a good mix of youth and experience in both fields.”

Another element of intrigue is how the entrants will fare on the new blue Plexicushion courts now laid at Melbourne Park.

For Greg Jones, top seed at this week’s Optus Australian 18s championships in Melbourne, the play-off represents a chance to launch his professional career in 2008.

“It’s a massive opportunity,” he says. “I’d love to be in Mark Philippoussis’s [round robin] pool. He’s obviously an amazing player, it would be a great experience to play him.”

Open to the public

The great news for tennis fans living in Melbourne, or those visiting the city is that the Australian Open play-off is free for spectators. The tournament begins on Saturday 15 December with three days of round-robin action starting at 10 am.

Players are divided into four pools of four. Two players from each group will advance to the knockout quarterfinals, starting on Wednesday, 19 December.

Matches will start at 11am and proceed in roughly four timeslots: 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. The featured match of the day will be staged at 5pm to allow tennis fans an opportunity to catch the action after work.

On finals day, Friday 21 December, the first match will start at 3pm and, following an intermission, the second match will take place late afternoon.

So if you’re planning on a bit of pre-Christmas Grand Slam action, what better place to start than the Australian Open play-off, where only the best will proceed directly to the main event, starting 14 January 2008.

Thanks for the info Ville

Ok, since I'm heading into the city for a football match on Sunday evening anyway I think I might head in early and catch some of the day's action

I may even go in next Friday and watch the finals since I finish work early on Fridays
